"I refer to review headed absolutely dreadful what a load of rubbish I was in the brown cow that evening and witnessed from start to end the party were rude and demanding, only waited about 45 minutes from ordering which I thought was perfectly acceptable has the pub was very busy. The ate all there food has the stated because they were hungry if it was that bad I wouldn’t have eaten it but I guess you get people like these that think it ok to eat a meal and then refuse to pay and that is what happened flatly refused to pay for food (there was no lengthy discussion just flatly refused . I live about 40 miles away from the brown cow and visit probably once a month when visiting my elderly mother and over the years seen change of hands but the family that run it now is the best it’s ever been lovely imaginative food, well kept beer and lovely staff and are also when the can giving the place a makeover but it all takes time. So please ignore these negative reviews from people that don’t get their own way and pay a visit you will not be disappointed . The people who sent in that review say never again will they set foot in the place with customers like that I imagine brown cow will be happy no one needs customers like that"

Booked the cottage next door, number 2 nook cottage. Lovely cosy, clean and comfortable. Great pub next door The Brown Cow. The food is lovely, the bar is friendly and welcoming. Because of the current situation with Covid you have to book, but worth it. View menu

Visited in JULY 2020 after a long day walking. Brilliant varied menu tons of choice. We had burgers and a chicken dinner special followed by cheesecake, all delicious. Plenty drinks on offer. Excellent service throughout. Nice atmosphere and reasonable price

My wife and I visited Thursday lunchtime with another couple. Quiet initially but got busier later. I ha gammon with all the usual trimmings and it was probably the largest I have ever eaten. And it was tender and succulent. My companions had fish and chips which were also mansized. Nobody could manage desert! Will definitely visit again.

We visit the Brown Cow for tea quite regularly when we are passing and have also made the 22mile round trip from home because of the atmosphere and the quality of the food. This is a typical Cumbrian village pub, very popular with the locals and where you always get a very warm welcome from the staff and anyone else who is there. There is a garden area for hot weather and through the winter months a lovely log fire keeps everything toasty warm. They serve a good range of items from the menu and the specials board is always worth a look. I can recommend the local Cumberland Sausage, butchers burgers, the crispy chilli beef and definitely the sticky toffee pudding. So if you are ever passing t... View menu

I stopped at the Brown Cow with my Mum for a bite to eat at lunch time during the week. I was spoilt for choice and the chef, a very pleasant and knowledgeable young man, recommended the Crispy Chilli Beef for me, Mum opted for the Sweet Chilli Chicken both were on the Specials Menu. We ordered drinks while we waited and chatted to the Landlord who was a friendly and extremely pleasant young man. We didn't have to wait too long before we were served with our meals. Both were served on a bed of rice with a side dish of prawn crackers a nice touch. Absolutely delicious is all I can say! I have never tasted crispy beef quite like it and I cleared my plate. Mum looked to be struggling, or so I t...

Walked in and asked for a table with the family large group of us. There was availability and we asked to order food which we were told would be a 30 minute wait. We asked the waitress if she could please double check with the chef the wait time as we had three small children with us she did and confirmed 30 minutes. We ordered our food 3 sausage and mash (adult) 2 sausage and mash children’s meal, 1 chicken nuggets meal for kids and a gammon adults meal. It took 1hr20 minutes before we got any food. Incorrect items on plate, no red wine gravy (Bisto job) no mustard mash tasted like Packet mash and three hungry tired children. No apology and we had to fight for a discount which after a very...
