"I had a very disappointing experience at The Old Ship. I had booked a table online for 12:30 until 2:15 for a work lunch, to accommodate colleagues from other offices. However, the restaurant changed the reservation to only until 1:30, although this information was stated in the confirmation email (which I did not thoroughly read due to the subject line). No one contacted me to discuss the change, and we were abruptly asked to leave the table at 1:30 while we were still eating and drinking. Chaos ensued as we tried to pay while standing and the table was quickly reset for new guests. Two of my colleagues arrived at 1:15 and were also asked to leave before they could finish their meals. While the food was excellent, the customer service was lacking and my complaint email went unanswered."

Small restaurant close to a big theatre. It looked a little grotty, but turned out to be perfectly. Good seafood and excellent crumble for dessert.

I held my birthday celebration at this restaurant. The staff was incredibly helpful and friendly. The food was delicious and all my guests had a great time.

Pretty surprised by this little pub hidden in Hackney. The style is pretty British and full of local people and foreigners coming from the hotel in the upper part of the building. Also the food was a little surprise in line with Nando’s if we want to compare.

I came to the Old Ship for a few beers and overall I was impressed with the pub. The interior was nice in the pub and there was a good range of beers and other drinks. Prices were very reasonable considering how nice the interior was . The pub is located near to Hackney Central station and accepts Amex. View menu

Went in on Saturday early evening for a quick drink and some nosh. Excellent menu, the Spicy Black Bean Burger was terrific. Friendly staff. Great atmosphere, and a good choice of music. Just a pity Boris and his Project Fear cronies have scared most people away. Come on people, support these places or they will disappear.

Lovely to find this place just before we went for a blues jam nearby. Very small entrance but attractive so it got our attention and we glad we wandered in as the pub is big inside! Had lovely mango chicken and avocado chicken salad, deep fried squid and fried chicken wings. Lovely place and would like to come back again for the amazing looking burger!

The outside of the pub undersells the inside. Bright and rustic and well laid out. Had the whole chicken which was half price on Monday. Juicy all the way through and highly recommend the Dalston sauce, serious heat and spicy. Even my partner liked the sauce and she does not normally like hot sauce. She had the vegetarian Beetroot burger and loved . I tried it it was good and very well seasoned. All in all, for my first time I will be back. View menu

What a con. Offered 20% discount on food and drink so we decided to eat and drink there even though we didn’t intend to. Never got the 20% discount and in fact ended up getting significantly over charged for a bottle of wine too. Have emailed property several times no response apart from one phone call with no message left and just the phone slammed down. Extremely poor customer services and fraudulent activity making guests eat in their establishment. A complete rip off and a con.

Sian and her team took wonderful care of our family, including our two young children. We arrived at 12:15 and there was plenty of room for strollers, which was great. The restaurant is very kid-friendly and they had a great selection of local beers. As a fan of cask ales, I was pleased to see they had two options from Redemption and one from 5 Points. The burgers and salads were delicious (although I would recommend skipping the guacamole). This is now our go-to spot for dining out with kids. Thank you, Sian!

"A friend and I stumbled on to this neighbourhood restaurant by chance; no research, no booking, no expectations. We were then blown away by the quality of the food: wonderfully fresh fish, beautifully cooked. The service is also exemplary. I've always enjoyed calamari, but this was by far the best I've ever had: truly succulent and juicy. The mussels were almost as good, and the sea bream kept up the standard. The spiced quince with ice cream made a nice change from baclava in a Turkish restaurant (they still threw in some baclava). The owner, Tony, provides excellent recommendations — make sure you take them! He knows what's fresh that morning, and how his wife cooks it. The bill comes hand-written, and Tony forgot to include the wine (obviously I corrected him). I can't remember the last time a restaurant bill made a mistake in the customers' favour! No service charge is included, and it deserves a lot more than the usual 12.5%. This is a wonderful, old-fashioned restaurant, run by a charming old couple, committed to maintaining old-fashioned standards. The food is more than great and the prices more than reasonable. Service is personal, honest and responsive (providing Tony turns his hearing aid on). Tony warns you if anything you wanted was bought in, rather than home-made. Why don't unassuming but wonderful restaurants like this get Michelin stars?"
