"I visited The Cowshed with my fiancé on a Saturday night out. She had heard good things but I’d never heard of the restaurant before.Arrival was interesting as it is down a narrow country lane and the entrance sign is hidden if coming from the Wolverhampton direction but we found it eventually. The car park isn’t very well lit or surfaced which in the wind, rain and my partner wearing heels wasn’t the best.Once inside it’s very welcoming, the staff were lovely and wanted to make sure everything was excellent for our visit. Unfortunately after us having one round of drinks they never checked for any more. We also found as the night got busier the smaller room we were in was really a corridor down to the busier back room with a flurry of people coming through somewhat ruining the atmosphere. The menu is quite limited but we both found something to eat without issue. The starters and mains were lovely, the hand cut chips and steak especially. The desserts seemed a little lacking, almost mass produced in comparison which was a shame.Overall for a smaller independent restaurant its’s a nice place to eat but needs a little more polish to be really good."

"Had lunch in The French Horn a few weeks ago after a windy dog walk at Sharpenhoe Clappers the owners also now have The Crooked Billet which is my local, so we thought we'd check it out. I had the sausage and onion sandwich with quite possibly the best skin on fries I've eaten in a long time! The staff were really friendly and the bar had a nice atmosphere. It's quite a big pub with large dining areas and I imagine gets very busy in the summer. All in all, well worth a visit if you're in the area."

"First visit having moved to the village 6 months ago. Waited an hour for food, steak arrived uncooked despite requesting medium, when requested it be cooked a little more it still returned incorrectly cooked. Steak was expensive so requested to discuss bill with manager who...advised that all food cooked fresh hence the wait (does it really take an hour to fry some fish and chips and veggie curry? These dishes were OK though). Manager refused to admit there was anything wrong with steak but on this occasion agreed refund, which was fine as won’t be dining there again."

"Me and my family decided to have a meal at the bank house as we saw on Instagram they had a Prix Fixe Menu and we are currently on holiday in Kings Lynn. We had a lovely meal at the bank house last year and when we saw the menu of 2 course for £16 and 3 courses for £20 advertised, we thought this was such a good deal! However, we arrived at the Bank House and when seated we’re only given the normal menu. I then asked the waitress if we could have the Prix Fixe Menu. The waitress then said we don’t do that and a lot of people have been asking about that. I then said to the waitress that it was posted on their instagram six days ago and then reposted two days ago. The waitress then said oh I don’t think it’s on today and I then mentioned how it said that it’s from Monday to Friday from 12pm to 6pm. The waitress then said she will go and ask the manger. They then came back and said that it shouldn’t have been posted yet due to issues with the chef and said they we won’t be offended if we leave. We decided to look at the menu but then left to eat somewhere else after feeling disappointed. I do feel that they should remove the posts advertising for the Prix Fixe Menu (on Instagram and I presume on Facebook too) as it could encourage people to book but then to found out it doesn’t actually exist and may be too embarrassed to leave. Also this is a bit unfair on people who may be on a budget who are looking for a nice meal as a family treat. Hopefully they can sort this issue out as it would’ve been lovely to try this menu, but it should be taken down as it is still posted on instagram."

"Came in for lunch, looked at the menu as given to us and not informed that numerous things were missing. When ordering we was told there was no lobster for the prawn and lobster cocktail but we still ordered it. I ordered the Henry burger that is a 25.00 burger so you expect something decent. The burgers were dry and over cooked, short rib burgers should be bubbling with juices but no,chicken was dryish and chewy, no gammon and the fried egg was way overcooked. I get that it's a big feat making something like this but everything tasted precooked and thrown on the grill to bring up to a higher temperature. Items were definitely left in a merry chef or some kind of hot hold. I personally would not recommend this burger but the others look quite nice and a bit easier to make. I wasn't going to quibble as it is what it is and the staff seemed sufficient for the job. Very hit and miss here as my brother in law had a great meal last week but as an ex chef maybe my standards are a little bit higher... Who knows !"

