"Having planned to spend this mid week morning at the nearby Dyrham Park we had reserved a table here for lunch. We were both hungry after a good 2 hours walk around the Park’s gardens. This small café restaurant is right on the A46 between Bath and the M4 at Junction 18. The views towards East Bristol are expansive, and it was a beautifully clear day. This was our first visit to an eatery in 2022. It was also well overdue for this restaurant; as it is located on the main A46 route to the M4 from both Bath and East Bristol. Both my partner and I have driven past this place hundreds of times, having lived in the area, in my case, for most of the last 40 years. Today our table was reserved for 13:30 and we arrived a good 15 minutes early (not a problem and had a short wait whilst our table was cleared and cleaned from the previous occupants. We studied the menu and both decided on a ‘Berry Go Round’ smoothie and then the beef burger. Sadly, the smoothies were ‘off the menu’, but the burgers were thankfully not. My partner opted for no burger bun, whereas I had the ‘full fat’ version. Our coffee and non alcoholic drinks were soon served the coffee was good and strong, and my sparkling rhubarb and apple water was excellent. The burgers arrived after a reassuring wait (thus indicating that they had been cooked to order . The burgers were served hot with raw and caramelized onions, leaves and tomatoes plus 3 good crisp onion rings. The brioche bun I enjoyed allowed me to eat from my hand whereas my partner had to use cutlery. We both agreed that we have rarely had a more moist, tender and tasty burger: it was fabulous. Slightly pink and so juicy, and the chips were good too. It is unusual for me to order a burger, but today it just appealed (maybe my sixth sense told me? Service was excellent and charming. The conservatory was a bit cold, but we were suitably dressed and warm from our walk, so that didn’t affect us. This is a very pleasant eatery; maybe ‘pleasantly quirky’ but much to be enjoyed. We will be back and it will be difficult not to have another of those wonderful burgers!"

Waited 45 minutes for our food, jacket potato had hardly any filling. Toasted sandwiches were ok but could have been cooked a bit longer. Was cold inside. Staff friendly.

Worst experience I have ever had. Wanted coffe told we would have to be quick. Then waited ages to be served. By the most aggressive women. Dirty overcrowded. Won’t be back.

We booked for breakfast and so glad I did as it was very busy and most tables were reserved. We were in the original toll gate section so it was warm and cosy. Lovely breakfast, good choice and will call again.

Lovely breakfast with really good ingredients. The sausages and bacon were of the highest quality. Service was very friendly. My only, tiniest of niggles was that the conservatory was a little ‘fresh’ and needed another heater to feel homely.

This is hands down the best hotel experience I've had in years. Saran, the receptionist, greeted me with a warm smile and promptly answered all of my questions. The room was cozy and had all the amenities I could ask for. I will definitely be staying here again.

We stumbled upon this hidden gem on our way back from a weekend trip to Bath and were pleasantly surprised. The afternoon tea was absolutely delicious, featuring savory beef and horseradish finger sandwiches, fruity scones with jam and clotted cream, and a delightful homemade cake. We left feeling satisfied and prepared for our journey home. The service was wonderful, the food was exquisite, and the view was breathtaking. We highly recommend this place!

Wow what a beautiful place. The bedroom was perfect, warm and cozy, had a fridge and a good selection of tea, coffee and hot chocolate. The bed and pillows where so comfortable I fell fast asleep! The how’re was just right and kept in feel with the old farm house vibe. The staff where so warm and friendly. The boss even getting up early to make me breakfast before I started work. What more can you ask for in customer service. I’d highly recommend. As the whole place has a great vibe to it. If definately stay again x

I have frequented the Tollgate restaurant multiple times and have always had a positive experience. However, today after a visit to Bath hospital, my wife and I decided to treat ourselves at the Tollgate, only to be turned away at the door by a waitress who informed us that they were now closed. This was despite open signs being displayed and the website advertising opening hours until 4pm. In the current climate of businesses recovering, is it acceptable to turn away potential afternoon tea business worth £20 to £30 just 20 minutes before the advertised closing time? Not to mention the lost revenue from us not returning and from us informing family and friends not to visit unless it is at l...

Visited the Tolgate today for breakfast after a few days break away in nearby Bradford in Avon. We’ve driven past the Tolgate many times and always fancied popping in, so today we did. We were sat in the conservatory area which was very nice, just a tad cold but the outside temperature was near 0. Our order was taken almost immediately, two hot drinks, a breakfast and eggs Benedict. A friendly couple then sat on the table next to us and ordered their food around five/ten minutes after we had. Shortly after, the hot drinks came and not long after that the couple on the table next to us had their two breakfasts brought to their table. Some time had past and our breakfast still hadn’t arrived,...

