"My elderly mother, a friend and I had a wedding anniversary lunch at The Midland today Monday) and had a really nice time. The setting by the river Goyt is charming. Our food including Salmon and Pork plus scallops) was well presented and tasty. The service was prompt and the atmosphere relaxed. We were not hurried away after our meal and stayed chatting. I would definitely book again."

"I cannot really decide how I feel about this one.. Anyhoo, thanks to Rach who offered to treat me for a birthday meal, we ended up here. Walking in, I thought it looked very lavish, with nice swish tables and chairs, emcompassed by world chart motifs on the wall. It was a nice dark and intimiate looking place. Immediately we were greeted by a lovely waitress who allowed us to choose our table. We chose a table near the stairwell which turned out to be wobbly. This was spotted immediately by a passing waiter who fixed it with some card. After the wobble, we scoured the cocktail menu, these were priced I average at £7..which is a nice expected price. It was refreshing for the cocktail maker to come over and ask us how we liked it , in my case if I wanted the mojito sweet or sour... or with a twist .. When the cocktails arrived, I have to admit I thought they were a bit weak, and did not blow my socks off.. Which was an anti climax considering he had especillay asked how we liked it prepared.. I just hoped the food would be better. The menu contains steaks, sandwiches, pasta, and various other gastro pub grub. I decided to choose the moules mussels with white wine sauce for a starter, to be followed by a goats cheese risotto after the waitress had recommeneded this. Rach had some beautiful meaty prawns and a steak. We did not wait long for our starters, and my mussels did look appetising. There were two things that I think they missed a trick on however. One , the bowl to place the discarded shells was too small and I had to balance them like jenga...and 2) the sauce was beautiful but I was not provided with a spoon to actually consume any of it. The prawns with chorizo that Rach had were really tasty, however there were not many of them.. Starters were soon whisked away and replaced with the mains. My risotto was really flavoursome, although I was still quite peckish after it. The steak Rach had was cooked perfectly rare as requested. Both of us still had room for dessert. I chose the lemon tart which was deceptively filling considering its delciate appearance, with a nice strawberry coulis to soften the blow from the zest. Rach's looked more impressive , it was a literally a chocolate tower which was soon demolished. Overall the level of service was impeccable, but I think the portions were slightly on the small side, and I think the bill wa expensive at £75 for a drink and 3 courses each.. The flavours were good but not good enough to reflect the price. I will come here again though with a steak eater due to the strong postivie feedback. I will just advise them not to order a cocktail."

"Food pricey . Nice ambiance in restaurant. We were the only ones eating that night . Waiter very attentive. Starters were both lovely but main course could have been served in a fish shop . I had fish and chips which was average but it wasn’t average price at £18 ! My partner had fish cake which again was very average . Beautiful setting . We had a junior suite which was a bit dated but it’s an old country house so couldn’t expect more . Half the hotel was being refurbished so was a smell of paint on occasion. Room though was massive and bathroom huge . Had a bath in the bathroom but would have preferred a shower . Was never given the option . Bed really comfy and huge . Would definitely stay again but hopefully next time we may be able to get one of the deals they sometimes offer . Breakfast was too expensive at £16.95 ! We decided to eat breakfast in a local cafe in the town costing £5.95! Bit different in price ! Anyway all in all a very pleasant stay for our anniversary."

"We were visiting relatives in the area and needed a nice pub for lunch where we could bring both of our dogs. I googled and found this. I called at 12pm when they opened and the lady that answered was so friendly and helpful. We went in at 2pm and she sat us at a great table in the corner which gave the dogs space to lay down comfortably and not be in the way. Such a dog friendly pub with the boys getting several treats each and a dog bowl, not to mention lots of cuddles!!!! The food came and we all had different things but we ate everything. The food was absolutely delicious and great value. My partner is Irish and he confirmed that this was the best Guinness he had had in 9 years of visiting this area!!!!! Cannot find fault with anything. The staff, the food, the atmosphere, the drinks and unbelievably dog friendly. I'm sorry I didn't get the lady's name who served us but it was the tall blonde lady, who was fantastic. The roaring fire was so inviting, we had to drag ourselves away. We will most definitely be back ."

"Warmly welcomed and served promptly and pleasantly after being seated. Our waitress was very helpful and well informed and provided various options/suggestions. Meal was very good and well presented and served promptly. Only issue was we had hoped to have coffee at the end of the meal. This was never offered so we decided to pay up and leave."

"My family and I visited the area for the weekend. We have a few dietary restrictions and I usually spend a lot of time searching for a good restaurant where we won't get sick. Due to arriving late, we lost our reservation, but the staff at the restaurant was very accommodating. They quickly set up a table for us (with a high chair for our little one) and even provided a quiet corner for our newborn. The food was delicious and they had plenty of gluten-free options available."

"Went for Sunday lunch to the Case in Altered in Old Reading. Pretty busy gastro pub. There is a more limited menu in a Sunday but still good choice. The chicken roast was a bit small for a hungry person but fair price for what you get which is a nice tasty quality plate of food. Lamb is better value as you get a sizable leg. For me I had fish and chips and that was lovely. Not too much batter and came dressed in a pretend newspaper. Little touches which make the difference. The staff were great which really was the best part- the manageress (Maria) made us very welcome even though we have never been there before and made a real fuss of both Mum and Mother in Law who not gone out much since Covid. (It was busy but they still got out food to us within less than 30 minutes too). Will go again and hope it less busy so can hear yourself speak!"

