"Hi I haven't been to the White Hart for dinner since before Covid came along. In a way I didn't realise or really remember to go there again. The food was excellent I had Hake with a kind of potato fondant and some vegetables and my friend had the fish pie. We will definitely go there again and now it's back on my radar to tell other friends about dining there. We were not in the main section with the high ceiling but the more intimate section /room on the side of that restaurant. kind regards Darshita"

The lunchtime triple decker sandwich plate was bigger than we expected. Plenty of salad. Yum!

Rather unpleasant. Table in a scruffy little corner and average food. Needs to smarten up its act. View menu

The restaurant has a lovely exterior and the staff is courteous, however, there are no gluten-free or vegan options on the menu. Additionally, the prices are too high.

The food was amazing, and the staff was very attentive without being pushy. The restaurant was roomy, and we didn't feel rushed. The only downside was that our table was near a door, so we got cold blasts of air every time it opened. It may not have been a problem on a better weather day.

Visited Sunday evening as staying overnight for work. Service was very quick and friendly. I ordered the roast beef which with roast potatoes, large Yorkshire pudding with veg on the side. The beef was very tender and was a large portion. All the food was served hot and plenty for a satisfying meal. Will be returning this evening. Highly recommend as good food at a reasonable price for a hotel. View menu

We had a very good meal at the White Hart. My duck leg confit was excellent with generous potions of red cabbage and tenderstem broccoli. The beef pie and chips was good. The meal was a bit expensive compared with other gastropubs in the Totnes area. However the portions were so generous that we couldn't manage desert. Plus point on drinks: no alcohol gin with Luscombe light tonic but minus point: no alcohol lager was Heineken which is poor quality. Prefer Lucky Saint or Peroni Zero.

We had a fantastic roast dinner for Mother's Day at this restaurant. The chef's skills in cooking lamb, potatoes, cauliflower cheese, and Yorkshire pudding were evident in the top-quality dishes we enjoyed. There were plenty of tables available, so we were able to make a booking just a couple of days beforehand. The restaurant is located in Dartington Estate, which is a great place with lots to do. We even went for a 1-hour walk to Totnes and back after our meal. We will definitely be returning soon.

"The positive is that the food is good. But the negative is the service time and the attitude of the staff. We were seated and had our order taken after 20 minutes. A little slow but it was a busy Saturday evening so understandable. Starters came promptly and were eaten. We then got ignored by every passing member of staff for at least 50 minutes. Quite the skill! Once there was a break in our conversation and I realised how long it had been, I stood up to intercept a waitress and asked “are our mains on the way, please?” Our ticket was checked by her at the kitchen hatch and we were told “yes”. At this point our starter plates were cleared after they had sat on the table for at least 35 minutes. Our mains then took another 25 minutes to get to us, so I suspect that being told they were on their way was a lie. To be clear: we were given our mains 1hr 20 mins after placing our order. I complained to a waitress who sent over a manager. The manager asked if we’d had starters (yes, we had) and said that it was our fault our main was so late as we’d had a first course. How insulting!!! Blaming the customer for their bad service. Disgusting. When I said it was still far too long to wait between courses she then changed tack and said the kitchen was “really really busy” well, they weren’t busy cooking our food now were they?! And despite the place being full when we arrived, by this point of the night over half the tables were empty. There were 3 tickets on the pass along with ours and tables were 2 4 people (no large groups) so I feel that was also another lie to get out of it. What a shocking way to treat customers! My advice to you is: if you want your food served in a timely manner, either take the advice of the manager and don’t order a starter, or, be sure to communicate with waitstaff once your first course is finished and ask for your main to be cooked and served promptly. (Note: food also sat under the heat lamps for long lengths of time as staff stood socialising with one another behind the bar rather than serve customers) I hope this advice is of use as I would have appreciated it ahead of my visit! Good luck. [Reading other reviews, ours is not the only experience of slow service and seeing staff chat to one another rather than deal with the customers paying their wages.
