"Haven’t been to The Gate for a meal for a while but have used the bar area a couple of times this year and the ambience and wine list are good. I wanted a light lunch so chose the vegetarian flatbread. It took almost 45 minutes to arrive and what was served was terrible, dry and over cooked. There was only about a tablespoon of topping- aubergine, onion and miso- spread in the middle of the overly crisp bread.No one came to ask if the meal was ok. My daughter thought her salad was average. All very disapppinting. It took a further 10 minutes to attract anyone’s attention to get the bill as the waitress was busy chatting to customers . I won’t be in a hurry to return to the restaurant."

"I booked the Crown for my mums birthday dinner on the Saturday 25th November as I had seen generally good feedback online. I used to frequent the Crown many years back and on entering the bar area I was impressed by the refurbishment as it does look very modern and stylish. Unfortunately that’s where the Crown continuing to impress pretty much ended for my guests and I. On arrival I let the restaurant know we had arrived a bit early and was told the table was ready, come through whenever..we literally finished our drinks in the bar and went through, only to be told they’d given our table away. Not great! Had to wait till other guests had finished, cleared/reset tables. Offered complimentary drink, of which only one turned up. To be honest, they weren’t particularly interested that we had to wait or drinks didn’t turn up..it was difficult to get anyone’s attention. The staff and staff in general seemed uninterested and overworked. Food in the end was pretty average..nothing special, except the price. Which although wasn’t extortionate, was pricey for average food. You get better for less elsewhere. It appears you’re paying for the nice setting..which is lovely until it becomes noisy, hard to get to the bar and doorstaff start policing the main entrance after a certain time. All of which detracts from what could be a nice place.. Would I go back..not for a meal as it’s overpriced and not all that really in terms of service or quality..possibly for a drink with mates. When I was younger this was one of the places everyone went to be seen, looks as if it’s still that place for some, just jazzed up and capitalising on the gastro-pub revolution. I’m also sure it’s part of a group, as I went to the Mermaid for Sunday lunch..v similar menu. However the food was exceptional, service was far superior and the bill was surprisingly low. In short the whole experience was much better..so if it is part of a group, then the Crown could learn a few lessons from the Mermaid."

"As for the food, it’s a mixed bag—some dishes are exceptional, while others leave much to be desired. Highlights of the menu include the grilled falafel and the pork belly, which are among the best I’ve experienced. But for me, the chocolate brownie steals the show and is the primary reason I keep coming back and recommending this pub."

"We've always loved the Marchmont, great building with tons of history but unfortunately let down by standard restaurant etiquette. We were led to our table by the very pleasant maitre'd to a very wet table which when wiped still had a watermark seeped into the wood. The side plates were dirty and the cutlery stained. Having worked in the business for over 30 years I appreciate being busy, but they weren't! The starters were well presented, but the chicken was tasteless and the koftas overcooked. Moving onto the mains, the wagyu burger was overcooked and dry and the crab and lobster tasteless. Overall, disappointing but we will always give it another go."

"I was recommended this restaurant by my colleagues, and I was not disappointed. The food was of a high standard and served in generous portions. However, the service could have been improved. For dessert, I ordered a mini dessert along with a hot drink, but I received the drink about five minutes before the dessert arrived, which was a bit disappointing since they should ideally be served together."

"many thanks for the great service and fantastic eating. as it turned out, this was our last meal before the finish and was a great place to celebrate my birthday. pay attention to all the horsehoes and keep them safe. "Excellent service and food on a very busy mothers day. Very friendly staff from the greeting by Paris, the waiting staff and the chefs Matt, Katie, Connor and Josh. A lovely menu, with plenty of availability even though it was late in the day. The food arrived in a timely manner and was presented very well, and tasted as good as it looked. We will be returning soon!"

"Although sitting in a plum area on the river and a stone's throw from the RSC, this place was a good value for money. More importantly, the vegan menu offers many possibilities. I'm sorry, I can't remember what was still on offer, apart from a lush salad, but I went with a flat bread in a delicious red onion Chutney and then covered with eggplants and oyster mushrooms and dressed with rocket. There was a selection of chips or salads that were also freshly prepared. The staff was friendly and the place has a lot of charm. I would definitely recommend and will return."

