"Let’s start with the positives… Phoned ahead to book at very short notice on a Saturday night and were sat down within the hour at a nice window seat. Welcome was friendly and we were offered drinks immediately. So far so good. Menu was ‘pub grub’ as expected what with it being a pub! And on another positive note, the prices were very reasonable, significantly cheaper than other pubs in the area. Onto the food… my wife had fish and chips and to be fair this was good quality. I had the chickpea and sweet potato curry which just a bit ‘meh’. It came with a poppadom and a mountain of rice. There was nothing wrong with it, just pretty uninspiring. We were approached a couple of times by staff to ask how the food was, and we responded accurately that it was ‘fine’. It was a little unsettling, to have (I assume) the owner/ manager approach to ask a) what we were eating and b) was it any good. The (assumed) owner and wife/co manager then sat on the table next to ours and ate their dinner, which, judging by their comments seemed a test of what the chef was sending out. I’m not sure why they would think it appropriate to test out food/ menus right next to paying customers, and it made the experience just a little more awkward. Another bugbear is the passive aggressive sign at the bar about making sure you know what you want to order before coming up to the bar. I understand that it’s a bit of a joke and meant in good spirit but its’s a little off putting. Ok for the locals, but if I didn’t know the area, it would probably make me walk straight out again. If you want a drink and a quick meal, then The Stag’s a good option. Anything beyond that, maybe consider somewhere else."

All 14 of us arrived after first booking to be greeted like we were royalty. The reception was first class and our tables were ready waiting for us. If you are a large party I would certainly recommend this beautiful pub. We had Sunday lunch which again was excellent, promptly served, delicious and nothing was any trouble for the staff. Overall an excellent experience. Well done.

Stayed here for my husbands birthday. We were greeted with warm and friendly staff, our room was clean, warm and a good size. Excellent shower pressure considering it being such a old building! We booked and had our evening meal and it was amazing, good quality produce, large portions and a good price! Breakfast was very good again very good quality produce. Would highly recommend and would stay and eat again. View menu

I ordered the lamb curry special, while my dad tried the famous steak and ale pie. My dad claims it is one of the best pies he has ever had! The curry was also delicious. The staff was very friendly and it was great to see many locals dining here, which is always a good sign. They have a good selection of beers and the prices are very reasonable. If you are looking for a great British pub meal, you won't find much better than this. This is definitely the top food option in Dunster!

I had stayed at the Stag's Head before and liked it very much. This stay was even better. The new management were so friendly and accommodating and that was hugely helpful for me, as I'm a faddy eater! It was not a problem for them. The room was cosy, yet still had a little en-suite with shower. The sheets were divine, the food was lovely and it was nice to have bottles of spring water in the room as it was pretty hot weather. But, for me, it was the friendly managers and staff that made it all the more enjoyable. Definitely going back! Date of stay: June 2022

"Yet again we needed to celebrate having resolved a long standing technical problem. The pub in Brompton Regis came up in discussion the evening before when our neighbour was around for a glass of wine. He said that before coming to our village he’d looked at houses in Brompton Regis. He left and we booked a table. Friday was a damp day but we were not deterred as we drove up into the Brendon Hills, usually distant views greet one but this day the clouds were dominant. However as we descended from Roborough Gate towards Wimbleball Lake we could turn off the wipers. By the time we crossed the bridge at the top of the lake a shaft of sun broke through and sparkled across the surface of the water whilst light wisps of mist kissed the shore line. Rounding the churchyard wall always raises our expectations for there is the George Inn. The bar door was hardly open before Tash, a beaming smile, greeted us with a price board for ‘COFFEE’. I said in my previous review that I wouldn’t mention coffee at the George again, sorry, but I must. The coffee machine had arrived the day before. Well done Tripadvisor the George! We had a wonderful starter of Baba Ganoush, new to the menu that day. It was exceptionally good with delicate flavour. Following on was chicken breast and pasta with tomato sauce, again great flavour though my wife found it a little too greasy. My Bengal curry was fantastic and a most generous serving. Our ‘Desert,’sic, was Chocolate Ganache with pistachio ice cream under crunched nuts. I had the steamed maple syrup pudding set in a delicious whisky sauce, a very delicate and light texture, just right to finish on after the curry! Of course we had our long awaited espressos from the new device, a delicious finale to our meal. Earlier in walkers had dropped in wanting a coffee. Now all on Exmoor should be heading to the George for their ‘hit’."
