"Like some others seem to have found, the host here was extremely rude. I speak French, and after asking if I could seat myself and his agreement, the menu of the day was brought for me to peruse. When he came back to take my order, I enquired as to whether the main of the day, stuffed tomatoes, was vegetarian. I was promptly told no, of course not, and that the restaurant had no vegetarian meals (both entree menu options appeared to be vegetarian), and that nowhere in Angouleme would either. I politely enquired what the tomatoes were stuffed with, as I do sometimes eat a little fish. As they were stuffed with sausage, I politely declined, thanked the host, and was gathering my things to leave. The host told me I would need to find a vegetarian restaurant. I responded that one dish would be sufficient. The French (locals?) at the adjoining tables all seemed to be listening in shock. I myself walked away shocked. I have both lived and travelled in France, and have always told people from elsewhere that the French reputation for being rude is unfounded, however if this was one's first impression of France, it would stick!"

I'd love to review the food, but the host was such a horrible man, that we left. I don't need that kind of attitude.

The food here was pleasant but the place and many of the people eating were rather up themselves. I wouldn't eat here again even though I enjoyed the food. View menu

We ate in the courtyard under the shadow of the church of St André. Menus and drinks list on blackboards brought to the table. We opted for the menu de jour: "Tapas à notre façon" included bruschetta, smoked salmon on dressed puy lentils and a roulade of (more) smoked salmon with vegetables; then perfectly cooked brochettes de boeuf with a tian of vegetables; and a really good rhubarb and almond tart. All with a pichet of perfectly acceptable rosé. Just what you want to complement an exploration of this engaging city.

Agnes Loll knows food, knows how to cook. With her husband Jacques the two run this extremely charming restaurant which is known by locals as being one of the best in Angouleme. While the base menu is clearly French, Agnes and Jacques have clearly travelled and know and enjoy adding herbs/spices to their menu. Although I am no chef, Agnes' knowledge of ingredients is by far one of the best I've known, and her dosage of balanced tastes makes eating here a phenomenal treat. I definitely recommend coming here with a client, love-interest, family group, or friends.

We were spending the night in the old city area. We had no reservations, and decided to walk around to find a place for dinner. We were seated immediately. The restaurant was in a cosy house with two rooms for seating. The dining area was rustic and nice with interesting older movie posters and jazz festival water colors on the wall. The menu was more seafood focused, but there were duck and beef options as well. We had right sized portions and prices were reasonable. The wine list had 25-30 selections, mainly from the surrounding Bordeaux region, but there were others from Provence and the Loire Valley as well. All were reasonably priced. The owner steered us towards a fantastic St. Emilion... View menu

Although the last day of July, the weather in Angouleme was a little wet, so it wasn't a day to have lunch "dans l'exterior'. We were drawn in by the cosy interior and the set lunch which was 16.50 euros had cod as the main course. (I don't eat meat so I usually miss out on set lunch deal as they tend to be meaty). The set lunch was 3 courses excluding wine or coffee. We started with tasty mussels in a cream sauce. The main course was cod in a parsley (?) sauce with rice and a medley of vegetables...the flavours weren't distinctive or exciting on the palette ...the 'pudding' was a delicious lemon pannacotte , served with an almond biscuit.... by the friendly female cook .This was the highlig...

Don't be put off by the review elsewhere that talks about the grumpy host. The place and the patron both have character. We managed to find a table without having a reservation at about 8pm on a Saturday evening but we were lucky - a succession of other people came in later and were turned away. It is obviously a popular place and it's easy to understand why."No frites, no children's menu, no entrée without a plat/main course" - no problem. It is a very straightforward but quirkily French place, with low-key jazz music and decor in keeping with that. We might not have struck up a life-long friendship with the patron but he was definitely an entertaining character and never unpleasant. The fo...

"I had not intended eating out as I had had a decent and large picnic. It was the weekend of the Circuit des Remparts so every where was packed. The 'Bistroc' was equally busy but I saw rognons de veau on the menu ('Carte') so I asked if they could serve me. They said there would be a long delay but I could sit at the bar and have a drink if I didn't mind waiting. As I had time on my hands I was quite content to sit with a beer reading a book. Eventually after half an hour i was approached by one of the two (I presume ) owners and asked if I had ordered. I said not and he proclaimed himself 'desolee' taking my order. 10 or 15 minutes later I was presented with a magnificent steak - I think a cote de beouf - which I would have readily tucked into. Sadly not what I had ordered. More apologies and eventually the rognons de veau arrived. Nicely cooked, no sauce but good 'frites' and salad. I completed the meal with cafe gourmand, not spectacular but perfectly acceptable. When the bill arived they did not charge me for either my beer or the wine with my meal - quite unnecessary but hey insisted. This place is an old fashioned grill with great atmosphere - aided or hindered by two children of one or both of the patron(ne)s who raced around the place chasing each other and flirting with custommers. High quality food unpretentiously cooked. although I concede not cheap.Despite being rushed off their feet the two front of house staff I assume, the owners made every possible effort to make the cusommmers welcome.A very enjoyable evening."
