"Been here quite a few times and always had a great roast, but noticed that the warmest welcome seems to be reserved if your face fits. Had a Clifton crawl and the Lion was one of the venues. Just went for a drink and sat by the fire, which was the warmest place in the bar. The table had cutlery on it and after we'd been there for about 20 mins the bar staff very politely asked if we could move as they had guests arriving in a few minutes to eat. We moved immediately to a larger table away from the lovely warm fireplace, but obviously without issue. Then saw the table placings on the table we were sat on moved to another table and 2 people who seemed well known in the pub were moved onto the table by the fire. 3 people then arrived and sat at that table to eat. Probably nothing intentional just bit of logistical issue. The beer was great and the place is always well presented and clean. Just got the feeling over the last few visits that it is becoming more of a local's club than a general watering hole. Only my opinion obviously and wish them well for the future."

This was the best roast I’ve had in Bristol. They don’t skimp you on anything. It was a proper home style roast with all the good veggies, good gravy, excellent yorkies, and even a great vegan option! The on out downside was Yorkshire puddings only come with the beef… but they were kind enough to bring us some anyway and didn’t even charge us! I left full and satisfied

Small local pub serving roasts on Sundays. 3 of us pitched up on a bank holiday Sunday at 4.30pm asking if the kitchen was still open. They said the next sitting started at 5pm and we were in luck as there had been a cancellation. We sat in the teeny tiny garden while we waited until 5pm then went in for a traditional roast (which is all that is available on Sundays). We were ravenous and were very satisfied with quality and quantity. Service was kind and efficient but do book ahead to avoid disappointment. I don't think this was a drinking pub as all the tables were used for dining.

We so, so love coming to The Lion for a Sunday lunch. It's the best in Bristol by miles. Service is warm, friendly and attentive without being pushy. They make us feel at home, and treat our dog Pablo with kindness and affection every time we visit. The attention to detail and quality of ingredients for each aspect makes it feel truly special. The cauliflower cheese croquette alone deserves an award, but from the beautifully sweet/sour red cabbage to the lovingly-prepared carrots, everything about the meal makes you feel like it's been specially made for you. My wife is vegetarian and normally goes for the pie; I go for the lamb if it's on, or beef if not. We always leave feeling warm and no... View menu

Have just returned from a trip to The Lion for their recommended Sunday lunches. We decided to book for my husband's special birthday, as we have heard plenty of people advising us to go. They were booked up I think we were the last booking and you could see why. The staff were amazingly helpful and polite. We started with a round of drinks and then checked the menu. My husband and I went for the beef, my eldest picked the vegetarian pie and my youngest chose nut roast. The food was brilliant and there was so much of it, so make sure you wear elasticated waists! Everyone was happy...and full. It was cooked perfectly and tasted fantastic. We had heard rumours of a legendary rice pudding, whic...

I had been meaning to have a Sunday roast here for quite sometime, having heard good things and read the reviews!! I have to be brutally honest and say it was the worst roast I have ever had! Every element was shocking, my only regret is that I didn't complain. The staff were so lovely (no complaints there) that I didn't have the heart to say how bad it was! I struggled to even eat any of it! It was completely tasteless, no seasoning apparently they said you have to season it yourself. The roast potatoes and Yorkshire's looked and tasted like Aunt Bessie's! There were 2 breaded balls, with a filling that tasted disgusting (it was some sort of cheesy stodgy mess) they were also luke warm insi...

"Visited here in Sept 23 for an executive dinner that we were hosting for various senior business leaders. We booked out the whole venue, which was the perfect size and atmosphere for the intimate and exclusive feel that we wanted, plus a convenient location. The TV that shows into the kitchen was fascinating, and the record player was put to use towards the end of the evening! Caroline from the venue helped us organise the event in advance and was great to deal with. We were fortunate with the weather so were able to enjoy a welcome drinks reception out the front of the venue, and have the door open all evening to let the balmy night in. We had the 7 course taster menu and it was simply OUTSTANDING so many of our guests commented on how delicious it was, particularly the beef steak course! It was so tasty that I even enjoyed the fish dish (not usual for me! . Service on the night was exemplary, the courses were brought out at just the right intervals so you weren't waiting ages but also not being rushed. The chef came out to greet us after the final course, which was a lovely touch and meant we could thank him. Overall, we had really great feedback from our guests, everyone loved it thank you for making our event such a success! We would definitely book again, and I know a few of our guests have already recommended it to their own companies for executive dinners! Would not hesitate to recommend."
