"We went to the Rising Sun for a family Sunday lunch. We were seated in the conservatory, we asked if we could sit out on the deck but this is not possible if you’re having Sunday lunch. The sun was shining directly in my in-laws faces, when we asked if the blind could be lowered the waitress asked her manager who said this couldn’t be done. The alternative table we were offered was too small for our party of five to be seated comfortably so we elected to stay put. The Sunday lunch was ok, though the quantity of meat and roast potatoes for the price was not particularly generous, especially for those of us who had beef. The thin pieces of beef were reminiscent of school dinners. We decided to have a two course lunch with pudding. We had quite a long wait before the puddings we ordered arrived. My husband enjoyed his strawberry cheesecake but I was disappointed with the Eton Mess because it was about 60% crème fraiche, 29% compote and 1% meringue. The crumble seemed like it had been microwaved and had very little flavour. Service was attentive but slow, the group at the next table had been waiting for their starter for a while when the manager told them it would be a couple of minutes; they still hadn’t arrived by the time we left. The manager was quite dogmatic, shouting across the room at his staff. We had only gone there because of the view and would not go there again to eat."

Absolutely furious. A lovely pub now spoilt by 'card only payments ' and as I 'm awaiting a new card I can 't eat here. Will not be coming again.

Fabulous food and interesting wine list. Great service and presentation. Suggest you eat inside. The pods and covering outside make it look more Glastonbury . Inside near the fire has a great ambience

The location is beautiful, the views are stunning, the food not so great, prawn cocktail 3 prawns, picnic boards were lacklustre, belly pork bites tasty but small portions, vegetarian burger which was quite tasty, roast chicken breast was tasty and tender- the food was a little disappointing

We stayed with a couple of Motorhome’s by prior arrangement. Lovely sunset and deck. Then came Into eat. Pub food done well. Drank loads of a good local beer and a few bottles of wines. Not overly expensive. Owner has engaging and Interesting. Clearly working very hard to make something of the business. We will return. Not only for the view but because people trying hard and working hard in local pubs need support.

Best Sunday lunch we’ve had in a long time. Beef cooked perfectly, one of the party wanted well done beef rather than medium and this was no issue. Belly pork was incredible and the veg was fresh and lots of it. Loved the way it all came out on a board. Quite pricey but everywhere is the same at the moment and we didn’t mind paying the price for the quality of the meal. Staff were friendly, seating area inside the pub felt nice and cosy. Would definitely return.

From the personal greeting as the owner came out to meet us, to the perfect service, to the excellent food and the outstanding views over the vale, this lunch was faultless. Nothing too much trouble! I always say that a great Sunday lunch is all about the meat the roast beef was perfect! Pink in the middle, meltingly tender and plentiful couldn't have done better myself. The vegetables were beautifully cooked with more than enough even for the hungriest of people, we really couldn't have got a better meal anywhere. Highly recommend!

The whole area is beautiful, the views as you sit in the garden are some of the best you could see anywhere. There were dogs in the garden and it was a beautiful sunny day. I totally understand why they have an outdoor menu but feel most people would prefer a few fries and a great sandwich for lunch. A group of and we ordered different items but eating cauliflower off a tray is not really what I had in mind for The Vegan burger was dry and tasteless. It isn't about the price but they could do so much better I even think the tray for burgers, may work.

Upon our arrival, we were shown to our table and seated. The drinks orders were taken quickly but they took at least 20 minutes to come. We ordered a roast sharing board. We had been at our table for over an hour before the first course came out the staff didn't apologise or seem interested. When our food finally arrived, we asked for some salt and were given sachets of salt that was congealed in the packet. Yet, another table had been given salt and pepper grinders (they also had all their courses before us and arrived after us). We didn't get asked about whether we wanted anymore drinks when our glasses were empty so we ended up having to go to the bar as it was quicker. We decided to orde...

