"A modern country house restaurant with a comfy lounge that hints at the 20th century history of the Armstrong-Jones era. Fabulous cocktails! Unfortunately while being provided with a gun room menu we didn 't get to see it as we were part of four group 6pm sitting. We were guided to a small room, that may once have been a boot room, as it had a single door leading outside. Decor was gloomy. This room needs careful negotiation if you find three steps down difficult as the ironwork handrail is low. I couldn 't help my husband as I was left carrying the drinks glasses which the front of house member had not offered to carry and had no tray with her to do this. Not a relaxing start to the evening. Once seated in a low chair (another table occupant commented on the discomfort), we considered asking for cushions to sit on..but settled to enjoy our special meal. It was served in a friendly, yet professional manner by our waitress who 'saved the evening '. The food started well; the pre-starter and Asparagus were lovely. The main was disappointing, set aside the tough beef, the vegetable sides had obviously been forgotten and arrived after I reminded them and after the time they would have taken to plate up. The chips were solid, dark brown and gastro-pub style. We left them. It was good to hear that dietary considerations were well tended to for another table, as indeed ours had been. So five stars for this. Our meal slid to a halt with an adequate, but not sparkling, dessert choice. Coffee in the lounge was not an option for our sitting as the 8pm people were still in the lounge. When we saw coffee being served at an accompanying table (with that explanation) we chose to leave and go home to relax. The staff member on farewell-duty, was once again the lady in the black dress, who had shown us to our table. I was left to find my husband 's coat on the wooden hall stand... Maybe our experience was a one-off? It 's unlikely we will find out."

"This is a cozy place for a drink on a cold winter's day, but I wouldn't eat here again. I had their weekend lunchtime meal deal which is pretentiously overpriced for plain or poor quality food. The mains were plain, not worth a return visit for, but at least the portion sizes were good. However, it's the quality of the starter and dessert that really let the meal down. I've had carrot coriander in quite a few different places by now, but never had one with a flavour this strange and jarring. It was inedible and only ate the roll. The waitress who collected our plates must have noticed the bowl full of soup left behind, but said nor asked nothing about it. My impression is that is must have not been the first time she's seen this and didn't want to get into why it was left like that. I don't blame her. Their leek potato was also really bland and flavourless, and not an advisable alternative. The quality was so poor that I assume they must buy in really cheap tinned soup from a catering supplier. Come on people! Making good quality, homemade soup is really not difficult! The brownie I had for dessert....seemed to have been made by someone who doesn't really understand what a brownie is. The joy of brownies are that they are richer and squishier than cake. However, the brownie I had was risen quite a bit, indicating too much time in the over maybe or two much raising agents, was much closer to dense cake. There wasn't anything soft or moist about it. It wasn't good in flavour either pretty bland really. This is something you find when a producer is trying to lower production cost as much as possible they cut back on the cocoa powder as it's more expensive than flour, or they use the cheapest stuff possible which gives food a chocolate custard type of flavour. Also why does this place have a taxidermied tarantula in a box on the wall?? So strange!! Of all the things you might want people to see when they're eating, I'd say that isn't one of them! I wondered if it had been left behind as a Halloween decoration or something."
