"We were on a short break in Thirsk in late September and looked for a pub that did food. We walked into the Black Lion and were immediately given a very friendly welcome by the landlord/owner and the locals already in there. We spotted some people with what looked like nice meals at the back so asked if we could have a drink first and then have something to eat. Of course! was the reply. When I mentioned that the lady in our party needed a bright table because of an eye problem, the locals, immediately, without being asked, got up from a brightly lit round table in the window and guided us to it. Our drinks were delivered to the table as soon as we were ready for another round, and then when our meals arrived, the food was lovely. The landlord had put us on a tab when we arrived and when we paid at the end of the evening, the cost was very reasonable. The landlord had even sent someone to the local shop to get orange juice, because they had run out, for one of our drinks. The beer was really nice as well. We were that impressed that we booked for the next night, and when we arrived they had set out the same brightly lit table in the window for us. Very nice thank you. We again had some more rounds of their delicious beers, and then a very nice meal again. All in all a great duo of nights. We will return to Thirsk and will definitely visit the Black Lion again."

Lovely friendly staff and pooches. Shame the pub smelt awful and was very dirty. Hygiene a real problem here.

Best steak pie, chips, gravy peas...not to mention the excellent service. Worth the 5,000-mile flight from Colorado.

Beer OK bottle of coke £3.50 shocking. Nice people here tho and dogs allowed which is good. Still not happy that beer much cheaper than coke

Wow! What an amazing pub. Really friendly staff. Great beer. Dog friendly and food was delicious. First impression was perhaps the food was a little on the expensive side but oh my gosh. When it arrived it was worth every penny. We’ll done guys. We will definitely be back. Places like this are hard to find. View menu

The food was good, but the premises were not good at all. There was a bad smell, like urine and dogs. My wife said the toilets had no hand drying facilities and there were large poo stains on the porcelain. We hoped for a quiet meal, but the other clientele were swearing very loudly, even with children in near proximity. Even the kitchen porter lady was joining in, most unprofessional. I fear we will not visit again, it's just not our scene.

Booked in for Sunday lunch at 12.30 for four of us, drinks were served promptly and order taken. Approximately 1 hour later lunch was served, topped with an extremely burnt Yorkshire pud. No idea why it took so long as it was just mash, small overcooked roast potatoes, veg and precooked beef. We asked the waiter if it was possible to have the Yorkshires exchanged for ones that were not burnt, he returned with a tray of less burnt ones saying that’s all there was. On further investigation the Yorkshires were frozen on the bottom, a feat in itself to serve burnt Yorkshires that were still frozen, we were told that they would deduct one meal from the bill for the inconvenience. Will not be retu...

"We arrived here for a 2 night stay for a wedding (Fri sat night). PROS: Lynsey the manageress she 100% makes it so fabulous. Lovely, welcoming, looked after us brilliantly. Due to some staff shortages, she was doing what seemed like 10 jobs at once! We ate on one of the nights food was delicious! Great service tasty food. Breakfast was also spot on set us up brilliantly for the day ahead on the Saturday! The Willow room which we stayed in was fab ideal size, lovely cosy too! The whole 2 night stay was extremely reasonably priced the place itself has a great feel about it like a big cosy house! CONS: If you like total darkness, take an eye mask for sleeping as the rooms can get really bright from the early hours. Also, depending on the room, it’s on quite a busy road so can be quite nosy it would be worth having earplugs if you like a quiet surrounding. Due to staffing, the bar doesn’t stay open that late, so be mindful of this, they will however put drinks in your room if you can’t make it back in time for the bar closing. Taxis there are no local taxis, so arranging transport to the wedding we were attending was a nightmare which we didn’t account for! Luckily after 6 different phone calls, we managed to get sorted. The only gripe I had was the confusion over the bill if you decide to charge things to your room, the bills aren’t itemised so it’s difficult to keep track of what has been charged. There was some confusion on checkout over what we should shouldn’t have been charged for, so definitely choose to pay for any extras outright to avoid any confusion or uncertainty before check out. Other than that, it was one of the nicest, most personal stays we’ve had out in a long long time. This was mainly down to the Manageress Lynsey who is fabulous at her job really does make it feel like home makes you feel super welcomed relaxed. Thank you lynsey for really making a stay a one to remember."
