"Update October 2023 We were back in the area so dropped in to see how our former village local was faring. Very, very busy for an early afternoon or maybe that 's the way it is now. Beer still good but wine, I thought, was expensive. Wouldn 't call it a village local anymore, more of a roadside restaurant that sells beer. Obviously popular but not as welcoming as it used to be. I doubt if any of the barstaff would ever find time, or the inclination, to chat, which somehow is a marker for a real village pub. Original comment 2021 Was checking to see who would be running the the Ridley Arms now that SJF have sold on to another concern. The Ridley Arms used to be our local many years ago when we lived at Shotton. We were there when Whitbread gave up the lease and SJF took over. The night of the auction when everything including the floor was auctioned off was a night never to forget and raised a lot of money for the village school. Thanks of course that night must go to Mickey Dungait who must rank as the best auctioneer ever to have lived. He could certainly sell snow to Eskimos and was also the star of the annual leek show. Sadly in my opinion the Ridley was unnecessarily tarted up but credit to the new manager, of the day, the choice of real ale and quality of such was excellent. Unfortunately not allowing the locals to stand at the bar was, in my opinion, a big mistake and not in keeping with the notion of the village local . Sadly we felt the Ridley became a restaurant that sold beer, albeit, very good beer, rather than the village boozer that sold food. Now that a new company has taken over from SJF it will be interesting to see what the future holds. I will definitely visit when next in the most fantastic county that is Northumberland!
