"Booked the standard afternoon tea at the Mandolay on a dismal February afternoon. I was surprised to see that there were pay and display machines on the hotel forecourt. It was pouring with rain but I did my best to scan the small print on...the machines to see if diners or residents get a discount for parking. Sadly not , nor does the machine give change! I decided to pay by card, for hours which I hoped would be a suitable time for us to partake of the tea time offerings. We were welcomed by a friendly receptionist who asked how we were. Actually soaking wet but that wasn't her fault. We were shown to our seats and a tea menu was brought to us. The tea menu itself was presented beautifully in a clasped box. Sample teas are contained in screw top jars within the box and we were invited to unscrew the jars to smell the teas. The teas offered were wide, varied and also unlimited. The restaurant was quiet with just a few friends gathered, sampling the afternoon tea as were we. The table linen was clean and crisp and service excellent. In due course a stand was brought to us with the usual fare of sandwiches, cakes and scones. There were fingers each of smoked salmon, coronation chicken, egg mayo and beef and horseradish. Before we started on the sweet items, we were asked if we would like more sandwiches but we politely declined. There were warm homemade scones, plain and fruited, (a little on the dry and heavy side) along with clotted cream and strawberry jam. Patisserie included a macaron, strawberry tartlet and chocolate cake each. The chocolate cake in particular was very light and delicate. We ordered more tea and the waitress very kindly provided a box so we could take home the strawberry tartlets that our tummies could not find a home for. The afternoon tea itself was nicely presented and plentiful and the service good. The decor in the hotel was not very cosy and I would imagine that the hotel would lend itself more to business or conference delegates. The parking situation was a bit off putting, this is the first time I have had to pay to park my car before dining in a restaurant or partaking of afternoon tea. I appreciate that the hotel is fairly close to Guildford Town Centre and they would need a deterrent to stop people just parking their car at the hotel and going shopping. However, I think it would be appropriate to offer free or discounted parking to residents or diners. Whilst the afternoon tea was acceptable, I think there are better alternatives around."

"My wife and I stayed here for a few days to celebrate my birthday. We chose Titchwell Manor due to its location on the A149. From here we can catch the Coasthopper up or down the coast. The bus stops are 100 metres outside the hotel. We were greeted in the car park and shown to our room behind the hotel. We had Basil number 21. It is a large comfortable room, with walk in shower and the fluffiest towels we have ever had. The room was very well heated and the bed was very comfy. Breakfast was served from a civilised 8am. The plate of fresh fruit was really good. If you choose to have you eggs poached they will be the most perfect you will ever have with their lovely orange yokes. The rest of the components were equally good and served with leaf tea or great coffee. The bars each had a lovely roaring log fire, where we enjoyed a drink before our meal. The menu choices we made were ham hock, brioche piccalilli and burnt apple purée followed by venison, Jerusalem artichoke and rainbow kale. The other choice was marinated beetroot, basil pesto and goats cheese cream followed by salt baked celeriac, sage and onion with crispy kale. Both meals were outstanding. The venison was very tender and the celeriac was outstanding. On the basis of this dish, a very under stated vegetable. Service was very good and served at a speed we dictated without the continual pestering we have experienced elsewhere. We will definitely come back here as the whole stay was a great experience."

"An invitation to sample a newly launched gin and tonic menu at The Polo Bar at The Westbury Hotel presented an excellent opportunity to discover a fine place to have a drink. Created by Tanqueray mixologist Tim Homewood and Polo Bar manager Elias Yiallouris, the new G&Ts are part of a “Botanical Brew Experience” collaboration between Tangueray No. TEN gin and Fever Tree tonic water. All feature the quadruple distilled gin and the premium tonic along with an intriguing array of fresh ingredients. Here’s a look at the menu: Blue Lady Tea and Grapefruit Peel served with Fever Tree Mediterranean Tonic – the exotic floral and citrus notes of Blue Lady Tea are lifted with zesty Grapefruit Peel, a refreshing thirst quencher; Fennel and star anise seed served with Fever Tree Classic – native to China, the liquorice aromas of Star Anise combine with the sweet, warm flavours of Fennel Seed for an oriental twist; Blackberry and hibiscus tea and lemon peel served with Fever Tree Lemon Tonic – Cleopatra’s drink of choice, ruby red Hibiscus tea is paired with fruity blackberries for a divine blend of sweet and sour; Cinnamon, clove and vanilla served with Fever Tree Classic – warming and uplifting, the soft, creamy flavours of vanilla are spiced up with aromatic cloves and cinnamon; Rosebuds served with Fever Tree Elderflower Tonic – reminiscent of an English garden on a summer’s day, the delicate notes of rose are given a rich, dry edge with the addition of elderflower essence; Pink pepper and orange peel served with Fever Tree Classic – the kick of spiced pink pepper is sweetened with a citrus orange peel, and garnished with an orange twist. I was pleased to be invited to the bar for a tasting and did my best to work my way through this drinks list “tough job but …” right? and especially liked that cinnamon and clove number and thought the pepper and orange peel mix to be a particularly fantastic ensemble. Priced at £15 each, all were refreshing and worth a taste. New cocktails or not, I found The Polo Bar to be an exceptional venue for quality sips. Bar snacks were ace loved the foie gras and the panko crusted prawns! and service was delightful and prompt. Upscale and low key, the bar is conveniently centred between Bond Street, Oxford Circus and Piccadilly Circus stations yet removed just enough from the fray to allow for decompression. With Art Deco inspired designer interiors with Swarovski and Fendi details, it’s a swish spot to keep in mind whether you’re mingling to impress or simply hoping to unwind in high style. And this just in … another reason to drop in for a drinky drink … earlier this month The Polo Bar won Best Mixology at the 2014 London Club and Bar Awards."