My reservation on this occasion was that it seemed that the cod in my batter (From the fish and chips I ordered) was overcooked, so that it was lacking in the usual firmness one would expect. I certainly intend to eat at the Hand and Sceptre again, however."

"I was really disappointed as I booked the Cornerhouse to take work colleagues out that had been visiting from the US, that had particular dietary requirements. In the past I have found the extensive menu to be very good and the dining room to be lovely. But on this occasion when I arrived I was told that the kitchen was being refurbished and so we had a limited menu and that the dining room was closed so we had to sit in the main bar area, which was noisy and full of punters. The limited food option was very disappointing as we had already selected what we wanted to eat in advance from the menu on the website (where there was no mention of the refurbishment) and when what we did order arrived it was under cooked and cold. We did not stay long and it was not somewhere that my colleagues will want to return to. Had there been any advance contact (as the restaurant had my details) it could have really helped to improve the situation."

"eating was amazing from the bark on the fryed to the fryed, all perfected in every sight. the atmosphere was like fine eating the walls plasted with a greenish teal blue with tasteful pictures on all, the staff was fast and had a nice setting to work. I and my family (no sister mama had a few of the same things, my mother sister sister and nan got a bark roast while I got the burger. the only fall of the meal was that there was no more of it! the burgers’ necks were so roasted that they were still soft, and absolutely amazing meal. the brat had amazingly cooked bark and the gravy was sweet and quite tasteful, the bratkartoffels, where crispy and very beautiful. we wanted to have a whisper, but it was too hot and we were full so we decided not to have it. I sincerely see no side to come here, eating was amazing, the personal was amazing, the atmosphere was amazing. they can go to a normal toby caraby or another local pub, but I highly recommend to come here, its a leak for the whole family and one that is quite well earned."

"We come to the Bell quite often and have always found it good value and an enjoyable experience. The Bull and Bush in Hampstead is my local from work and is the same group. I would usually give but on this occasion it was very cold in the restaurant. Our party was better fixed than those in the conservatory where two women were sitting huddled in their coats and walking through to the cloakrooms one realised how cold it was out there. We did mention it twice to our waitress but unfortunately we were fobbed off with excuses. perhaps the heating could have been on as all the radiators were cold."

"I had the best burger I've ever eaten, and the scallops as a starter were absolutely fantastic. However, the service was quite disappointing. We were not greeted at the door and had to wait five minutes before anyone attended to us. There was also no information about the complimentary Halloween cocktail I had received via email, and by the end, we had to settle the bill normally. Throughout our meal, no one checked in to see if everything was okay, which was a real letdown considering the restaurant had a nice atmosphere."

"Waited over 90 mins for food. Pub busy but not manic. People were leaving having waited for their dinner. Obviously the kitchen staff had lost it as manageress spent a lot of time helping out. Noticed a lot of meals being returned. When ours arrived two of them were nice whilst the other two were not good. Both were roasts and the veg was not cooked. The parsnips could not be cut, they were rock hard. The man on the next table left but did say that previously he had no complaints at all. We will go again because it cannot be that bad all the time judging by the numbers there. Thank you for the discount which was not asked for."

Unfortunately, just two days before our reservation, the King William VI restaurant called to inform me that they had to cancel our booking due to a double booking by OpenTable. "Haven’t been here for awhile after a less than great experience last time. This time was worse. Staff were overworked and weren’t looking after any table well. We had our starters on the table for at least five minutes before we got cutlery by which time it had gone cold. Several things had sold out including my first choice. I ordered an alternative. Our waiter returned to say that had sold out too and just stood over me expecting me to pluck another dish out of the air. We asked for another menu and he hovered over us waiting for me to make another choice. Drinks took ages to arrive. Meals came fairly quickly. Starters were passable if cold by the time we’d got cutlery. Main courses were awful. Side salads on the plates had shrivelled and wilted. Steak was cold and 40 percent fat/gristle. Southern fried chicken was like eating shoe leather. Vegetarian tart was cold and had tough pastry. Several other tables around also complained. Waiter was very apologetic and acknowledged there was issues. Won’t return."

"What a disaster. I made a reservation over a week in advance through OpenTable and received two confirmation emails. When I arrived on time, I was told there was no table for me. It took fifteen minutes to get the manager, who was positioned behind the bar, to address the situation. He spoke quite rudely and refused to help us. I highly recommend avoiding this place; they are completely unreliable."
