"This place was the whole package. Food was great. But I'll start with people and place People: The husband and wife owners couldn't have been more charming and helpful. Embracing. Place: It's an intimate place in a 500 year old building in the old part...of town near the cathedral. Twelve tables nested in appealing nooks and crannies. Our table for two opened into the main area through a half-timbered wall. There's a terrace, but we didn't see it. Tables decorated with seasonal flowers. Our table had an artichoke thistle; late sunflowers on the bar. Food: All the food was excellent. But the sauerkraut soup was to die for!!! Have it--even if the weather is hot. Wonderful calves liver Berlin style with apple and onion. Grilled pork loin with subtle mushroom sauce. Wonderful potatoes rösti. Apple tart with calvados, ice cream, and schlag. The owner/chef worked in Paris for 15 years, including at the Ritz. Evening ended with a schnapps made with Riesling grape--Allendorf. Wonderful evening!"

We were in the centre of Mainz, saw the reviews of this restaurant, and called in. In summer, the outside courtyard is delightful. The staff are very pleasant, and the food good. Very relaxed.

We spent one evening in Mainz and accidentally went to this restaurant. We were put in a nice, intimate corner, no one bothered us. Very friendly service with good recommendations. Amazing food. Very tasty broccoli soup and veal. Reasonable price

we chose the restaurant because it was near the hotel, we went back because of the people. eating was very good, generous portions. the people were kind, welcome, chatty, let me babble in german, but answered in english also. when I go to mainz, I go back there.

Seit Jahren besuchen wir die "Kanzel" jetzt schon an jedem 23.12. Wir hatten schon Abende, da saßen wir als einzige Besucher hier. Doch im Laufe der Jahre scheint es sich verändert zu haben. Am 23.12.2016 wurden wir derart unhöflich behandelt, dass wir uns für die Zukunft ein anderes Restaurant suchen werden. Wir wurden gerügt, dass wir nicht in vollständig reservierter Anzahl erschienen sind (Krankheit) und wurden danach derart unwirsch zurechtgewiesen, warum wir keine Vorspeise bestellen, dass es uns die Sprache verschlug. Um den ganzen die Krone aufzusetzen wurden zwei junge Männer an unserem Tisch geparkt (eigentlich kein Problem) und so von der Gastwirtin umschwärmt, dass es ein Schlag...

We spent one night in Mainz rather than stay at Frankfurt Airport during a layover. Zur Kanzel was the highlight! I emailed for a reservation a week or so before and I could tell this would be a great dinner. From the moment we arrived...it we felt like we were at a local relative's house for dinner. The courtyard is lovely and we had a wonderful table. Petra speaks perfect English and helped us choose a great local Riesling. We are normally red wine drinkers and were hesitant to drink white, but weren't disappointed. We ended up purchasing more at the airport duty free.
