"Not easy to find a place where they still serve steak and kidney pudding but the Alma does and tasty it was too. The suet layer just right, not too thick. Well filled, lovely gravy and roast potatoes and vegetables on the side. Wish it was closer to home. "The Red Lion is a very friendly place, both in terms of the clientelle and the wait staff. It's a gorgeous old pub, although the inside isn't quite as beautiful as the exterior due to some modernising touches. The prices are fair. We did find that in our main courses there were some overwhelming choices in terms of sauces bream with a very strong wine sauce, and a Chinese dish that had a very strong sweet soy base which was too strong for a broth. I think that the more traditional meat dishes are probably the way to go. We enjoyed our evening."

"Perfect for a mother and child reunion! The vegetarian options are plentiful and delicious. The service is satisfactory. We had a sit-down lunch here and the price per person ranges from £10 to £20. The food received a rating of 3, the service also received a rating of 3, and the atmosphere was rated a 4."

"Having been to the Phoenix several times and I believe, this to be my second average review of the food and service, you 'd think they would have taken heed, but clearly not. Firstly, like most top end restaurants in London, they are reserving the right to charge for no shows £20 per head). But, what they are also doing, which is very unfair, is charging you for cancellations within 24 hours of the booking at £10 per head. If one or more of our friends had fallen ill over night it 's the flu season at the moment), they would have been were forced to go for an expensive average Sunday lunch, whilst spreading their germs to the other diners. It also poses the question, what would some do if you book a table less than 24 hours like we did) and then decide to cancel? The excuse that orders for food have already been placed doesn 't really hold water. The Sunday menu forces you to order a minimum of 2 courses at £34 per head. Some of the top London restaurants are charging less for far more opulent Sunday roasts e.g. the Jugged Hare at the Barbican). The Sunday lunch served was simply very average and not value for money. Finally, why are the desserts here, always consistently so bad? I ordered a baked cheesecake and got cream squirted on a piece of cake. When I asked what I had been served, I was told it was chef 's interpretation of a cheesecake. The menu clearly stated baked cheesecake. Not even in my wildest dreams can you interpret a baked cheesecake as a piece of cake with creamed squirted on it! This was promptly returned and replaced with a vile chocolate tart, with pastry so hard I couldn 't cut into it without the fear of smashing the plate it was served on. The chocolate was over salted and the chantilly cream served with it unsweetened. Save your money, go elsewhere."

"Great Sunday roast. We booked a table earlier on same day and it was ready for us when we arrived slightly early. The pub was full, so I would definitely recommend booking. The food was lovey and with great portion sizes I could not quite finish my dessert! They checked about allergies and gave us extra gravy. Very good value for money and a great historical pub. Would definitely revisit if in the area again. Thanks for a great lunch."
