"The reason I give 1-star is based on my email conversation with them, not the experience in the pub. The pub is amazing. I give 1-star to grab attention to an important matter than it was ignored in my conversation. Today I went for a run, and a bus almost hit me with a mirror. My partner knows a person that was killed by a bus mirror. What is the problem at Catherine Wheel. The hanging baskets. I told them years ago that I was almost hit by a bus mirror because of the hanging baskets, that only one person at a time can squeeze between the traffic light and the hanging baskets. This 1-star is for whoever was involved in a bus mirror accident, and for all these places that think they are doing something amazing by hanging the baskets to the head level and forcing pedestrians to put their life in danger for some **** flowers. I am 6 feet 4 and I am scared that one day a bus mirror will knock my head and leave me with a serious injury."

I've lived, on and off, in Newbury for 20 years and never been in the Catherine Wheel, despite admiring the pie and beer options. It didn't let me down. An excellent, friendly pub with good food and a great selection of beers, cider and gin.

The best pie pub ever! A great selection of different pies and sides. We had the Sag-pie-neer it was beautiful. Serving ales etc, clean, very friendly and the most reasonable prices we have come across. Definitely worth a visit, you will be pleasantly surprised.

Visited for the first time today after a recommendation. We were not disappointed. Pies were amazing, service was superb. One of the bar staff even got me a mug to prop up my phone so we could watch the Ashes and the British Grand Prix at the same time. First Class. View menu

Best pub in Newbury for beer and cider choices, not even a question there! On top of that, for those that dabble in pork scratchins it's comes out warm with apple sauce, hummana hummana hummana! Great outside area with screens, I was just watching footy with sunshine and a breeze, very nice!

Strange layout to the place. Long and narrow. Excellent choice of ales. However, if you are looking for spirits and mixers it is VERY, VERY expensive. Was asked for £6.05 for a single rum and soda. Walked out and went over the road where I was charged £2.00 less for exactly the same drink. Really, really bad.

Great meal here with the gluten free pies and the fantastic gin bar. Very knowledgeable bar tenders who where able to recommend a fantastic gin to me. The upkeeping is good and wasn't to crowded . There was a 40 mom wait for food however we where informed on ordering and wasn't a issue. Definitely would recommend coming back here. View menu

Delicious Vegan Pie! This was my second visit to this pub I was not disappointed. First visit I had the Mooless Moo this time the Mock a doodle, both options were excellent. The vegan cauliflower cheese was also great. My parents aren’t vegan and we’re equally impressed with the Moo Blue and the Deer stalker pies. Definitely worth a visit.

Booked a table for 7 of us last week for Father’s Day. Had been here before and the pies were quite nice! However this time we waited almost an hour and a half for our food to arrive. The pub wasn’t busy and there was only one other big table ordering food. When the food had arrived a lot of the pies were still cold or lukewarm in the middle! Not great as we had waited so long to eat. If you don’t have the kitchen capacity to cook pies then close the kitchen instead of having hangry customers! Service was ok… could’ve been better! Real shame
