"So having spent the day at Garmisch we called in at Mittenwald for a quick look around and a bite to eat. Having walked up and down the main street and completed our retail therapy we were not over enthused by the menu's on offer....After 6 days of Austrian/Germanic cuisine my wife was looking for a change and something simple. Egg chips was her inkling and after finding our way to the carved statue of a violin appearing out of a tree trunk we thought we had found her desire at the Gasthof Gries. When we had eventually obtained a menu in English there on the first page was three eggs and potatoes. That was her sorted or so we thought. The service was not outstanding and their ability to converse in English was as poor as our effort to converse in German (both my wife and I did French all those years ago). Anyway it transpired that the menu we were using was old and they no longer offered the dish that my wife wanted. Since we already had drinks in front of us we decided on Holzfallersteak and the universal Wiener Schnitzel. It took a very long time to arrive and in fact it had gone dark outside by the time it arrived and we were both hungry enough to eat a scabby horse. So they have about 15 bench tables outside and on a warm evening it is very pleasant. Also inside looked warm and inviting and so this is also an option. We found the service to be indifferent towards us (and we were not the only table trying to attract the waitresses attention) but the food was good, tasty, plentiful and very reasonably priced. We didn't stay for desert (probably would have arrived with the coffee and buns of breakfast) as we had some Ice cream at the apartment with our name on it. Oh and they only take payment in cash and so ensure you have enough for your meal as credit cards are not an option."

Good food, nice Bavarian atmosphere, good service all at a reasonable price. Our hotel recommended and they were right.

View menu

we stopped ordering them imperially before our trip to the house, and we were very glad that we did it: my friend went so far that it was the best imperial marrn he had ever tasted! the view is beautiful and the local beer is served here. I would also recommend the spinach dumplings that were very good.

we enjoyed our lunch here, we found the waitress to be helpful. menu was traditional Bavarian cuisine. we had a beef-plant soup with crunch, which were quite averaged by the aromen, then we had served the carving that was pretty. the Bavarian style sauteed kartoffeln with speck. they were delicious (bread potatoes) note that credit cards are not accepted here. recommended

we visited this restaurant tonight and had a wonderful time. our waitress was friendly, efficient and welcoming. we enjoyed the cordon bleu schnitzel and the pork filet medaillen, and both meals were excellent. the meal served other guests while we saw there. a man on the table next to us ordered crispy black bone and it saw a complete contrast to what we had recently eaten in the alpenrose on Saturday last. the flesh was tender, fell from the bone and he looked really happy. in this week we will visit the gasthof gries again.

"we visited the market restaurant for the first time and tried to eat here every later visit. we were not always successful because we were not sufficiently reserved in advance. I have reserved for our lunch today, and it would seem that lunch is a little easier to get a reservation. when we entered into us, we spent our entire walk in our apartment and talked about every single court we had in our four-course lunch. everyone was spectacular. the chef combines ingredients, aromas, textures and even article temperatures in a way that I had rarely experienced. my wife and I live in the san francisco bay area, and there are several restaurants that are listed michelin, and some that have stars. none of our local places are these innovative when it comes to bringing together courts. during our current visit, we decided again for the four-course lunch. the small starter who came before these four curses was remarkably tasty and playful in his presentation. it was another example for the clever use of contrasting textures and aromen in the construction of aligned. from the four curses that followed, the cortex tars was our favorite, and a beautiful representation of what I say. I had bark tars in many restaurants and in several countries. I never had one that was as vague as the one in the market restaurant. Sometimes you hear a combination, say for example ahi tartare and shaved white chocolate, and you could say that this would never work, but you would be wrong. this court I had in paris was an eye opener. the tartaric acid on the market has a similar character. the bark was in a “cloth” based on buttermilk, and the mild killing of buttermilk was irritable with the bark. it had a senfeis upstairs! how could that work? we loved it. there was a crispy mustard crumb. on the side of the bark were small amounts of liquid lemon cured. there were so many things that went before themselves in a court, and if there are so many things, you fear that they will not intercept. that was not the case here. I thought it was just brilliant. we also enjoyed our other courses very much. everyone had similar clever and delicious elements. we had a wonderful lunch. I will say if they are on a budget and travel with the family, this cannot be the best for them. I don't eat like that every day. if they are looking for an extravagant, exquisite meal that will be the culinary highlight of their visit, then they will go to the market restaurant. my wife and I often eat out, and among the highly valued restaurants closer to home is a michelin three-star restaurant that we dine. if I would compare market restaurant with this restaurant, I would rather only have a meal in the market restaurant than ten meals in the three-star restaurant, and that would be true if they were all paid by someone. the service is professional, but unpretentious, attentive, but not intrusive. the courts are innovate, but work. it's just a great culinary experience. next time we visit the middle of the forest, we will be sure to visit the restaurant again. our meals were simply amazing. I hope they can try the restaurant and enjoy it as much as we do. it's a bit pampered, but I don't know a place in the san francisco bay area I'm excited about."
