"St Jean du Gard in the Cevennes, on the river Gard, is not a town where you would easily find a good or excellent restaurant. Many have closed over the years due to the banking led recession so to find this little gem was a real discovery.Outside, the restaurant (and indeed it is also a hotel to boot with rooms from £54/night) does not look very exciting. Entering the front door the place seems at first quite dead (we were there at about 7.30 pm). There are however plenty of dining tables and chairs indoors, scattered in several rooms. However, in the garden behind the restaurant, there sits an enormous oval shaped conservatory. It was here that we chose a table to dine. There were several menus at differing prices and also á la carte choices. The service was very responsive and although as a party of 4 adults and English, there were no hiccups in ordering. It helps enormously however to try and speak the language, usually appreciated. The service was prompt and attentive, the wine list very good. However, after having chosen a 3 course menu, we were quite taken aback by the sheer size of the plates and food thereon. A starter 'salad Cevennes' was so large, including plum tomatoes, ham, filo pastry, salad, pimentos, peppers, sauce etc. that is was surely enough to be a full meal. Next came the main dishes, ranging from fish/crevettes to meat or vegetarian. The baked potatoes were wrapped in foil with a garlic butter fill and the courgettes were filled with a tomato based paste. There were egg based vegetable pancakes, very moist and tasty. Again the food presentation was exemplary and imaginative. Before we had ploughed half way through our meals the conservatory began to fill up with locals. The atmosphere was very convivial and buzzing. It was some time before we could contemplate our dessert and coffee as we were that full. And by the way, this was a Wednesday night!I have attached some images of the food and presentation. I believe the menu was about €20/person excluding wine/drinks."

Nice place for a quick lunch. We just had a snack but by the looks of the dishes being served everything seemed delicious.

Lovely setting in the garden and excellent food, particularly the inventive salads. Friendly staff and a wine list with some 50cl bottles. Recommended.

Reservations are essential during the summer. We enjoyed two meals at Les Bellugues. The salads were imaginative and generous, main courses very good and deserts also excellent. The staff were exceptionally welcoming and helpful.

so not worth the price you pay. the produce was very fresh but there was no originality to what was served. i could make the same thing at home but better. when i go out to eat i kind of expect to have a meal that is original and cooked with at least some finesse.

do not waste your time to search for the best restaurants in this small town. we all did and this was by far the best. the menu is original in comparison to other restaurants and prices are more than affordable with a large service on...before. we will go back there definitiw.

We blunder on this restaurant and stayed for dinner. We took the 3course menu. The starters were excellent and delitious. (salmon and duck) The main dishes were a bit les excellent( grilled duck and see fish) salad was ok, and deserts- ice creams were normal..:)Servis very friendly, but all in one: Too expensive for what it was.

Les Bellugues is a place where the owners wish to share their love for food with their customers. And that for a very good price. The lady who served mainly spoke french, but did her utmost to answer questions and clarify the menu choices. The food was excellent, as was a bottle of the housewine. My wife and I had a menu of € 28, which included an amuse, a starter, a spoom, an entree, cheese and a sweet dessert, and coffee or tea to close with. Be sure to make reservations well in advance, as the place fills up pretty rapidly.

We came to the Bellugues via a Hotel of the same name (they have different owners, but work together) The Hotel arranged a table for us at short notice and we were blown away by the attention to detail and the quality of the food....The staff were very friendly and knowledgeable about wines and the price you pay is low, a set menu with courses will cost in the region of Euros. With a bottle of local wine we paid Euros, and we were very happy, the fact that the restaurant was fully booked for the night with local families and couples is a statement of the quality this place offers. Highly recommended.

The staff were very friendly and knowledgeable about wines and the price you pay is low, a set menu with 5 courses will cost in the region of 25-30 Euros. With a bottle of local wine we paid 52 Euros, and we were very happy, the fact that the restaurant was fully booked for the night with local families and couples is a statement of the quality this place offers.