"Where do I start… From the initial conversations with Josh in particular weeks in advance of the actual party we were impressed by the professionalism of this restaurant. Communication with them was very helpful in getting across what we were looking for. On arrival our table for 12 was impressively dressed and the staff were courteous and friendly towards our needs. My starter along with Tommy my future bil of Calamari was delectable. The staff were very friendly and not overly pushy in pursuing drinks being ordered. Everybody’s main course was spot on with no issues whatsoever. Waitresses were quick to help us out with getting the 3 younger children their dinners desserts as soon as they possibly could to quell their agitation. The desserts were sublime with various choices available which in fact were ordered much to our satisfaction. Josh and his staff are an absolute credit to this restaurant and we as a family would love to return sometime soon for another celebratory occasion."

"I visited the pub by myself for Sunday lunch. I usually go there for drinks. I decided to try the Sunday lunch after hearing good things about it. The beer selection was great, which shows they take care of their drinks. The wine list was also very good, and I recommend the Chilean Sauvignon Blanc or the Marlborough. For my starter, I had the potato skin, which was surprisingly delicious and filling. The cheese and bacon filling was tasty, and the salsa was a nice touch. For my main course, I chose the Chicken roast, which was amazing. I also had Cauliflower Cheese, Pigs in blankets, and stuffing ball as sides, which I think are worth the extra cost. For dessert, I had the syrup sponge with ice cream, which was perfect. Overall, it was a great Sunday with good food and wine. Thank you to Noah and the kitchen team, Emma and Martin for the service, and Sarah for keeping everything in order. G x"

"This place has vastly improved under the more recent management the forever cheerful Gail and the rather dour Charlie (well he carries the burden of being Scottish). It's one of those delightful old English pubs that resists video screens and games machines. A log fire and lots of crannies to sneak into to enjoy the food. (Hint: Always try the specials). Recommended. Kid friendliness: Behave otherwise you will end up on the fire! Wheelchair accessibility: Direct and easy access from the adjoining car park. Price per person: £20–30 Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5 Parking space: Plenty of parking Parking options: Free parking lot"

"What a stunning place!!! We were lucky to come for a walk when there was a thick layer of snow. The George looked like in Narnia. All the Christmas decorations were beautiful. We stayed for Sunday lunch and food was absolutely delicious, best roast Turkey..."

"Really disapointed as was looking forward to trying this new restaurant. First of all it was very busy so had to wait ad keep look out for a table, then eventually when we did we had to find someone to clear the table of plates and then my mum went and found a cloth and spray to clean it as the staff were running round like headless chickens serving food, and only one memberof staff was taking food orders. On ordering we were told two of our meals would be without onion rings as they had sold out but they werent willing to provide anything else such as a slice of garlic bread or chips, infact there exact words were I dont know what you are complaining for, its only a couple of onion rings! Not really good customer service, especially when food you order is over £70!! We were old 40min wait on food but it was actually 1hour before it arrived, and when food did arrive sausages were missing off the mixed grill and then reallised coleslaw was missing off the brisket beef. The food was actually ok, just a shame about the lack of staff and customer service."

"On arrival given a table for two under the stairs facing the wall and a view of the toilets also shoved next to the stored baby chair, a really poor table. Mentioned it to the manager who was excellent and moved us to another table upstairs after half an hour even though they were really busy. Received a complimentary liquor and a desert to share. Excellent customer service. Food was really good, staff excellent, a couple of rowdy tables but after the table issue overall had a good evening. Steak was delicious."

"My very favourite place in Milton Keynes. This is a family run business and you can tell by the live they put in things. The owner lived having a good chat with the customers, share done Portuguese culture and warmth. The food tastes like Portugal, they bring lots of ingredient directly from there. You can buy some stuff if you want. Small and cozy is perfect for dinner with friends or family. I never get bored of this place!"

"The restaurant offers good quality food with generous portions, though it's slightly overpriced for what you get. While some dishes are advertised as Argentinian specialties, they're actually the chef's reinterpretations it would be more transparent to mention this on the menu. The service is a strong point, with staff being professional, quick, and attentive. However, the lighting is a significant issue. It's so dim that we, along with other diners, had to use our phone flashlights to read the menu properly. This detracted from the overall dining experience. Pros: Good food quality, generous portions, excellent service Cons: Slightly overpriced, misleading menu descriptions, inadequate lighting"

"Been here a few times each time really good experience, this time was a bit of let down as meals were 'thrown together ' no attention to detail, standard 'pub grub ' and way over priced steak very poor one over, one under and fatty and over priced. Rule of thumb to not send back, the garlic butter sauce was just a cream, no garlic did send that back. Probably won 't visit again sadly, was brilliant a few months ago. As a previously experienced 'gastro pub ' experience as a bench mark, we expected a few finer details in plating and menu options."

"We arrived and was checked in on the computer pad and told we would be at table 4. All good, we wasn’t shown a menu but asked if we were ready to order. As it was we only wanted a carvery, but it wasn’t that busy and it was a little disjointed. However didn’t spoil the lovely food and the waiting staff were attentative thereafter. Also fancied a pud but the apraxia were all gone and the dessert menu needs a bit more temptation. Enjoyed the food, very good carvery, worth the money, would have spent more if the puss were more captivating. Worth a visit. Will be coming again. Thanks."
