"My husband and I celebrated our wedding anniversary at 1861 for the first time. It was a beautiful Good Friday! I was expecting the restaurant to be bustling since we had a reserved table at 12:30, but it was surprisingly quiet – almost too quiet for my liking. The restaurant is known for being special, and it's clear why with Chef Simon's credentials. The food was superb with unique and flavorful dishes. The wine list was also excellent. We will definitely be back, although I believe my older husband enjoyed it more than I did. It's not the type of place you'd visit frequently, but rather season by season. The service provided by the Chef's wife was exceptional. Overall, I found the experience a bit perplexing, and I can't quite pinpoint why."

Absolute gem of a restaurant run by husband (chef) and wife team.

The restaurant is located in a tranquil countryside setting and the owners are very attentive. I would definitely come back again.

on a day to birthday with friends. the meal was excellent and the service also. it is on the land side, so that it is beautiful. I would definitely go 1861 for a place for a meal it is expensive, but it is worth it. they are very welcome.

1861 Restaurant Abergavenny. This is an excellent Restaurant in a fairly remote location that probably suffers at times with lack of Clientele which may stop it getting the Michelin award that it should receive in 2012 if it maintains this standard.

The food was really good, specially the deserts we have chosen a degustation plate with 5 mini desserts to share and was wonderful. I didn't rate the food as outstanding because I didn't like it too much the first dish that I choose (the venison), but the restaurant has 2 rosettes, and the rest of the food was really good.

Unfortunately we were the only persons in the restaurant for most of our visit. The waitress was a little severe in her method of service and we sensed we needed to leave before we prefered. The food was acceptable but very expensive for the type of restaurant it is advertising. I realise it’s always a problem when you are the only party eating.

1861 is a great restaurant. it is located in a quiet landscape near monmouth and abergavenny. it is family business so very friendly and there is a great love to detail that they are not elsewhere. eating and service is amazing, can literally not blame anything. it is for a higher budget, but absolutely worth the extra! it is really covid sure that brings all in rest and is really one of the best restaurants in this part of wales.

This restaurant is exceptional. We received a warm welcome and enjoyed a pre-dinner drink with delightful homemade snacks in a cozy bar. We had plenty of time to choose from a very appealing menu. The atmosphere in the restaurant was very calming. The food was incredible, creatively and skillfully prepared. The ingredients were sourced ethically and often locally. The vegetables, grown in their own garden, were delicious. The Welsh lamb, sourced from a local farm, was fantastic. The sharing plate of beautifully crafted desserts was delightful. The coffee was served with delicious petit fours. We had a wonderful evening and could not find any faults with this restaurant, which we highly recom...