"You'd be forgiven for assuming that Kona would be in keeping with the opulent design of Taj 51; however, the restaurant is surprisingly modern. Neutral tones give the dining room a light and airy feel, with a variety of paintings hanging on the walls and elegant furnishings providing a sophisticated finish. Tucked away at the back of the restaurant you'll find The Library a warm and inviting space with plush sofas and armchairs; the perfect place to enjoy a night cap after you've indulged on some fine cuisine. Soft lighting helps to create an informal and relaxed ambience; the perfect setting for a romantic evening out. Our evening started with cocktails an off menu Strawberry Bellini for me and from the St James' Collection, Indy chose the Thanking Lord and Lady Dacre a fruity number but lacking any real alcoholic taste. This was followed by a delightful amuse bouche of cauliflower soup topped with a soya foam. A perfect creamy texture and rich in flavour, it set the tone for the standard of the cuisine we would be enjoying throughout the evening. Kona's dining menu offers chef Thomas Cruise's interpretation of the flavours and vibrancy of Southern European cuisine, married with traditional cooking techniques of the Cote D'Azur and Mediterranean coasts. There's a strong focus on fresh, sustainable ingredient across all the dishes which are, where possible, sourced from within 120 miles of London. Whilst the starters on the dinner menu seem limited, don't let this fool you into thinking decision making will be any easier. We contemplated for some time on what to order and finally settled on the king scallops and lobster bisque. The scallops were the real highlight, lightly seared and tender on the inside, complemented well by a butternut squash puree and light dressing of vanilla powder. Unfortunately, the lobster bisque was a let down. The presentation was fantastic, with the bisque being poured over the other ingredients from a teapot; however, the overly salty flavour and watery texture just weren't that great. For mains we ordered the sea bass and Gloucestershire free range chicken. The sea bass was cooked to perfection a crisp, golden coating giving way to a moist, flaky texture with the calamari and chorizo orzo adding another layer of flavour. And again, presentation was on point! The Gloucestershire free range chicken was also a delight with a crisp parmesan crust and a tender centre, with Indy declaring it was the best chicken dish he's tasted to date! The panzanella added a Tuscan twist to the dish and complemented it well. Our side orders of broccoli with red chillis and parmesan and creamy mash provided the perfect accompaniments to our flavoursome mains. No three course dinner is complete without dessert and Kona's dessert options do not disappoint. My previously undiscovered sweet tooth chose the orange and chocolate ganache; a truly indulgent dessert with rich flavours, edible flowers and brandy snaps. I just wish they'd made more use of orange as the chocolate did get a bit overwhelming. Indy's dessert induced some food envy on my part. He chose the thoroughly English fare of roasted apple on brioche with cinnamon ice cream, hazelnut crumble and berry foam. The apples were perfect sweet and juicy and were nicely completed by the cinnamon ice cream and berry foam. Although the restaurant was quiet throughout the evening, service was unobtrusive but attentive, let down only at the end of our meal when we had to request the bill on numerous occasions. Kona is the perfect venue for a discreet but indulgent dining experience and chef Thomas Cruise has done well in executing such a unique and flavourful variety of cuisine. We really enjoyed our dinner here and would definitely recommend it as somewhere to enjoy a romantic dinner or raise a toast for a special occasion."

"The 3 stars I 've given were based on my experience and not the food as unfortunately we didn 't order anything to eat. Upon arriving, we came to a sign saying please wait here to be seated . A young lady gave us a table number to accommodate our party of five, but we weren 't seated by her and went in the direction she showed (could of done this all by ourselves, unsure why she was there as not very busy). Only one menu, limited choice in price range variation. Would of liked a bacon bap, but this was on the breakfast menu and only served 9-11am I believe, so not an all day option for whatever reason. There were absolutely no sandwiches to chose from if you wanted a light bite and it was a case of get up and order at the till. Absolutely fine with that but when you see some of the pricing of the food, £18.50 for Haddock and Chips, I 'd of expected table service because those prices are definitely restaurant and not cafe rates. Seems Doddington aren 't sure which it is. We went into Lincoln for lunch in the end. Castle area, near the bail, where you can get excellent Fish and Chips for £15.95, from a proper fish restaurant and be waited on too. At the other end of the scale, there 's places that offer delicious homemade scone and toasties incase you are unable to stomach a heavy meal on a hot midday. No bank loan needed in the big city of Lincoln! Such a shame, Doddington Hall and Gardens were beautiful and staff very helpful, friendly and informative. Food pricing at cafe/restaurant really is expensive and capitalize on people not wanting to travel elsewhere for food. (Soft drinks and coffees were on par with everywhere else though)"
