"It was my first visit here in a long time (back in my early teens , and my recent visit was to come to have a spot of family lunch. The entrance is spacious, and since I don't recall what it looked like before the refurb, I can say it seems to be a waste of good space in areas. The welcome was great, attentive volunteers (I believe . We were directed to the cafe area. We made our orders and it did take an age to get the food considering the place was very very quiet when we were there. There were two staff waiting on tables and they were not the friendliest when they were not directly serving you. They walked about as if they did not want to be there. One actually looked under the weather with who knows what. Who I can only assume was the manager or supervisor (dressed differently in jeans and a shirt was not particulary friendly and would try his best to not look in your direction if he knew you were trying to get his attention. My food was dry as anything and we did request condiments but the bloke wasn't listening and didn't bring what was requested. I was expecting some chips with my meal if I am honest, with the price charged, but all I got was a dry meal and a bit of salad. I would not go back here. I think it is a good place for kids though (from the human aspect of it, Professor Jiggety? , was a delight to the young ones. Some of the exhibitions in the museum are ...curious to say the least."

"We had a very disappointing experience at the Sportsman during lunch. The food was decent, but the service was appalling. We had made a reservation for 8 people, including 4 adults and 4 young children, at 12pm with the understanding that we needed to be finished by 2pm. At 1:35pm, the waitress reminded us that the table was booked for 2pm. We had already ordered desserts, which were about to be served, so we assured her we would be done by 2. Shortly after, another staff member asked us to move to a different table. We complied, but the new table was not suitable for young children and did not have enough seats for all of us. One of the children had to sit on a lap because there was no high chair available. Throughout this whole ordeal, we received no apology or acknowledgement of our discomfort. Instead, we watched as our old table was cleared and set up for the next customers within minutes, while the new table sat empty for 25 minutes. When a glass was accidentally knocked off the table, the staff didn't even check if everything was okay and just talked amongst themselves. We were shocked and disappointed by the lack of concern for our well-being. We felt like the staff were avoiding us, so we had to approach them for the bill. We refused to pay the service charge due to the inconvenience and lack of apology. Despite our efforts to accommodate the staff's request to move tables, we were made to feel as though we had done something wrong. We will not be returning to the Sportsman and will not recommend it to others. The staff clearly need more training in customer service."

"This had been a review that I have been wanting to write for a while, but never got around to it, but after yesterday’s Sunday lunch I couldn’t forget anymore!! We have been attending the black lion since July when we moved to the village and found out that the local pub had been taken over by new landlords, and what a cracking job they have done so far! I’m a professional chef and been working in top restaurants and gastro pubs for the last 22 years and understand all the aspects of hospitality…and I have to say they made one of the best roast dinners I’ve had in a very long time! All the meats were cooked to perfection, alongside amazing array of veggies and fluffy crispy potatoes! Yorkshire puddings bigger than your fist, perfectly seasoned throughout and a tasty gravy to bring it all together! The landlords should be proud of what themselves and their team for what they have produced. This wasn’t a one time affair either….we have visited 3 times in the last couple months and has equally been as good each time and think we are becoming hooked I can’t speak for the rest of the menu as I haven’t seen it or tasted it, but if it’s as good as the roast, then you will be in for a treat! Brad and Natasha and the team are always very inviting and the atmosphere feels very relaxed, especially when the fires are roaring away! We will definitely be recommending this pub in the future to all our friends and local colleagues, and look forward to seeing this public house grow in the future as it deserves to."

"Catching up with my reviews ate here on 14th September, in my bid to try out the new local places. Very busy restaurant and had to book in advance to try it out, following a takeaway option the week beforehand (which was very average). Extremely modern fresh interior and friendly enough welcome in. Was a noisy night as a live band was playing at the other end of the restaurant. Sat us down at the end of the restaurant in a booth and waited a few minutes before getting waiter back to ask for drinks. Ordered a bottle of wine and soft drinks. 25 minutes later... they appear back.. Not a good start already, given the waitress had taken our food order before the chap came back with 2 soft drinks and a bottle! Mum was the only one to order a starter of minestrone soup as you can see from the photos a tuscan bean soup would be a better description, not a minestrone soup of any shape or form. No one came over to ask how it was either. Mains arrived shortly after and I went for Milanese Chicken with pasta, mum had pasta with spicy sausage and Fi, pasta with prawns. Side order of focaccia bread. Simplest way to describe the food. Bland and tasteless. No seasoning in any of the dishes whatsoever. Pasta was dry and not fresh tasting in the slightest. Worst part the bread. It wasn't cooked and dough was still raw all across the edges and the rock salt... OMG.. Anymore thrown on I'd be in hospital! Not to worry... oh wait, thats right, no one came over again to ask how things were, or even acknowledged you at the table. Didn't eat much, but still opted to try desserts to get a better feel for the place on a review. Sticky Toffee and Tiramisu are always winners they were okay not stand out, but the better out of the 3 courses. Another thing that lets this place down, is the ambience or lack of. It's just so loud in here with the tunnel design and you can't hear yourself or talk without raising your voice. I was quite disappointed with Nonnas Kitchen, given the takeaway the week before wasn't great, but put that down to it being a takeaway. Clearly, things don't improve much eating in food or service wise. Popular down to nothing else is really in Kirky and it's big and modern. Not a winner with me or anyone that expects freshly cooked and lovingly prepared food/service. You Don't Gotta Eat Here... Sadly!"
