"My Chinese New Year reunion meal this year took place at Yangtse in Mannheim. The atmosphere is typical of a mid-range Chinese restaurant it is not a quiet place. Probably not the best place for a romantic date, as the Chinese like a noisy...and upbeat atmosphere when having a gathering and meals are no exception. There are private rooms available at the restaurant in case you prefer somewhere a little quiet to enjoy your meal. The lunch buffet offers a good number of Chinese dishes in various styles both cooked and deep-fried. There is also a decent-sized selection of raw ingredients for the Mongolian BBQ you pick what you want vegetables, meats, seafood and sauces, then you hand your selection over to the kitchen, where everything is cooked together and delivered to you when done. Bring an appetite, because there is also a sushi bar, a salad bar, a dessert counter including self-scoop ice-cream! The highlight of the buffet would have to be the “Duck” station. I’ve been wanting to try Yangtse's “Quan Ju De” Peking Duck since I heard about it, so I was rather impressed to see freshly-roasted ducks being carved on the spot. Unfortunately the ducks were not carved the “traditional” way where the skin is removed and served alongside separately-carved flesh. Perhaps because they are served as part of a buffet? The usual condiments for wrapping the duck meat are available though pancakes, dipping sauce, thinly-sliced scallions and cucumber batons. Yangtse was fully-packed today, it being Chinese New Year Eve. I suppose going during peak hours can be advantageous the turnover is high, so the buffet is kept well-stocked with freshly-cooked dishes. After today’s experience, I plan to return for the Peking Duck. This time I’ll enquire if they could carve and serve it the “proper” way. That would be awesome, and worth a rating of or even"

Mannheim, known for its grid layout and Baroque palace, offers hearty German cuisine. Try "Sauerbraten" (pot roast) and "Spätzle" (noodles) for a true local flavor.
