"We had a Sunday lunch and a mid-week evening meal at The Alma. Both were lovely. We were camping at Painter’s Farm, a 5min walk away so we’d booked to have lunch there once we’d pitched our tents on the Sunday. We found out they were having a charity quiz that evening and as it was too cold to sit outside, we decided to go back; what a hoot! Our team came last but we had such a laugh. Both the landlord and his team, as well as the locals were really friendly and made us feel really welcome. The landlady is the chef; and I must say, her Thai chicken curry was delish!"

A beautiful, proper traditional country pub serving fabulous, hearty pub grub. A real find will return.

Had a fantastic lunch. Food and service were both great. Definitely recommend. Young bar manager with the sticky out ears was brilliant.

The food was fantastic and the hospitality was top-notch! Although it may not seem like anything special from the outside, this restaurant is truly a hidden gem. Definitely worth a visit.

It's fortunate that they are open on Mondays. The food is delicious, with lovely avocado and smoked salmon, excellent burgers, and very tasty chips. I will definitely go back, as it is a great spot for a ladies' lunch. I enjoyed a delicious rose wine and received good service. View menu

We chose the Alma for a family anniversary celebration and we were not disappointed. We were made to feel very welcome from the start. The staff were excellent very enthusiastic all the staff going out of their way to ensure we had a lovely evening. A great rapport between George and the boss Richard! (Guess who! We enjoyed our food immensely, so full we couldn't manage a desert we shall leave that for the next time we visit. We can highly recommend the Alma for an enjoyable evening out.

Stayed at the campsite which is a 2 minute walk from this country pub. The Alma was a very pleasant surprise, the food is top notch for pub fayre, a rare for English pubs these days. We ate there twice and would highly recommend to anyone staying locally, the fish pie was delicious, the burger and steak and kidney pudding were super tasty and served with fresh vegetables! Don’t leave without trying the nachos which were fantastic! Lovely garden and very friendly accommodating staff. Dogs are welcome in the bar and garden. A great find!

"Having been to the Phoenix several times and I believe, this to be my second average review of the food and service, you 'd think they would have taken heed, but clearly not. Firstly, like most top end restaurants in London, they are reserving the right to charge for no shows £20 per head). But, what they are also doing, which is very unfair, is charging you for cancellations within 24 hours of the booking at £10 per head. If one or more of our friends had fallen ill over night it 's the flu season at the moment), they would have been were forced to go for an expensive average Sunday lunch, whilst spreading their germs to the other diners. It also poses the question, what would some do if you book a table less than 24 hours like we did) and then decide to cancel? The excuse that orders for food have already been placed doesn 't really hold water. The Sunday menu forces you to order a minimum of 2 courses at £34 per head. Some of the top London restaurants are charging less for far more opulent Sunday roasts e.g. the Jugged Hare at the Barbican). The Sunday lunch served was simply very average and not value for money. Finally, why are the desserts here, always consistently so bad? I ordered a baked cheesecake and got cream squirted on a piece of cake. When I asked what I had been served, I was told it was chef 's interpretation of a cheesecake. The menu clearly stated baked cheesecake. Not even in my wildest dreams can you interpret a baked cheesecake as a piece of cake with creamed squirted on it! This was promptly returned and replaced with a vile chocolate tart, with pastry so hard I couldn 't cut into it without the fear of smashing the plate it was served on. The chocolate was over salted and the chantilly cream served with it unsweetened. Save your money, go elsewhere."
