"We, like other customers, ordered soup at this restaurant and were disappointed to receive a tepid serving. It seemed that the soup had been reheated in a microwave. The accompanying bread was a tiny, disappointing representation of Scottish cuisine - resembling cheap, dry supermarket bread. The soup portion was also small, especially considering the hefty price tag of £8.50. Additionally, the tables were sticky and unclean. Overall, this restaurant seemed like a rip-off, targeting both tourists and locals alike."

This place is supposed to be VERY haunted, even by Edinburgh standards. A plaque by the outside door gives you a brief synopsis of this location's dark and... View menu

Had a great visit to this lovely, traditional pub. The interior is so interesting and in keeping with the fascinating history of the building. Food was excellent, staff were very efficient and friendly. Would definitely return.

Make sure to make a reservation ahead of time because this restaurant is very popular and you may not be able to get a table if you just show up. The food is delicious and the staff is very friendly and accommodating. There aren't many vegetarian options, but the ones they do have are top-notch. I highly recommend this place.

The macaroni was served cold and even though I was offered to have it reheated, by the time it was ready, my friend had finished his main dish. The total bill came to over £40 for two starters, two drinks, and one main dish. We were not offered any discounts or complimentary drinks. I would suggest avoiding this restaurant at all costs. I wish I had read the reviews before walking through the door. View menu

We had dinner here with our tour group. They provided a fixed course meal, and we had fish and chips with a trio of desserts. I’m not sure if this food is also served in the Tavern. The servers were very personable and efficient. We were in a separate area since our group was large, but we had to walk through the tavern to get in and out of the restaurant. The restaurant was packed with locals and other tourists. If they accept reservations, you should book in advance.

I have to say that I am giving a review based on our initial reaction to the pub and not the food. We didn’t stay or venture further than the entrance. The bartender greeted us in a friendly manner when we entered and asked if we wanted a seat. We could not stay because of the overwhelming smell of burnt, greasy fish that had permeated the air. It completely turned us of even staying for a drink. Not sure if this was just a bad day or if it the general odour of the ancient pub, but we declined.
