"Drove into car park but is small and has no markings so but chaotic parking. Not surprised that we ended up blocked in when we came out and had to go back in and find car owner blocking us in! Pleasant welcome and nice table. Menu choice was good. Didn't have to wait too long for the food. Overall, food was nice but roast beef was too chewy! Felt it should have been excellent for a main course costing £14.95! Belly pork was tender. Menu mentioned nothing about the Sunday lunch deal whereby you get two courses for £16.95 and three courses for £19.95! It was posted up on a small board at the farthest end of the pub.. so not sure why that was! Bread and butter pudding was delicious but sticky toffee pudding was too dry and the edges were crusty not unlike when you microwave something for too long a time! I mentioned the issues with the beef and the pudding to staff and they apologised, though I might have expected the chef or manager to come and see us and maybe even offer some recompense if they were keen for us to return there again! Given there is another pub in the village offering Sunday lunch, I was surprised that the food and service wasn't consistently excellent!"

"Firstly, if you are visiting for dinner have limited mobility you’re in for a tough time. Not only is it a distance from the car park the terrain isn’t the best, especially in the dark. It could absolutely do with better signage. The restaurant has a nice atmosphere, relaxing, informal with friendly staff. The charcuterie plate was pleasant with plenty of pickles capers. A wider selection of meat would make this truly a stand out plate. The kedgeree scotch egg was a little bland very oily. The flavour was there, just really muted. Ribeye was particularly good value, not too fatty but more time could have been spent rendering this further. I didn’t appreciate the inclusion of the basting herbs, these were hidden under the steak easily found their spikey way into my mouth. The apple tart was disappointing rather expensive for the portion. The tart base was painfully brittle the filling a bland slightly sour apple purée. The Malbec wasn’t the best, very underwhelming, lacking colour fruit with very thin legs. Service: Dine in Meal type: Dinner"

"when I was a hapless passagier six months ago when I was first brought to the Tollgate and without a slight degree remembered the amazing coffee walnut cake I had, I made a special point today to take back a stretch from cornwall to london, which ensures a timely stop in this charming tea shop. I can not recommend to eat enough excellent, to die skorones (some rest, for which the exceptional friendly and friendly staff out on the way), magnificent views, and two wonderful little ponies. bypass all service stations and make them their way to this place, convenient right in front of the m4. we will surely come back!"

"We had a party to celebrate 80th and 70 birthdays. The buffet was very good catering for vegetarians and a child with nut and lactose allergies (this was after a consultation with the chef) The room was very warm and decorated with candles and wall hangings. Staff all very helpful and friendly. We had an overflow room to put coats and where the 19 children gathered. Marshfield is a great place to have such a party as there is plenty of B, AirB and pub accommodation in the village so people can walk back after the event. Many thanks to Alistair and his team!"

"I dined at Hywel Jones last week during my trip to the Cotswolds and had a mixed experience. First off, the good the food and wine were amazing. We chose to do the à la carte menu and each dish was so balanced. The amuse bouche which was a parsnip mash was incredible. The dishes were also beautifully constructed. Now on to the bad the hostess was awful and quite abrasive. She barely looked us in the eye and kind of tossed us the menus. She said she would send the sommelier over and walked off. As this was our first encounter with the staff, it instantly left a sour taste in my mouth. Luckily the rest of the staff were lovely. I had dined with 2 other people and we all realized that we had felt the same coldness from the hostess when discussing the dinner after the fact. A few minor things we noted about the service was that no one removed the crumbs from our table between courses and our napkins were not placed on our laps. These are things we have experienced at other Michelin star restaurants in France etc and while minor, they do enhance the dining experience."
