"just fair because we had the Yorkshire plate, it was all kicked. not a sweet, only a potato fritter (can be somewhere cheese,) two crab cakes again not very delicious, a very small fish goujon in the teig with a small part of chips, and a deep roasted scotchei. none of them was great, and was served with four pots of Mayo/Cutney to give him a taste."

"We were on a short break in Thirsk in late September and looked for a pub that did food. We walked into the Black Lion and were immediately given a very friendly welcome by the landlord/owner and the locals already in there. We spotted some people with what looked like nice meals at the back so asked if we could have a drink first and then have something to eat. Of course! was the reply. When I mentioned that the lady in our party needed a bright table because of an eye problem, the locals, immediately, without being asked, got up from a brightly lit round table in the window and guided us to it. Our drinks were delivered to the table as soon as we were ready for another round, and then when our meals arrived, the food was lovely. The landlord had put us on a tab when we arrived and when we paid at the end of the evening, the cost was very reasonable. The landlord had even sent someone to the local shop to get orange juice, because they had run out, for one of our drinks. The beer was really nice as well. We were that impressed that we booked for the next night, and when we arrived they had set out the same brightly lit table in the window for us. Very nice thank you. We again had some more rounds of their delicious beers, and then a very nice meal again. All in all a great duo of nights. We will return to Thirsk and will definitely visit the Black Lion again."

"Although not local we don't mind the 45 min drive to eat here. Great food, really good prices, good portions, good staff although occasionally slightly inattentive but nothing to worry about. Nice atmosphere, always busy. We especially love the kids menu as it's something like 7quid for the children to eat some decent food with a drink and desert, when you think a happy meal and ice cream from MCshit is a fiver at least.... And the adult 2 course happy hour is great value."

"Went to the Little 3 in Thirsk for a night out to see a band play. It was a lovely evening the pub is hospitable and the outside beer garden area is fine. But there was a weird problem. I ordered a Bacardi and coke my date said she could taste no Bacardi. She was right. I ordered a second one, this time without ice. Same thing. No taste of Bacardi, no smell of Bacardi, nothing. I was quite sober as I was driving. And my date always feels the effect of one, let alone two, Bacardis but was feeling nothing at all. I checked with a third person, a guy who was also sober as he too was driving. He also could not detect any Bacardi at all. Now, it may be that all three of us were mistaken I should perhaps have ordered a neat Bacardi on its own to check what I was actually buying. Could it be that the Bacardi as sold is being watered down? I don't know and don't want to be unfair to this pub. But three adults, none of whom were drunk, were unable to detect any Bacardi at all in two successive Bacardi cokes. Make of that what you will."

"This USED to be a great value place to eat and drink. BUT now it’s really downgraded. Don’t get me wrong if you enjoy the staffs screaming kids running around bumping into to you then its the place to go. The food used to be hot tasty and a realistic price but now its all frozen veg overpriced small cold portions and pricey beers. The toilets always stink. Still no lock on the ladies door. The outside area is always a drab mess which when nice weather has the same kids kicking footballs about. The staff always look miserable and non helpful and treat it as a family crèche and family gathering event rather than immerse themselves into what could be a rather profitable business. Give this place a swerve ….. don’t get me started on The Vale of York either "