The building was cold and draughty, not helped by two doors being left open, although it was a busy time, everything seemed very rushed in terms of service and the manager seemed abrupt at times. The food itself was most disappointing, nothing was hot, probably not helped by being served on a wooden board we won’t make that mistake again, the quality of the beef was good but the vegetables, Yorkshire pudding and gravy were very poor. The potatoes were hard and tasted unpleasant, they had definitely been reheated, possibly over reheated and then let get cold again. The parsnips and carrots also had that reheated taste and texture. The medley of veg red cabbage, kale and a broccoli gratin were...

"The best thing about our experience was the telephone booking for a special lunch. Lovely, friendly, helpful person who noted that it was my wife’s 50th and would pass this on so the staff could ensure that this would be a great and memorable occasion.Lovely day, the sun shining, and the setting glorious – but the moment we entered, things were not as anticipated – a “matter of fact” greeting, perhaps acceptable in an ordinary 3 star hotel, but little warmth – a vague, “who are you?” from the maître d’ on entering the restaurant, as if we were intruding on their comfortably empty dining room and they would be called to work – and a rather “take it or leave it” from the waitress, though we did get an embarrassed smile on one occasion – the only smile we received all lunchtime. The menu was rather unexciting – I ought to have looked on line first Very little range, though lunches probably don’t have a resident chef at that time of day, so that might limit the available options: baguette, beetroot tartare with rice, burger, black bean burger, fish and chips tarted up with “Iford cider”, tagliatelle, a gnocchi, sirloin steak, and a “superfood salad” with choice between chicken breast, smoked salmon, and tofu. We opted for the latter, one chicken, two salmon, and added 3 extra sides (great idea with us choosing pork belly, polenta chips and gougère. Having taken our order we were told, “sorry, there’s no gougère,” so we chose the “crispy calamari” instead. For drinks we chose the local Kettlesmith beer, which I enjoy anyway, and an alcohol free Pink Negroni. The latter arrived and was so alcoholic it could well have made our driver fail a breath test on the spot – maybe that was why we were billed £11.50 for the replacement, an unadorned, ungarnished glass, mainly of ice cubes that rapidly melted into a warm alcohol-free wishy-washy liquid I suppose we should not have expected too much of an alcohol free cocktail, normally of gin and vermouth .. but what was quite unacceptable was that the thin strip of orange peel that had enhanced the original, probably quite lovely cocktail, was absent and no one had bothered to replace it, not even with a sprig of mint!Well, maybe the food might make up for it? No such luck. The attractive, large ceramic bowls were generously filled with a range of leaves, but the kale, hard and chewy as kale at the end of a hard winter, (or a mature chard) failed in a desperate attempt to masquerade as tender. The chicken dumped atop was bland, with any taste poached out of it, and the salmon was just ordinary farm-bred, cheap supermarket salmon. I loved the pork belly – could have had a full plate of that! – but the polenta chips were pretty mushy under a tasteless crumbly, far from crispy cover, and the replaced calamari a disaster – far from “Crispy”, they drooped into a bowl, batter hanging off, and the cooking oil that welled at the bowl apex typified the lacklustre attention of the kitchen, examples of whom waddled in and out with shoulder-burdened posture and bored, inattentive facial expressions that seemed to typify the rest of the on duty staff on what should have been a happy celebrative half-a-century birthday – an occasion that not one member of staff had even bothered to acknowledge! The setting is a typical local Jacobean building with Victorian additions and a lovely green countryside overview. The garden has a few choice plants, shrubs and trees but could have been cared for more attentively. The view from the restaurant needed more care and a bit of back-bending weeding. The restaurant was tired and disappointing, but the architecture holding up the ceiling glass was imaginative and the lighting, if needed, would have been exciting. Perhaps the brown-edged, ailing leaves on the table and wall plant decorations were typical of this establishment’s attitude to making what should have been a joyful occasion into one that made us never, ever want to grace it with our presence again."
