"Meeting friends here for Sunday lunch this afternoon, we 've all come away slightly disappointed by our choice. The Black Horse is immaculate, having clearly had a decent budget spent on interior decoration and furnishings, with a cherishing of its connections to nearby Pinewood the walls are festooned with black and white photos of famous film stars and directors who have been past customers. At the same time, the bathrooms are labelled stable boys and stable girls , playing on the obvious coach house traditions from a pub at a crossroads. All very nice, as were the lovely staff who greeted us as we arrived and brought us our food. But that 's where the problem lay. All of the niceties failed to disguise the fact that our food was really very disappointing. Five had opted for the roast beef, all agreeing that the beef was very well done, with rock hard Yorkshire puddings and soggy broccoli. I 'd opted for bangers and mash, to be presented with a small mound of mash, three sausages and a large bowl of peas. The mash was really quite inadequate a portion, certainly in relation to the peas portion. As we were amongst the first of the day (1245 for 1), this disappointing food offer seemed hard to explain there was no rush to handle. We were at least ten minutes into the meal before being asked if all was well some of our party would have complained if we 'd had time to accept a second run at the meal, but we didn 't. So, with a bill of £73 for four adults and three kids, only one kid seemed happy with her meal, while everyone else left a little less than impressed. Definitely, it could have been better."

"My family and I stopped in for lunch after our trip to Incholm Island. Lunch at The Hawes Inn restaurant was the perfect end to our stay in the most beautiful country I have seen in my travels. The meal was absolutely delicious. The wonderful service exceeded our expectations. The food was delicious with wonderful presentation, the atmosphere was welcoming and comfortable with a stunning view of the water. I had the Sea Bass King Prawns. Sadly they were out of prawns but my choice was still delicious. My husband thoroughly enjoyed the fish chips while my son devoured the signature burger. We ended the meal with coffee that was served with the most delicious little piece of heaven on the side (I wish I would have asked what it was), and an absolutely beautiful strawberry meringue dessert."

"We arrived for our booking to be told that there was no booking made under our details at all. They did fortunately have a cancellation that they gave us, otherwise we would have been left with no where to eat on new years eve! The waitress plonked our bottle of wine down on the table, didn't even open it, let alone pour it. The food was outstanding apart from the mashed potato which was definitely powdered."

"Two minutes from Kentish Town station is the new branch of Joe’s Southern Kitchen Bar. Having walked past its Covent Garden branch, I always made a mental note to visit it. But as the London food scene keeps on expanding, so does my list of restaurants/cafes/popups to visit To celebrate the opening of Joe’s in Kentish Town and to showcase Executive Chef Trevor Tobin (Steam Rye, The Big Easy and Goodman) and his team’s culinary finesse in the kitchen, we were invited down for the press night. Whilst we had a large corner table, the place was quite busy for 6:30PM in the evening as it was also open to the general public. Hence, you can tell whether the restaurant is genuinely...read more"

"We visited The Lodge for Mother's Day lunch, after having booked. The meal itself was enjoyable with good quality dishes (we all had the roast, mix of beef and lamb really good joints! , well presented and which we thought were all value for money. How ever, we felt the service was somewhat lacking we had to ask for menus after a while, drinks order taken for only half the table then rushed off before asking the rest, had to ask for table water couple of times, etc. I appreciate that it might have been unusually busy for a Sunday given it was Mother's Day but I'm always a bit surprised when restaurants seem caught off guard by this, especially when they have a special menu in place."

"We walked in and was made to feel as welcome as a fart in a space suit from a guy dressed like he'd just been on stage with The Happy Monday's he barked at us the took us to a table. The food arrived and it had coloured chips well one was green. On leaving payed by card and it didn't go through, we sat and finished our drinks we where about to leave when a waitress rushed over shouting. You can't leave you've not paid. As the whole pub looked at us. The PDQ machine wasn't working properly so we paid and left with no thanks.... we will not be returning and we only live in Pocklington."

"Hi, We went there after a long walk in Glennifer Braes. We were all ready for our lunch. The Inn had been recommended as a place to have fiss. h finger burgers... all those who had it said it lived up to its reputation. The mushroom toastada was lovely and presented well. THe genral decor was themed around the highland cows... which made interesting talking point. I would recommend it as the staff were willing to go that slightly extra mile to accommodate dietry needs request. Definitely recommend it. "Sunday lunch with my girlfriend and foodie Daughter, having booked on Saturday evening, and being accommodated for lunch the next day was very much appreciated, thank you for that, my Daughters choice of roast would always be lamb and it’s so nice to see it on a menu nowadays and especially here and to be fair it was cooked to perfection as I also had it, the whole meal was cooked the same way, lovely nice choice of fresh vegetables and the best roast potatoes I have ever had outside of home, now that’s how you judge a roast dinner, am I not right readers? the food was outstanding, my girlfriend had the chicken and by the look of her plate, obviously enjoyed it and she doesn’t really like a roast, says it all, if it is cooked with love, it clearly shows on the plate, big thanks to all the kitchen staff my only criticism and the reason I didn’t give it a 5 was just down to a couple of younger members of serving staff, smile and look like you enjoy what your doing, even if your not, it doesn’t cost anything, a total opposite to the nice lady that greeted us on arrival, would I recommend it, ABSOLUTELY, will I be back? I wouldn’t go anywhere else in and around here for Sunday lunch."

