"We had dinner and breakfast at Botanica as part of a stay at the hotel. I have to say that the service of the restaurant manager really made our stay. I’m afraid I didn’t get her name, but she was so encouraging when it came to ordering what we would like at breakfast (all included in the package but we couldn’t decide/weren’t sure if we were ordering too much). We started with delicious pastries, had a main brunch item each and then the chia pudding to share. This was a perfect amount and each item delicious. The view was stunning and we were really relaxed- we joked about it being like a utopia. We had eaten so much the night before that we moved our breakfast booking to 11am which was as perfect for us. We appreciated the option to be flexible. At dinner, the same helpful manager offered to bring me some of the Stopham wine to taste. This was delicious so I happily ordered a glass and then went online to order some from the local vineyard. It’s lovely to see they support local producers. Our favourite small plates were the tomatoes, arancini, humus and focaccia, although it was all delicious. We both eat dairy and were surprised that we didn’t realise until ordering desserts and tea that the restaurant is dairy free. We didn’t miss this and I’d say don’t let it put you off in the slightest. The spa was also a delight on a beautiful summers day and the yuzushu spritz in the hotel bar is my new favourite spritzer! Overall, quite a bit of a splurge for a last minute getaway, but the food and service at Botanica made it feel worth it. Thank you! "I visited with my brother last Sunday and really wanted to love this café. First impressions were good: the location at the foot of the Downs was beautiful and the venue was set in a lovely old restored barn. We entered and alas downhill from that point on. A greeting and ordering procedure would have been nice but we were ignored so we milled around feeling a bit foolish, then picked up a menu and found an (unwiped table outside. The smell of frying bacon was enticing so we ordered bacon baps only to be told that the baps had run out! It was only 1.45pm. The reason given was that they had been busy . On a popular walkers and cyclists route on a fine weekend the demand should have been predictable and catered for: after all this café has been running for four years. I then tried to order scones but they had all gone too. We finally settled for lime cheesecake with raspberries (sadly no raspberries, ran out of those too , tasty but topping was melting; banana cake (delicious and coffee (lukewarm . The coffee was delivered after 20 minutes; 15 minutes later we 'd drunk it and still no sign of the cakes. When I went into the café the owner was holding a bunch of tabs and it was clear the system such as it is had unravelled: the owner herself said it was chaos. I was assured the cake was coming so ordered another coffee. The cakes came but the coffee didn 't (not written down so I had to remind again. People had been arriving but were being turned away as the café was I believe closing early. Our bill for two cakes (no reduction for the missing raspberries! , three coffees and dreadful service came to £17.50 which I reckon is pricey for such a poor experience. Reading previous reviews going back four years a common thread reoccurs: the whole operation falls to pieces when a 'busy ' period is encountered. Lessons should have been learnt by now namely, experienced staff, efficient system and sufficient food stocks. This café has such potential (I know, I have worked in several and with some effort it should reach it."

"I’d identified this pub as a lunch stop due to its varied food menu and association with the esteemed Dark Star brewery. On arrival we found that it’s no longer owned by Dark Star, and hence no longer the brewery tap, but that proved to...Not Be A Bad Thing as it’s now an unpretentious free house but still featuring several of Dark Star’s excellent ales as well as others from Harveys of Lewis (six quality real ales in all, iirc), as well as the usual lagers and ciders. Lunch choice was exceptional, with a really extensive menu of “traditional pub favourites” plus sandwiches, open sandwiches, various things on toast, a huge combination of toppings for focaccia melts, hot dog and burger options, a number of veggie choices. What impressed us was the ability to have many/most dishes as standalone snacks/starters, or as a full meal with chips, salad etc, while the main courses could also be had in small or standard portions. My wife had an avocado, bacon and cheddar focaccia melt with proper chips; I had a bratwurst hotdog with beef chilli, cheese and jalapeño topping. Quality and quantity was excellent and prices were extremely reasonable eg you can have a plain burger for The whole lunch, with two very filling meals, two soft drinks and two ales came to less than which I think is unbeatable these days. Ale-wise, I had two great new taste new experiences via a pint of excellent Dark Star Partridge best bitter, followed by a Dark Star Eastbourne Star winter ale which was superb. Needless to say, my wife drove as we continued our journey. We ate in the no-frills front bar, which is a high ceilinged Victorian room (the pub was once the Station Hotel); there are several other more atmospheric eating areas in the long side bar and a room beyond that. While some parts of the pub are in need of a little maintenance and tlc, it’s very obvious that the new owners (Mick Barry and daughter Rachel) are very serious about the choice and quality of their ales and food. We were just passing through, and the pub was relatively quiet on a Tuesday late lunchtime, so I hope the local community get behind them and give the Partridge the success it deserves."

"on Friday at 19 o'clock we arrived to find the restaurant with many empty tables – strange when booking for a weekend evening is some weeks in advance. we were met and asked if we wanted to sit in or outside. we decided to have a cocktail outside before we go back to our table. it is a beautiful place; outside view over the country in south lodge and the natural swimming pool and terraces below. very nice. in restaurant was airy, light and done very nice again. this is what they pay, although unfortunately the experience of eating in botanica is simply not suitable for the place itself. the menu is good. there are no appetizers, only several types of brot and the list of main courses is not particularly inspiring. I couldn't find anything I liked the look. Anyway, we ordered and were told that eating a little slow in the coming, as a large order had just been placed by another table (but the restaurant is only 10% full of the focaccia that we ordered as divided nibble, then came almost immediately (but what it was, 2 thick slices cold bread served with olive oil and, not balsamic, but a kind of malt or other sharp. it was generally quite unpleasant and we left it. then the main course came to us. my wife had something called gundi and I had seabream. the first tasters were in order (and our server made sure that they were wondering if everything was good), but when we found that my fish was cold on places, the kartoffels were not boiled with the gnudi and also not the “blood mary fries (basch chips with paprika on them) we ordered as side. yes, we ate it and no, we did not complain at that time – sometimes the ones who know that it is not so good to wash slowly over them and then they are exposed and just think about going home and that we did in less than 90 minutes. very unsatisfactory of what we had eaten and then think the price we paid £108 actually. to that end; under par and uncooked eating, no starter, very expensive drinks (Medizin cocktail £15) children run around the tables (yes, in an allegedly relaxing health saving) and a 12.5% service fee (for which we had to go to them to pay the bill only to allow us to go home). style over substance, smoke and mirror, inspiring and indifferent. we had a better meal in the garden center for £17 on the following Sunday – recommend to do the same. in the did has this latest post pandemic experience (but yes, it is post-pandemic now allowed without saying to this price) my wife has taken in the ground and I know that we go to jack-in so called fine restaurants experience as they just don't, and simply not worth it."
