"When you travel 100 miles for your family pre Christmas weekend getaway and you walk into the pub which is festooned with Christmas decorations, has 4 ales, including a winter warmer on tap, and a roaring fire at one end of the pub, you know you have made the right choice for the family Christmas meal. Having researched the Whitstable area for somewhere to have our Christmas meal I found the Royal Oak on Tripadvisor and having viewed the menu, which included a children’s Christmas menu, I decided to book and was I glad I did. From the moment I contacted the pub to the moment we left after our meal the service was excellent and everything very reasonably priced. What can I say about the food, each and every one of us commented on how good the food was and how plentiful the meals were. Both the children tucked into their dinners and cleared their plates. If you’re looking for somewhere to have a Christmas meal with friends I would highly recommend the Royal Oak. Price per person: £100+ Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5"

We had a fantastic Sunday lunch at this restaurant today. There were 2 vegetarians, 2 adults, and 1 child in our party, and we all thoroughly enjoyed our meals. The children's menu offering 3 courses for £8 was a hit, with a generous portion of vegetables and trimmings. My husband was able to enjoy both the pork and beef dishes without any extra charge. Despite the server being very busy, the service was excellent and they managed to accommodate us even without a reservation. We always have a wonderful time dining here. The vegetarian nut roast was delicious and there was a smaller portion available for our 7-year-old. This restaurant is very family-friendly and we would highly recommend it....

"After never visiting Canterbury before we where looking for somewhere to have a late lunch, we came across this place which looked ok, upon entering the back room we were offered to take a seat in the front area and someone will be with us. We asked what food there was and we where sarcastically shown the food on the blackboard, after choosing what we wanted the polite man went off and put the order in. We did feel that because the man had asked a couple of questions to another member of staff that he was spoke down too a bit. Anyway after placing the order and what we wanted the food came out it wasn’t correct but because it seemed like we were going to interrupt the people in the back room we just took what we had. It was nice food though. When we went to pay we hadn’t noticed that there wasn’t a price list so when we asked for the bill we were told that it was donation, what we thought was enough, it wasn’t posted anywhere and it took us by surprise as we where standing at the till, I was going to pay in cash but was told they don’t take cash so I had to give my donation in card by telling the person how much we where donating. After plucking a figure out of air as we wasn’t prepared we paid and left. Upon leaving we felt that the person we paid thought we hadn’t paid enough and wasn’t happy with the amount but after working out what we would have paid properly we worked out that we had paid more than what it might have been if there was a proper price on everything. Overall it has a great ethos and it’s great for giving people the experience that they need to be in a working environment but they need to show the price or tell customers first that it’s donations and card only."
