I have not been here in nearly years, but was a regular when I was stationed in Heidelberg with the U.S. Army. Best steak this side of Frankfurt, and you get to cook it on a hot rock they bring to your table. The guy that noted that this is not the place for vegetarians is incorrect as they have a very nice baked potato (it does include great sour cream so not for vegans). The steak cooked on the rock is the best part. Yes, you cook...it yourself. I suggest a large fillet (which comes with a baked potato and salad). It was all very well done and the building is years old. A great experience.

On a couples trip with my battle buddy to revisit Germany and this place was recommended. I cannot believe that the whole time I was stationed in Germany, I had not heard of this place. A very fantastic vintage German restaurant. The meat, potatoes, and...desserts were fantastic. The service although busy on a Saturday was still very prompt and friendly. I highly recommend this place myself. Take the drive, you will not be let down. I promise!

the atmosphere and the service are very good. the restaurant is not too large with ca. tables in the main floor and tables in the old vaulted cellar. the food is great and offers various steaks, large potato with different types of delicious...cream sauces. the menu also has other great dishes except steaks, even if the steaks are the speciality here. it is a wonderful place to eat if they want to do something from the ordinary with a special feature. the amount of food they get is a lot! We took a train from Heidelburg to Ladenburg and walked a few blocks to find this little place that was recommended by our airbnb host. What a great find! We were able to sit out on the patio, but spent a few minutes wandering around...the interior looking at the really interesting old photos. We had steak and pork loin, both with potatoes and salad. The food was very good, and easy to cook on the stones. Service was attentive but not hovering, which was nice. All over a fun experience. It should be noted CASH ONLY

This restaurant came highly recommended by a colleague of mine. It is set in the walled, quaint town of Ladenburg. Beautiful cobblestone roads and walks. The food was amazing. The salad was quite tasty. The baked potato was great topped with the sour cream sauce....The main event was the filet. The most desired cut. It’s served on a degree Celsius stone. It is seared to your perfection right in front of you. The building was constructed in I believe. What amazing history this restaurant and town have! This is a must see!

Housed in a century building, the interior of Die Kartoffel is lovingly filled with all sorts of antiques and bric-a-brac.