"Went for an impromptu meal with her indoors, as this was a local pub we've not been in for a long time we thought will pop in. Greeted by an over enthusiastic bar person who was dragging out the empties from the night before, ordered a couple of drinks and we sat down with the menu's, after perusing the menu we were ready to order, at the same time we were ready a regular couple walked in and sat at there regular table and oredered there regular meal, but the regular gentleman actually wanted an extra sausage with his sausage and chips, well! The kerfuffle this caused was astronomical, this conversation went on for Many many minutes, my wife and I was desperately trying to catch her attention to have another drink, eventually my wife went to the bar and waited, we got served eventually. Then our food came out of the kitchen, we went for the light bites as we were in a snacky mood, Chicken strips Mozzarella bites Chips with curry sauce and nachos. We never got the nachos as there was no guacamole BTW Chips came out which were actually fries, covered in this sauce, gross, then we had 3 chicken strips with no garnish £4.95 £1.63 each Then 4 mozzarella bites came out, no, nothing else just 4 mozzarella bites, £4.95 £1.24 each. So if you want have your pants pulled down and be robbed of your hard earned cash then this is the place to go, as for me and my wife we won't be. We did mention the poor quality and value for money but it was brushed under the dirty carpet and she was going to feed our comments back to the kitchen."

"Extremely disappointing visit and will not return. 2 of us were seated and told someone would be back to take drinks order. This took over 10 minutes. Meanwhile, a much larger table was seated next to us and had their orders taken. Their drink order arrived before ours had been taken. Ordered one beef roast and one lamb roast. Was average and certainly not worth the prices being charged. There are several better quality and better value roast lunches in the area. Ordered cauliflower cheese and pigs in blankets as extra. Cauliflower cheese was full of stalks and certainly not worth the £4.95 being charged. Even if this came as part of the roast, it still wouldn 't make the price of £19.50 for the dinner feel any better value. It was truly awful. Pigs in blankets didn 't arrive. My partner eventually caught the waitress ' attention after around 10 minutes, she asked where they were....really wish she hadn 't now! Waitress apologised, went straight to the kitchen and brought back a pot with 4 cold, dried up, burnt things in it. The sausage was completely dry and crumbly. Probably the worst pig in blanket I have ever tried to eat. We left these. Again, if they 'd have been included in the price of the lunch, the prices being charged is still not justified. No check on us during the meal or issues would have been highlighted. Restaurant area was incredibly hot, lots of people fanning themselves with menus. By the time i 'd finished lunch, I just wanted to leave. Waitress came to clear the table, still didn 't ask if everything was ok. Just asked if we 'd like to see the dessert menu. I replied no, we 'll just pay the bill please . Waitress said ok and disappeared. I 'd already seen the dessert menu and wasn 't going to pay £7.95 for any dessert after the quality of food I had already been presented with. Who can justify £7.95 for 3 scoops of ice cream anyway? I think that just proves how overpriced this place actually is! Waitress didn 't come back with the bill or card machine, neither did anyone else. We waited for 20 minutes and I decided to pay on the way out. It was only after, I realised that a 10% service charge had also been added to the bill of this overpriced food. Had I realised, this would have been taken off as the service was really poor."

"I was excited to revisit the New Inn after many years, as it used to be a favorite spot of mine. My group of 8 had pre-ordered at the request of the New Inn, but we were told 15 minutes after our booking time that our food was just being prepared. An hour later, our food still hadn't been served. After checking with the staff, the manager assured us that our order was next. Another 10 minutes passed before our food finally arrived. The gammon came with sides that we didn't like and were not mentioned on the menu. The portions were oversized, which was nice, but they were too much and off-putting. The salad trimmings were of poor quality. The fish in batter was enjoyed by those who ordered it. The main meals were okay, but I would have preferred better quality over quantity. We had to chase the staff for a glass of water, and even after being offered dessert menus, no one came to take our order. When we decided to follow up at the bar, the manager seemed more interested in finding out which staff member had failed to take our order than in solving the issue. The service was okay but could have been better, as no one checked on us after our meals were served. It seems like the staff could benefit from more positive training from a supportive mentor. When we asked for the bill, it took a while for it to be brought to us, so we ended up paying on the way out. It's a shame, as I had fond memories of the New Inn, but I am unlikely to return after this experience."
