"Six of us were let down at another pub for Sunday Roast, but we phoned late on the bank holiday Sunday and were greeted by a very helpful person who said if we arrived by 3:30, he would fit us in. When we got there, the bar and restaurant area was very busy, but the staff were lovely and helpful. We sat outside after ordering because the inside was packed. While we were enjoying our drinks and waiting for our food, it started to rain. They moved us under cover and then found us seating inside just before the food arrived. The food was stunning! Cooked to perfection, it was the best beef roast I have ever had in a restaurant. All six of us agreed. It wasn't expensive either - 2 courses and a drink worked out to just over £22 per person. Well done to the chef and bar staff, you were amazing. We will definitely be back. Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5 Recommended dishes: Sunday Roast."

We never planned to come to Maylandsea but part of our planned walk was underwater today so we stopped for a drink here to work out what to do next. What a lovely, warm welcome we had from Keith and the the team. A really friendly bar. We didn’t get to sample the food but we’ll be back when it’s drier! The beer was also excellently kept and poured. And to cap it all, Keith’s lovely wife Sandra gave us a lift back to our car. We met some lovely people today.

Another lovely lunch at the Blackwater Quay. The garden is looking lovely and the food good. My two visiting friends were really impressed. It would have been a 5 but just a couple of niggles. We picked up menus and no one mentioned no fish was available. We were at the far end of the garden so I had to nip back for new choices as we'd all opted for fish. When food arrived, we hadn't been reminded that cutlery and condiments were in the bar so off I went again. Small things that didn't affect a great lunch though. Really great work done by the new team there

"We come to Maldon fairly regularly and occasionally stay over. The New Pavilion is was one of our favourite go to restaurants. We arrived at 7:30, as booked, and were very happy to see the front restaurant full except for our table for two. We ordered drinks at the bar and sat at our table. Maybe we should have been more aware of the situation when, after about 15 minutes, we had to tell the staff we were now ready to order. The young waitress was very apologetic and we said it was no problem, not her fault as she was doing two jobs waitressing and covering the bar as the barman had literally disappeared and was occasionally seen serving an old meal. Now we were waiting. 40 minutes? During this time we noticed a number of people shaking their heads at the staff. People walking out after questioning the service and the delay. The poor waitress, we could literally hear her in the back room crying. When our starters came we cancelled our main courses. My wife said my baked Camembert looked like a crème brûlée. I did eat it though and pay for it. I was not going to put the waitress through any more stress. I spoke to the barman as we were leaving and he seemed very surprised that I mentioned the overload of work the waitress was doing covering both jobs. He never said what he was doing during his absence. I did say that as he was obviously not the owner it was probably not his fault as well. All the tables in our corner agreed with what I told the bar manager and we’re about to leave without food. I will be very interested to see the owners reply and any excuse he comes up with. There’s no excuse. Get more staff. Hopefully the waitress has walked across the road to a top restaurant that treat their staff better. She was brilliant and deserved better treatment."
