"Long time favourites of the Friars Head eatery and experienced it change hands a number of times. Took dad today for his birthday lunch. Although a limited lunch menu I believe there’s sufficient choice and the presentation and quality was delicious. I had the Eaton mess for desert which was lovely. The bar-man seemed a bit uninterested, but the restaurant manager was on the ball. We did wait quite a time even though the place was very quiet but it was worth it. We had three drinks, three mains and two deserts from the luncheon menu and the tab was £54. That is a ridiculously cheap lunch in my book! Will definitely be returning. We only had a drink here, but enjoyed it very much. Attached to a caravan site, I would definitely use The Friars Head if I was staying there.

Could be a great pub. Unfortunately have consistent staffing problems. So many staff left. Food ok but good staff are vital to the future of this place Food: 3 Service: 1 Atmosphere: 2

Went as a party of 5 for a birthday meal last night. The food was lovely, the staff could not have been more helpful and friendly. Service was great. Very atmospheric with the Christmas decorations and music. They even sang Happy Birthday. The seafood platter, Tuna and mulled wine were particularly nice.

Poor! Very Very slow service. Exceptionally bland food it's actually quite an achievement to make a bland curry, no sign of a spice! Cheap cuts of meat in the beef stew. Also expensive for the quality of the food. Very noisy and cold. Vegetarian options: Not good. Service: Dine in Meal type: Dinner Price per person: £20–30 Food: 1 Service: 1 Atmosphere: 2 Recommendation for vegetarians: Would not recommend

We had a small gathering for my husband 50th birthday last week here and the manager Craig couldn't do enough for us. He went out of his way to get my husbands favourite drink in Jim beam when they wouldn't normally sell it. We were stuck for time to put up the birthday decorations so he saw to that for us too. Pizzas were a massive hit with the guests. Thank you friers head Food: 4 Service: 3 Atmosphere: 3 View menu

Food itself was really and cant be faulted and they catered for gluten free. The waiters didn't seem to have a clue what was going on. Paid before our food came (foolish) one of the items wasnt available and they double charged us for what was already an overpriced burger. In all fairness the manager was really helpful and resolved it by refunding. Was an okay experience although let down by the rude old grumpy golfers that were also in there. Curry night. Pre-booked as requested as there was a group of us. We sat an hour without any food, food, when it finally came wasn't worth the wait. I can honestly say that out of the 7 of us, I don't think anyone really enjoyed it. Service all over the place like the right hand didn't know what the left hand was doing. The first time here, maybe last, will wait to hear if anything changes. Wanted so much to enjoy this, but hey, ho. Will say, though, the restaurant manager did apologise. "We had booked with booking.com . On arrival we were told that we didn't get breakfast included and that it would be £15 a head. We accepted this although thought was pretty steep for breakfast in a pub.The first morning we were given a menu clearly stating that breakfasts were included with all accommodation. I ordered poached eggs with smoked salmon and the other two ordered a full English breakfast which included homemade black pudding. The breakfasts arrived ,one of my poached eggs was runny, the other hard. The English breakfasts had no black pudding on the plates and when queried we were told that the deliveries hadn't arrived. Doesn't homemade imply made on or near the premises and as the owner states he is a butcher by trade I would expect he had made the black pudding. No alternatives were offered and presentation was distinctly lacking , with the baked beans poured over the other items. The next day I risked the full breakfast with black pudding which was lovely. But again the others had badly cooked poached eggs. We were offered no fruit juice, cereal or even toast and marmalade. On leaving we discovered the pub was unmanned , despite poor mobile signal. The owner turned up after 15 minutes. The bill was handed over, charging us for seven breakfasts when we had six, it was adjusted after he asked if one of us had had two breakfast one day? He served and cooked them so should know the answer to that. We were also then overcharged for nine coffee when three coffees and two teas had been ordered. Having had a family B and small hotel in York I advised him that standards were not what I was used to. I spoke to someone who had also visited recently and she stated a member of staff had charged them £15 per head for their similar breakfast where we were charged the menu price. Exceptionally poor menu, inaccurate advise saying breakfast included then charging us and probably the worst breakfast I have eaten in similar accommodation."
