"2 years ago we ate twice in this pub and the food was excellent and good value for money. This year we spotted the To Let sign stuck on the pub and made comment that things may not be the same. How right we were! Whitby scampi and chips with mushy peas and tartare sauce . Was actually Youngs frozen scampi not properly cooked, in fact I guess it was microwaved (soggy), Batchelors mushy peas (eventually) and just about passable chips. Steak with tomato, mushrooms, onion rings and chips . Best of the three but the onion rings never arrived! Steak and Ale pie with fresh vegetables and chips Microwaved bought in pie (soggy and lukewarm), tinned veg (soggy) and chips. Its so annoying when you recognise the shop bought food and sold as fresh . Some staff worked hard to make things right others couldn 't give a dam and didn 't bother hiding it. If you plan to visit try driving further afield for the time being,"

Mid week visit and it was very quiet, not like the pub we used to visit on a regular basis. As another reviewer comented the Tentant Required sign probably puts people off. We both ordered rib eye steak, but it was very tough and my jaw ached at the end of the meal. However the chips, mushrooms and onion rings with it were good. Hope they get a permanent tenant soon who can improve things.

Went to Royal Oak for Sunday lunch. Generous portions and good value for money. The proprietors were very helpful, charming and attentive without being overbearing. The pub is also well presented, clean and appears like a proper pub, unpretentious in nature. A very enjoyable experience and, if we visit the area again, we will definitely be returning. Staff really nice, nice location for the pub. That’s about it in terms of good news…. I had roast beef Sunday dinner £18). I thought it was a children’s portion! Two tiny roast potatoes, half a carrot, small spoon of greens tablespoon mash. Two small slices beef just a drizzle of gravy. I half expected another plate of veg to arrive. I note several others have commented on the portion sizes, seems to be a common issue. View menu

Lovely country pub. On arrival it was very quiet with only two other customers present. The staff were there and said hi and the room was spacious and typical country pub. We looked at the menu which was limited, however quality over quantity is important to us and went on to order a burger and a Cumberland sausage. Great food, tasty, well presented and fresh and hot. Couldn't have been happier. The chef asked us how it was and was clearly proud of his work. All in all a nice lunch out and good experience.

My husband and I visited the Royal Oak during our honeymoon in the area. The pub had a cozy atmosphere and the staff were friendly. We were excited to try the pie of the day and spoke with the owner/landlord about ordering the last 2 pies. Our drinks, including a Big Sur IPA that my husband enjoyed, were served promptly. Despite the pub not being very busy, we waited over an hour for our food with no updates from the staff. When we inquired about our order, we were told that it had not been sent to the kitchen. We decided to leave, feeling disappointed, and ended up back at our hotel eating chips at 10pm. It was not the romantic evening we had hoped for. Food: 1 Service: 1 Atmosphere: 2

"We were sure to book ahead for a table of 4 for 5.15 as it was a late Sunday roast we were fully aware that not everything would be available so it was no surprise when we were told that there was only gammon left for the roast option however there was still fish and chips homemade steak pie or vegetable lasagne. We happily opted for 3 gammon roast dinners and a homemade steak pie with mash (you get the choice of which potato you'd like) The food arrived piping hot with plenty of everything and it was so so tasty you could really tell everything was lovingly made from scratch for the roast the potatoes came both roasted and mashed with cauliflower, broccoli and carrot and swede mash. A generous helping of gammon and a large Yorkshire pudding with gravy that was clearly made with the juices as it was so flavourful. The steak pie was brilliant too homemade with large chunks of steak and a choice of potato and whether you'd like the same veg as that with the roast or with peas. This also came with gravy. For dessert there was a choice of either chocolate fudge cake, caramel apple pie or sticky toffee pudding and you had the choice of either cream, ice cream or custard. 2 of us got it with custard and 2 of us got it with ice cream and it wasn't overbearingly sweet it was perfect with a delicious caramel top! We all thoroughly enjoyed all the food and the drinks and service and will be back again one day if we find ourselves holidaying here again"
