"My partner and I visited here on a date night tonight. Situated within the Great Western Hotel by St David's train station. I have eaten in many Indian restaurants over the years, in both Exeter and the West Midlands where I am originally from. Being a Chef myself, I love to make my own curries both at home and as specials in the place I work. Because of this, I can be hard to please when it comes to dining out for a curry. Sadly, a lot of places in Exeter don't live up to what I had hoped for, compared to so many of the amazing Indian restaurants in the Midlands, but Karma is not only an exception, but an absolute gem! Fantastic service and the flavours, spices and aromas from the food are simply divine! I had the Lamb Karahi Gosht with Mushroom Rice, my partner had the Chicken Dhansak with Garlic Rice and we shared Garlic and Coriander Naan breads. Sometimes I have had Lamb curries where the Lamb has either been undercooked and chewy or overcooked and dry. I am pleased to say the Lamb here is cooked to perfection! My partner said her Chicken was also cooked perfectly. Both dishes were labelled as medium and were just that. As a fan of Indian food for many years, I have to say if you are in Exeter (I'm lucky, I live here) and you are looking for top notch Indian cuisine then you need to visit this place. Wonderful service, excellent food and very reasonably priced compared to other places closer to the city centre. Well worth a visit and we will be returning again soon!"

If we ever want to spend £45 on a few bits of chicken swimming in oil and onion (classed as Bhuna) and 3 charred king prawns along with a couple of potato patties (classed as starters) again, well look you up, Karma! (Hint: don’t hold your breath)

I wasn't able to dine at this restaurant because they never pick up the phone to take reservations. I've given up trying. How does anyone manage to secure a table here? This is Exeter, not the posh West End of London. Please start answering your phone, it's frustrating! View menu

We went to this restaurant for dinner because it was very close to our daughter's university accommodation. The food was amazing, especially the palak paneer and onion bhajis. The curry had fantastic taste and quality, and we highly recommend visiting if you are near St. David's.

We received a very friendly welcome upon our arrival at this restaurant. The service was efficient and welcoming, and the food was some of the best Indian cuisine I have ever tasted. Each of us ordered a different main dish, and they were all delicious. I highly recommend this place, as they have excellent COVID safety measures in place which made us feel very safe.

We'd been meaning to eat here since reading a rave review in the national press and were not disappointed. The menu included a choice of classic and unusual dishes including Indo-chinese. We chose the chef's lamb specials which were rich and flavoursome. The atmoshere was buzzing with full tables so advise booking. We've just booked again and this time bringing friends View menu

Billed as Indo-Asian cuisine, the menu offered a really nice combination of Oriental and Indian flavours which made rather special in comparison to the standard Indian and Chinese restaurants. The food itself was light and delicious, and was supplied with very friendly and efficient service. The restaurant is set in spacious and elegant Victorian surroundings (actually at the back of the Great Western Hotel), and this added to a thoroughly enjoyable and refreshing dining experience. As a habitual visitor to Indian restaurants I can confidently say that Karma has managed to provide something out of the ordinary.

The Karma is a little different to many Indian restaurants, firstly it is situated inside the historic Great Western Hotel, thus it wouldn't be right to decorate it with the flock wallpaper etc that is typical of its rivals. There are a number of other twists, due to being part of the hotel it is one of very few Indians that serve any draught beers other than Cobra or Kingfisher. Then we have the food, poppadoms are served in quarters in a bowl rather than whole on a plate. The onion bhajis were huge , larger than a cricket ball and delightful. We chose chefs special lamb curries, full of spice flavours, not in any way overpowered by curry powder. Even the rice was served with a little fried...

"Owner rude and arrogant! And you can’t trust them and they won’t make your order right by just saying too busy to make it right! I called in to make a booking but told no tables available but I could place an order for takeaway so I ordered two gluten free pizzas. I also asked what size are the gluten free pizza crust and was told 11”. I was told I would need to wait 1 hour 30 minutes and I agreed. I ordered the Gluten free 11 “ crust as advised for one Olive Tree and one Garlicky . When I arrived, I asked the person with the pizzas to confirm the gluten free pizzas. She looked a bit worried and said they were not gluten free. I asked the other girl if I would have to wait another 1.5 hrs and she said they would expedite my pizzas. The owner came over and said he had two vegan pizzas for 8:30 pm and I said that is not what I ordered. He said he was too busy to remake the pizzas. He said the girl that took the order said she didn’t remember gluten free was ordered. As a Celiac , those are the first words out of my mouth when I order any food and I also inquired the size of the gluten free crust and frequently they are pre-made and sealed and I was told they are 11”. He would not remake the pizzas as he said he has to trust his staff. So he implies the customer are lying and uses it as an excuse to not make it right. It doesn’t excuse not remaking the pizzas correctly as ordered gluten free as I was told a few minutes earlier. I assured him I ordered both pizzas gluten free and my wife came in and also confirmed as she heard me place the order on the phone. I realize this pizza must be well done and popular but not to remake the pizzas and imply me a liar and refusing to remake them is unprofessional. I find his behavior arrogant, rude and unprofessional and just because he went to Italy to learn how to make pizza doesn’t make him a good owner and manager. Hopefully, he won’t blow off this review but learn from it. Always make it right for your customers! And never insult your customers! It also suggest he doesn’t care about his customers because he is too busy. He walks away and just repeats he has to trust his employees. Poor excuse for not making the pizzas as ordered! Employees can make mistakes and as a Coeliac I will also double check as I did when I came to pick up the pizzas. I would advise Coeliacs to not try these pizzas as you can’t trust them to make them to your order. Peace be with you! Dietary restrictions You cannot trust this place to make your gluten free as ordered and they won’t remake it if they made it wrong and just say I have to trust my staff. Very Poor attitude from an owner and a bit arrogant! Customers don’t appear to be important and must be lying if they get an order wrong."