"Was very excited to visit the pub after reading the reviews posted on here last night being 7th March although it was early doors came away a little disappointed. The barman/ waiter appeared to be the only person on duty and really dressed for the occasion. He was polite and friendly but stretched we placed our order waited it arrived. One fish dish and one meat dish great emphasis was place on bringing us our jus to accompany our meal. My plate consisted of rubber cold french beans a splodge of equally cold pea puree although the lamb was cooked to perfection as were the very small portion of potatoes, my husband fish equally as good but was accompanied by the same red meat jus as mine and noticed when leaving most of the restaurant had. (it was very similar to bisto) we asked to see the desert menu it eventually arrived but was then left for a considerable amount of time as the conversation at the bar was a little more important needless to say we paid and left so a little uncertain about a return visit. To sum things up the meal was mediocre if not a little petite lacked vegetables and tepid. Really had this down as our nxt fav restaurant in Alton ."
"We've been here many a time however today's will probably be the last. We didn't have a reservation but we're able to get a table saying how busy it was. We ordered drinks and food pretty quickly. We noted that there were 3 people taking orders and 1 behind the bar, this resulted in drinks being poured then sat at the bar. We eventually got drinks after around 6/7 mins of them being sat on the bar. We noted that there were not enough staff. Drinks were piling up on the bar, food was sitting on the pass waiting to go out and people were queuing by the entrance to be seated. The staff just couldn't cope. I wouldn't even try ringing no one answers it even when they are standing next to it doing nothing either. After 45 mins of waiting for food and table next to us receiving their starter and then mains (ordered after us) we queried our food. We were told that we ordered after the table next to us and that it depends on what we order. I know this is incorrect as the person has allergies so the waitress went through what they could and couldn't eat. Also it shouldn't matter what you order it's when the order goes to the kitchen that matters. We were told we were next however 15 minutes later the food came. Don't get me wrong the pies are lovely however the pastry lids have changed and are no longer puff pastry more like flat uncooked lids. We won't be visiting anytime soon. There's a serious issue with service and there needs to be more staff. Having drinks sit on the bar for 10 minutes isn't good. Shame really could be a great place to visit"

"Food was kinda ok but it 's just the little things that make the big difference. Why is the cucumber a sorry excuse of a slither ...just cut it normally. If it 's in a packet...get a cucumber from the Aldi opposite for 40p. Why is the side portion of onion rings on a plate that is meant to be worth £17.45 half the side of the other one. If it 's not great out of the packet, don 't use it. Why is the 'salad ' on a £14.55 burger plate a tiny bit of lettuce. No mixed grills or fish and chips available. Service was good and staff were nice and I know it 's 2-4-1 so you get what you pay for rule....but the little things to push up the plate a little will make the difference on what otherwise could of been a nice visit. Contemplating other meal places in the future now....we wouldn 't have done had the above just been that bit better."

"Having been a mainstay in Poulton for over 30 years you pretty much know what you are getting, the menu doesn’t change apart from daily special and if you have a seat by the window there’s a good view too We haven’t been here for ages so looked for a bit of nostalgia on a very busy Saturday evening without a booking. As always they do everything to get you a seat asap and we got a table without waiting Mixed reviews over the food, my husband’s salmon pasta he said too him back to times past and met expectations. However (and sadly) not so for my pizza which whilst cooked on the top was a little doughy in the middle. Perhaps I’m fussy about pizza having such great pizza restaurants in Poulton (Pulci, Brew and Bones) but this wasn’t really for me. All in all, an ok experience, it was very busy, we were grateful to get a table, others loved it so maybe just an unusual service night for them affected my meal."

"We visited this restaurant for dinner based on my brother's recommendation and were thoroughly impressed. It is a fantastic spot for a meal, featuring friendly staff and a warm, inviting atmosphere. The selection of tapas was excellent, with plenty of choices available. The quality of the food was outstanding, and it was served at a good pace, ensuring we always had plenty on the table. The desserts were also delightful, and I would even say they were better than the main courses—but everything was really excellent. Given this experience, I wholeheartedly recommend a visit. I would definitely return!"

