"My partner and I stopped at the Douglas for a late lunch on the 15 July 2023 , we picked out eats from the board on the wall ,we both selected starter Lamb Terraine and chutney followed by haddock and chips, the lamb Terraine arrived and we both delved in, many times in other establishments we have enjoyed this dish, how disappointed we were, what arrived with the chutney resembled a square block of peat, it totally had no taste resembling lamb we both have still to establish a taste at all, the most horrible excuse for a lamb Terraine, the chef had us totally confused to what we where eating ,by the time we decided to complain the fish and.chips had arrived, absolutely gorgeous and excellently presented, I just hope this was a blip in the Douglas as this was the first time we ate this starter??? ,We passed this information to the young lady who served us and asked this to be passed onto the chef she said she would , we got no response I tried to contact the complaints on the website unfortunately there is no facility on the site to publicise a review, as we are regular patrons to the Douglas please management tell me this was a blip and won't be repeated."

Good service, good food, very friendly and reasonably priced. My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our experience in the restaurant.

Wonderful service from the staff on arriving at reception for accommodation and booking tables for dinner. Good service from the bar staff, even when they are busy

Nice looking dining room but the food wasn't good. Chateaubriand served on a hook (why?! and dreadfully overcooked. Burger was dry with only a bit of avocado for moisure, wasnt seasoned at all. Only positive was our daughter's fish and chips was good.

Service was horrible. Drinks only came after the starters, when we sent the mains back to the kitchen with the words: no drinks, no food. Further sinned against EVERY rule of hospitality. Maybe enjoying their nearly monopoly position on the island a bit too much. Food was ok though. View menu

The restaurant is in a lovely building and the menu is extensive and fairly priced. The fish and chips was the best I have eaten and at £13 included really tasty peas and home made tartar sauce. The drinks were very sensibly priced. It will be my go to place every time I am on Arran.

The bistro was pleasant welcoming and very pleasant members of staff who made our stay enjoyable. We had a toastie which was okay but to just put a single sliver of lettuce was really disappointing should have had a small salad to make it attractive not just 2 slabs of bread it was disappointing to say the least.

Ended up eating here 2 days running, as all the other restaurants nearby were either closed or full. The food is perfectly fine, although I found it quite hard to pick on the 2nd night I had decided on the mussels, to be told when ordering that they were not available. It might have been helpful to tell us that when handing out the menus ? The location is lovely and the staff friendly. View menu

We booked The Douglas for our honeymoon and we absolutely loved our stay! The staff couldn't do enough for us and the room was stunning. We paid a bit more for a water view and it didn't disappoint. The bed was comfortable and the bathroom was bigger than my first flat! The only wee thing for us was the shower wasn't great but apart from that we can't fault The Douglas. Food was delicious (ate here 2 of the 4 nights , and breakfast was lovely too. Right beside the ferry terminal too so ideal for anyone like us who don't have a car. We will definitely be back (possibly for our 1st anniversary!

The meal was outstanding; we thoroughly enjoyed it. I felt the great food and overall experience was spoiled by the chap that served us. I asked a simple question about the soup of the day. I was shocked by the attitude of the server. I felt that we were an inconvenience throughout the meal, additional training on customer care and a better understanding of the menu would be required. In contrast to this experience, the wonderful lady who served us in the morning for breakfast. I felt she was passionate about The Douglas Hotel and ensured that we understood the menu and couldn't be more helpful and informative about the menu and The Douglas Hotel. Also, we stayed in the newer part even thoug...

"We were a party of 5, on a cold, very wet Saturday evening, coldest so far I would say! We drew up and saw a young family of 3 sitting with jackets on in the conservatory area, we were a bit concerned! We took a...seat at the back of the conservatory which proved to be a big mistake! There was a terrible draught coming from behind me, I did mention it and was told it was 27c at the middle of the room, but not where we were sitting!! I mentioned it a few times and sat with my shawl scarf on throughout! I pulled down the window blinds hoping that would help, nope!! We ordered our food, I asked about a vegetarian option for my husband, our waitress did say he could a veggie option on the curry and the tempura or risotto, which was helpful! I had to ask what was the soup of the day and also the pate!! I did feel that maybe in this day and age there should have been a small dedicated vegetarian area on the menu, but that’s just my opinion! 3 of our party had starters which were great, Cullen skink, scallops and langoustine tempura, Main courses arrived, 3 fish and chips, one lemon soul and one veggie tempura, all were excellent except for the veggie tempura which was large shards of onion and carrot in an albeit lovely batter, but not all vegetarians like huge chunks of vegetables! 4 of our party had a sticky toffee pudding with vanilla ice cream, which was plentiful! Overall we had a pleasant meal, little or no atmosphere though, one of the younger waitresses (white shirt, black skirt) was friendly and more talkative, the waitress (dressed all in black)who served us was, we all felt a little disinterested and lacked any empathy with the guests! We asked for our bill, the youngest waitress came with the card machine and felt how cold it was only then did she check the windows to find there was one opened, hence the draught, which spoiled our visit because we were felling it cold!! We paid the bill and left a tip on the plate, no one came to say thank you for you custom, or have a nice evening, nothing!! All in all it was pretty inhospitable! Value you for money, it was good for the standard of the food!"
