"We booked a table for 4 people (at 1pm) for Thursday 29th December. I have to admit, apart from the fish on the plates, (chips weren’t good) it must have been our worst experience at The Thorn Tree. I don’t know if you have a new owner/manager or staff but none of the “happy staff” that we have been used to we’re working yesterday. There was one young man that from what we could see, was only just managing to cope. He was literally running the bar/orders/seeting and serving single handed. This guy was doing great, to say that he had no help on the outside of the kitchen. The chips were certainly the worst we have ever been served. Lots of tiny pointed chips and quite a few chips were green fleshed. We would usually have stayed for desserts but the whole restaurant was “uncomfortably cold”. We understand that heating and energy prices have increased dramatically but myself and many others, are not prepared to pay good money, to sit and eat/drink in an uncomfortably cold restaurant. I would have certainly left this review on TripAdvisor but I have been told in the past “our TripAdvisor account has been compromised by a former employee”. So I’m not sure that there is much point, apart from sharing my opinions with others. In the past, I have always recommended and highly rated The Thorn Tree but no more"

Pleasant pub style restaurant in a nice location overlooking fields at the back. Lunchtime menu simple but nicely cooked and attentive informal service.

Excellent in every respect. I was a little hesitant after change of ownership but it seems that standards have been maintained. Food service and environment all perfect. Prices have risen somewhat of course but menu options and quality and quantity great. Would highly recommend a visit

This is definitely work in progress. Good points. Fish and chips and pea fritters good. Server young and personable Areas for development. Cold temperature in the restaurant, no atmosphere as such, some light background music would have been better, mushy peas cold. Finally don't start a restaurant deep clean before the end of service. I bring my father and other members of the family here on a regular basis because the food is excellent. The focus is on fish, with lovely battered cod or haddock but the grilled fish on a well dressed salad base is absolutely delicious good value at around £13. My Californian daughter-in-law to be adored this dish, plus the dessert assortment.

I have to say I wasn’t overly blown away by the food we received when we visited. The pizza base felt shop brought and wasn’t overly nice, my partners mushy peas was stone cold! We was the only ones in there at the time and staff seemed to be short. When paying we wasn’t asked if everything was ok until after we had paid, once asked I explained it wasn’t as good as I would have expected and no response given. Wouldn’t personally return however that’s from my experience.

Came here as a large group, hadn't booked but was told this was ok. If you don't want drop in trade, why not use your mouth and say. We then sat and waited whilst other people were served but wasnt given any indication about what was happening, inform your customers, this helps. Our group was going to have food but due to the rudeness of one particular staff member, we choose to leave after the drink. Not a welcoming atmosphere and when one of our group asked to speak to someone, no apologies we're offered View menu

Don’t know what’s changed but from being served by several young teenagers who found it hard to grasp the order I wanted to getting food home wasn’t a pleasant experience. Positives were that the chips were lovely and the pea fritters excellent. Negatives, large fish was actually very small and overcooked. Nearly £4 for a pukka pie! What happened to the good pies they used to sell? Battered sausage that the kids said tasted funny and wouldn’t eat. In fact non of us ate it but the dog said it was ok. On the whole, a complete waste of £25 for one fish, one pie, I large and one small chips plus a sausage and chips kids meal. Total rip off

On arriving it was a very cold night. We expected a lovely fire lit and at least warm. How wrong we were !! We all ended up wearing our thick winter coats and scarfs while eating our meal which I must add was very salty. We then had a hot drink and hot pudding to try and thaw ourselves out. Which didn’t work. We had just finished it when a waiter came over to us and asked us if we would mind leaving as they have under 18 working there. We arrived at 7pm and left at 9:30 pm. We didn’t except to be asked to leave and if we had have known about the heating situation we would never have booked. But they were very happy to take our money surprise surprise

"we enjoyed another very pleasant dinner at the Dog’ in pentrich recently. it is a very civilized but relaxed escaping area, and the type of place where people are miles for, for the culinary experience traveling and with good ground. eating is good. the dining room is spacious, contemporary and beautifully furnished with a relaxed ambiente. also the adjacent bar area is very cozy and cozy. we were warmly welcomed and immediately shown on our table. the service was attentive and pleasant, without being overlaid or intrusive. our meals were very pleasant and we enjoyed the selection of things we had (start, head and dessert). However, it seemed to be some unconsistencies with a portion size. with the appetizers the leek and the potato portion was very small a piece laek about two centimeters long filled with cheese and in a sea of sauce to convey the grasp of “more”. the crispy szechuan cauliflower and aubergine, on the other hand, contained large parts of the two components of the teller. similar to the net, the green thai chicken contained three very large portions of huh in different shapes: a large chicken breast as the main component of the Thai chicken shell, accompanied by a huge serving of shredded chicken in rice, and a huge Bao beer filled with a large piece of baked chicken. while the various components were delicious, it was just chicken overload, almost like three main dishes as one, and much too much. the same applies to the puddings we have chosen. the dog inn trifle was a huge bowl with lemon-rossel sponge, with white chocolate-creuzard, and celestial gel and sorbet. the yorkshire rhubarb cheesecake, on the other hand, was a very small roll of cheesecake with a puppy game of rhubarb sorbet and a few pieces of poached rhubarb. our meals were certainly delicious, and we enjoyed them. the hanger steak was cooked nicely after a discussion about it; it was clearly stated on the menu that the hanger steak was ‘Served ‘Pink or well Done’, but we were informed that it could not be ordered well. which condition is then on the menu? the dog is worth looking. it is in the beautiful and historical village pentrich, on the b1016 between the towns ripley and alfreton in derbyshire. we're coming back."