"Thanks for your reply, it's shows you care, not sure why my friend tip for service when it was not outstanding or even that good , I would of made you aware at time of paying if I was pay the bill. My friend is one who don't like to complain and make a fuss. I did not wish to say anything at the time as our friend's had book the table and I did not wish to cause any embarrassment to them, As you know I contacted you as soon as I got home to make you aware how disappointing I was. I look at other review and there seems to be many happy experiences. Good luck and thanks for your reply. Let's hope you get better reviews. I have contacted the manager and made him aware of my disappointment . The four of us feedback about our meals. Started not great, squid . It was to cold there . Long wait for our food to come . Pizzas one was cold and other warms Gamon steak not that good could not eat it all. Pudding ok. Would not go there again. Even when the manager has offer a discount next time we visit the pub. Harvey's bitter good. Staff better training as could be far better not worth tipping . No Wow factor at The Crow and Gate."

"We were really disappointed with the food nothing like it was previously. Pretty mediocre lots of dishes in total) not available on Saturday night. Food was very basic and presentation dated. The meat was however well cooked. The focus on game now...replaced with a middle of the road menu but at high end prices. Wine very over priced and overall nothing in this experience was anything but average apart from the service that was attentive and professional. We had the blood orange salad which was ok but the duck rillett tasteless served with a chunk of bread and over powering chutney. The lamb and venison was well cooked but the vegetables disappointing. The chocolate fondent pistachio ice cream came almost completely melted. The English cheese board was pretty uninspired At for we won’t be returning"

"Very nice Seafood platter, burger was OK and pie was pretty good so all in all food was tasty, good quality and reasonably priced. Service was OK, bit awkward with the one bar person, but the younger members of the service team were great. It was a very traditional pub and was what you would expect, the ladies loos had very nice toiletries and smelt great too. I was told by my wife Price per person: £60–70 Food: 4 Service: 3 Atmosphere: 3 Recommended dishes: Pie of the Day Steak and Ale"

"Well this place is a little gem pope's in once for some food and returned twice a week ever since, the food is outstanding all locally sourced and they use products from their own farm ie lamb ect. The staff are extremely friendly and helpful the interior is extremely clean and is now mine and my wifes favourite place to dine out. I would highly highly recommend the bird in hand to anyone looking for a place to visit. Service: Dine in"

"I took my very elderly mum and uncle out for lunch at a bustling pub, and we received a warm welcome despite the crowd. Zoe and all the staff were delightful. The Sunday roasts were excellent—this is a genuine pub experience, not a gastro pub, with real food and a lovely atmosphere. I highly recommend it! "Got stuck at the airport overnight on our way back to the States. We were put up close at a hotel so we searched for local pubs. The White Horse had good reviews. Watch your head! You walk down a couple of stairs and need to duck to get into the pub. It was great! Great service, friendly patrons, quaint and it had plenty of locals to talk to. I give the food a 5, because we went there for the ambience and drinks. Not for the food. The good food was a bonus. If we had gone out for food, I would rate it a 4. We had the dirty chips, beef stew, lasagna Verdi and spicy squid. The chips could have been covered more with the toppings. The spicy fried squid was good. The lasagna could have used more seasonings. The beef stew was perfect. So, no complaints. If you choose to smoke, there's an outdoor area that is covered where you can eat, drink and enjoy your tobacco. The bathrooms were extremely clean. You can tell that the whole crew at this place cares about customer satisfaction. And they will do their best to take care of you. Great experience!"

"We visited on Saturday night and must say that our waitress, Danielle, was absolutely fantastic. She went above and beyond for my partner and me. We ordered the chicken burger and the fillet steak, along with the mini crumble and mini brownie for dessert. We're looking forward to coming back and hope Danielle will be there to take care of us again when we return! We felt quite sorry for her, though, as she seemed to have a difficult table causing all sorts of issues. Price per person: £20–30."

"Eggs Benedict? NOT! So, I hate leaving low rating reviews. But there are times when it 's necessary. This morning I met a friend at the Chalet. I ordered Eggs Benedict. Now, in my 65 years, I 've ordered this as a breakfast choice all over the world. It 's usually always the same for standard benedict....poached eggs, atop Canadian bacon, on an english muffin, with Hollandaise sauce. What did I get at Chalet? 2 over easy eggs on top of deli sliced ham; yes there was an english muffin, but the Hollandaise sauce barely covered the eggs. Without a doubt the worst Eggs Benedict I 've ever had."

"Excellent place with cosy country pub vibe. We're regulars here these days as you can rely on good wine and excellent food (the schnitzel and fish n chips are to die for). The staff are really friendly and the service is great. If you can get a seat beside the log fire that really adds to a cosy night. Definitely recommend. We've also booked for Christmas day as last year was great! Dietary restrictions: Veggie options are lovely Food: 5"

"visited on a Sunday lunch time and it was very quiet with only 3 other tables occupied when we arrived. first, the eating out of the way that this was ok with the only annoying bit that they did not get the 2 items we ordered at the same time, 1 pizza and 1 part of the tattoo (this came almost 5 minutes after the pizza) and we noticed this with a different table than. there were 2 young in the kitchen area, one of which seemed not to be disturbed to actually work when there were accusations and more concerned to get yourself and others a coffee and to have a chat and sort his hair, did not see him wash his hands before he went back in the kitchen after his hair. there was a front of the houseman who was more interested in his phone and played with the knife sharper. it looked as if the manager entered the kitchen to help with the commands, but it seemed that he only cooked his own lunch, so we didn't disturb him about what we saw.! I will say that the other front of the housemaid (blondes hair, shirt dressed up), the guy behind the bar and the other kitchen man were all good."