"From the moment we walked in, everything about the Bell was apparently just right. A busy bar with good ale. Dog friendly throughout with a wonderful letter personalised to our dog by name and including poo bags, toys and treats. The staff are all charming and the location in the centre of the village is perfect. Evening menu was limited, but the food was excellent and breakfast was equally good. The whole place is very quirky and doesn 't take itself too seriously. The dining room ceiling is apparently held up by a column of books, we had a tree and a barbers chair in our room! Overall a great find and I can see why it has won awards 'apparently '!"

"My family and I had such a lovely time here this weekend. We came for afternoon tea for my dad’s birthday and the food was amazing! Actually one of the best afternoon teas I’ve had and my dad absolutely loved it. I’d never heard of here before, I travelled from Hertfordshire as my parents live in Norfolk. My dad loves an afternoon tea and so for his birthday I wanted to go somewhere on the broads as it’s lovely there and came across Staithe and Willow and I’m honestly so glad I did Not only was the food amazing but the staff were so friendly too, the cafe itself is so cosy and welcoming. I can’t praise it enough, thank you for such a lovely experience"
"Thursday lunch , dinner and a pint ! Why not. London Pride well kept crisp pint. The first pint was a little tepid but the second was a lot cooler and both tasted as they should. Fish and chips. For me it was a little bit mixed. It wasn't the cheapest fish and chips, and price isn't a problem as long as it is good value. £13.95 Breakdown. Chips were good and crunchy. Not greasy. Fish was a good size and cooked well. Good flaking meat and not overcooked at all. There is a but! It's a small one , but the batter was a little oily for us. Nothing major. Peas good. Had to ask for tartar sauce and was not homemade. I don't think). The lemon wedge was just about visible! It felt a bit overpriced. Staff were friendly and laid back"

"Really nice, had driven past a lot, didn't think it looked like much but finally went in and glad we did. It's bigger than it looks inside and out and the garden is enclosed and has a great play area with loads to keep kids busy. We sat at a booth inside and had great service. Good menu too and the food we ordered was with us reasonably quickly, well priced and delicious. Will be going back. Service: Dine in"

"£12.50 for seven small pieces scampi and many chips and small pot of mushy inherited. the young man behind the bar who said he had a word with the cook. I obviously didn't say a comment from the cook at the time, he looked embarrassing, it was like what it was, what it was so hard. also hanging on the menu my meal would have included a beside salad."

"Popped in for lunch. A lovely pub with lots of character, wooden beams, stone floors and exposed brick walls and quirky traditional seating. Thank goodness it doesnt look like every other pub. The burgers are really good and you can build them to your preference. Worth a drive out. Always a great welcome"

"Young chap with blonde hair (don't know his name) behind the bar was very nice. We went 2 nights in succession, once in the restaurant, once in the bar area. Food was delicious and beautifully presented. There was a tv which was thankfully off and background music which was just that, so good for us. It was tastefully decoated and furnished. Overall ambience of upmarket and quality. The weather was abominable and we went at night so can't comment on the outside. We didn't use the toilets. We would certainly return."

"Went in for lunch as we had been at caravan showroom. Used to come as a kid. Very disappointed place is tired and rundown, self service cakes in cake case had no description of what they were no allergen information. Asked at counter what they had gluten free and explained my daughter is Coeliac, young lady serving was helpful explained what they had. Ordered two gluten free macaroni no chips as they are cooked in same fryer as other items( not a problem) when meals arrived we thought wow looks really good after tasting we knew immediately it was not gluten free my husband took my daughter’s back in and the main lady’s attitude was not very nice and said it’s made with plain flour and pasta explained this was not what gluten free was and asked for refund. Definitely won’t be back and they need to get their staff trained up to know what allergies are and the consequences. Avoid if you have allergies"

"we are so glad that we have booked this pub for lunch as stop on our walk along the ridgeway at one of the wettest days in the year. the greeting was fantastic and the renter fired a fire to dry our tired bones. the lunch was great with a very varied menu with many veggie options. great service without hanging around waiting for much needed eating and a good pint! thank you."
