"Rude from start to finish. Walked in having booked a table no welcome stood like lemons at the bar before anyone acknowledged us. Were told we had to order food and drink at the bar but when we tried to do so we were told to sit down and they would come and take our order! We waited for 30-45 minutes and still no one had taken our order so asked again at the bar to be told they would come over now again no smile no apology. Having a gluten and dairy free member of family with us who repeatedly had to ask if the meal could be dairy free to be then bought over her meal with coleslaw on which she was told she couldn’t have so had to be taken back. Chips were totally over cooked and inedible, when we complained the waiter came over with some more and banged them down on the table with again no apology. Why so rude? We were perfectly pleasant and polite and expected the same in return. Will not return and being local will definitely not recommend."

We ate here recently and could not fault anything. The food and the service were both excellent. Well presented home cooked food and very tasty. We would not hesitate to eat here again!

Had a super Sunday lunch the staff were welcoming and helpful. We both had brisket of beef which was tasty and tender and it was served with plenty of vegetables. Make sure you know where it is located as we got a bit lost after coming out of The Byes but luckily a nearby resident came to our rescue.

I recently enjoyed one of the best Sunday roasts I have ever had at this restaurant. We were celebrating my wife's 70th birthday with a group of 9 adults and 4 grandchildren, and everyone agreed that the food was fantastic. The staff even went the extra mile to bring out our beautifully lit birthday cake.

This is a great friendly pub serving excellent food. 10 of us had dinner on the 16th September and the food was superb. I called the pub a couple of days before and asked for 3 vegan meals, they were the best Thai vegan curry’s we’ve ever had!! They have a great selection of ales and wines and the staff are friendly and very efficient. Highly recommended. View menu

We were in Sidmouth for the weekend and friends that have a holiday home here recommended the Volley. The food is fantastic and so good that the menu changes weekly. My partner is Gluten intolerant and he was very pleased that there were so many choices. The owner went through the menu with him. We will definitely be back. Staff were all great and the atmosphere was lovely

After relocating from London in August, we discovered this pub conveniently located at the end of our street. We couldn't believe our luck! The food here is exceptional. The menu is constantly changing and showcases inventive dishes. The chef is clearly very skilled. Their Sunday roast is without a doubt the best I've ever had. Since our first visit, we have always been greeted warmly by both the staff and regular customers. This pub has a welcoming and cozy atmosphere, just like you would want from your local watering hole, but even better.

Popped in for a drink with sister and sat at a table that was booked for 45 minutes later. 20 mins before the stated time we were reminded the table was booked at 7, to which we replied ‘yes we know’. 10 mins later another member of staff came and reminded us again because the people that had booked had arrived early. Once again we said ‘yes we know’. Then the barman apologised to them because the table wasn’t free! We then let him know how we felt about his poor customer service, which he defended, and left. Instead of making us feel unwelcome and that we were doing something wrong by finishing our drinks, the people that had booked the table should have just been informed that the table wo... This was our first visit to the Volley in Sidmouth and we visited for a Sunday roast. Well we are so glad we visited! The staff were so friendly and welcoming and we were seated at our table very quickly always advisable to book as it is very popular. My husband had the roast beef and I had the nut roast and we had a side of cauliflower cheese. It was very generous portions and a lovely mixture of Yorkshire pudding, roasters, a lovely selection of vegetables and generous servings of gravy and you can ask for more if you need to. It was so delicious certainly the best roast dinner I have had in Sidmouth. It was so good I have booked to visit again in a couple of weeks time. Highly recommend....

A group of 8 lively friends who enjoy swimming went to The Volly to try their Christmas menu. I had always considered this pub to be more focused on folk festivals, music, and beer, but I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food. The starter of Confit Shallots and Goats Cheese mousse on a homemade blini was outstanding. My roast turkey was moist and fresh, accompanied by a Yorkshire pudding that was both soft and crispy. It was one of the best pub roasts I've ever had. For dessert, I had a sharp lemon posset, while one of my friends enjoyed a generous cheese board. The service was friendly and accommodating, and the staff were happy to make last-minute changes. The wines were bold...

"We had two dinners and breakfast from this restaurant because we stayed in the Home Farm Hotel. We wanted to have the dinner and breakfast during our stay, but had to cancel our plans due to VERY POOR customer service received from Richard and also...because of his wife's cooking due to overcooked and burned full cook breakfast we received from the restaurant. Day 1, Richard introduced his wife to us, but she totally ignored us and in addition, she did not even bother to acknowledged and smiled with us. She seems to be very upset or very distance from everything or stressed/fed up about something at the time. Not sure this was due to over working… Day 1, Richard requested us to come down stairs for the dinner at 18:00, but instead of taking us to the restaurant for dinner, he tried his best to hard sell the alcohols he had in the bar to us and also to all the other guests. This happened even after we told him several times that we only want the meal and no alcohol from his bar. After about two hours, I had to tell him that I’m a diabetic and heart patient therefore I do really want to eat the meal and have a rest. He gave us the menu and I asked for lamb which was on the menu and he went crazy and said to us that they do not provide English food in this restaurant. I showed him what was on the menu, but he did not even apologise to us. He said lamb run out and asked us to select something else from the menu, again we selected duck, but that was run out as well!!! By then, Richard was sarcastic and rude to us as well as to other guests… In the end, we asked what we can have for our dinner. He almost shouted at us saying he and his wife only there to run the hotel without any staff therefore, we have to eat whatever his wife can cook!!! Finally, at about 21:00, we managed to have our dinner and I asked Richard to cancel our breakfast and dinner booking for the rest of the days however, he said we have to take the breakfast for next day because it was too late to cancel it. Next morning (Day 2), we were near the restaurant since 08:00 as Richard requested but as usual, past 09:00 we received burnt and overcooked full breakfast for two of us. They had a very large menu but it seems like most of the food either his wife did not know how to cook or had run out. Richard charged full price for our meals, BUT he FORGOT to provide the good quality food and services to the customers…"
