"Previously had a lovely lunch at the Steam Packet Inn, Totnes so, after travelling a few hundred miles from Suffolk, thought I 'd have breakfast here. Entered bar area at 9am no other guests/customers around. Checked they were still doing breakfast (the board outside said they were) and whether I could have it outside at the tables on the terrace (view of R Dart). Fairly miserable looking woman said I could have it in the bar area (cosyish but dark and no view) as otherwise places were reserved for their residents, who 'took precedence '. I hadn 't seen anyone anywhere inside or outside on my way in, so I checked what she 'd said was correct in this case, so she went off to 'ask the Manager '. After returning, she took me through to the large indoor restaurant area, overlooking the river, where there was literally no one else! I thanked her and said it was a shame not to sit here if it was empty, but I really wanted to sit at the outside tables (also having zero customers) was this possible. She repeated that this inside area is 'for residents in preference ' but that I could take my menu etc outside if I ordered and collected my food from inside the bar there would be no waiting service outside, which is only the other side of the restaurant glass wall. Whilst I can understand all this in high season or at other times when there are myriads of people around, I don 't get it under today 's conditions. Common sense and a desire to welcome and serve have gone awol. I 've been sitting on Vire Island with my take away breakfast (bought from some lovely local cafes well done Curator coffee and Food for Thought), facing the Steam Packet, and there is still a dearth of customers. Their 'computer says no ' attitude and lack of welcome and service will unfortunately make it unlikely I will revisit or recommend it when I move house to just up the road fairly soon. The dearth of customers, at least this potential local/regular one, is on the cards to continue."

I had a delicious vegetarian breakfast at this restaurant. The food was cooked perfectly, of good quality, and reasonably priced. View menu

Lovely place right by the river. Stunning location. Food was OK and drinks however the service was slow and disorientated. Zero communication between staff.

This was a great find for a cost effective weekday break. Contemporary room with high quality furnishings, spotlessly clean, excellent and varied food. Staff work hard to make you very welcome.

We stayed just up the road for a weekend, the Steam Packet Inn ticked all the boxes for food and drink, staff were friendly, the view across the Dart River beautiful lending it's self to the ambience. We will definitely be back View menu

I was extremely frustrated when I visited this restaurant with my extended family. We were overcharged, and a few members of our group had to leave early but had already ordered food, which they said we could have. However, when the food finally arrived at our table an hour later, we were informed that we couldn't have it.

Can’t fault the location and it’s not the inn’s fault it was raining. Food was a bit underwhelming although the fish and chips was good. It did feel that we were an inconvenience and it’s really unclear that the restaurant and bar are not separate and there was confusion about entering the restaurant as didn’t think we should walk right in and were told off for being in the way. Lovely place but the food needs more work. Serving on fancy slate doesn’t make things taste better. Such a shame as all the reviews made it seem worth the visit. Would hazard a guess that a lovely sunny day makes a difference and you forget the food.

"The positive is that the food is good. But the negative is the service time and the attitude of the staff. We were seated and had our order taken after 20 minutes. A little slow but it was a busy Saturday evening so understandable. Starters came promptly and were eaten. We then got ignored by every passing member of staff for at least 50 minutes. Quite the skill! Once there was a break in our conversation and I realised how long it had been, I stood up to intercept a waitress and asked “are our mains on the way, please?” Our ticket was checked by her at the kitchen hatch and we were told “yes”. At this point our starter plates were cleared after they had sat on the table for at least 35 minutes. Our mains then took another 25 minutes to get to us, so I suspect that being told they were on their way was a lie. To be clear: we were given our mains 1hr 20 mins after placing our order. I complained to a waitress who sent over a manager. The manager asked if we’d had starters (yes, we had) and said that it was our fault our main was so late as we’d had a first course. How insulting!!! Blaming the customer for their bad service. Disgusting. When I said it was still far too long to wait between courses she then changed tack and said the kitchen was “really really busy” well, they weren’t busy cooking our food now were they?! And despite the place being full when we arrived, by this point of the night over half the tables were empty. There were 3 tickets on the pass along with ours and tables were 2 4 people (no large groups) so I feel that was also another lie to get out of it. What a shocking way to treat customers! My advice to you is: if you want your food served in a timely manner, either take the advice of the manager and don’t order a starter, or, be sure to communicate with waitstaff once your first course is finished and ask for your main to be cooked and served promptly. (Note: food also sat under the heat lamps for long lengths of time as staff stood socialising with one another behind the bar rather than serve customers) I hope this advice is of use as I would have appreciated it ahead of my visit! Good luck. [Reading other reviews, ours is not the only experience of slow service and seeing staff chat to one another rather than deal with the customers paying their wages.
