"I took my wife (to be) here 35 years ago and we have been dozens of times since. Tonight was as if it was a different restaurant. We had to ask for menus after waiting for 15 minutes. The wine arrived half way through the starters (which were good). The main courses were mediocre, the rice and naan especially so. After staring at our plates for 20 minutes we had to ask for the bill which came with an added service charge. Kalpna had been one of the leaders in veggie food in Edinburgh, now they have a lot of catching up to do. I assume the restaurant has changed hands, or maybe they (like everyone) just had an off day. It was also difficult to be sure from the menu what was vegan and what was not. Updated from previous review on 2023-05-26"

The food was all good but the restaurant was very very busy and so the wait was quite long.

Enjoyed my lunchtime buffet, with most of the options being vegan. Updated from previous review on 2024-03-09

They have a couple of unique items I have not seen in any restaurant. One is Saam Savera and the other is Shahi Sabzi. View menu

As someone who eats Indian food regularly due to my cultural background, I tend to avoid Indian restaurants. However, Kalpna was a pleasant surprise. The staff, especially Rahul, was knowledgeable about the vegan options and the vegan thali I ordered was exceptional. I would definitely return and recommend this restaurant.

Disappointing for me as well. They save on spices, even the signature dish is something without taste and a lot of tomato sauce. The vegan Dali is very small and also not tasty, and all is heavily overpriced. Buy some ready made Indian food in a supermarket instead. Plus note a 10% service charge which is not on the menu (for a service that isn’t good).

The paneer masala was delicious, but the rest of the platter didn't live up to expectations. I paid £17 for the thali, which turned out to be a total rip-off as there was much less food than if I had just ordered a main with rice. Despite the description suggesting a generous serving, the portions were disappointingly small. For taste alone, the meal deserved 2 stars, as it left me feeling unsatisfied in both quantity and value for money. View menu

Usually I love Kalpna as their food is delicious and affordable with lots of options and a cosy atmosphere. but we turned up today just after 12pm on a Sunday when they are meant to be open according to website and it was closed. A member of staff saw us and went into the restaurant but when we asked he said no they are closed. I said just to let them know, their opening hours online aren’t up to date, and they just said yeah they know. No explanation, no apology. Bit disappointed but would give it another go but call in advance to see if they’re open. Updated from previous review on 2022-09-11

Kalpna has undergone a change in ownership, a few years ago, which has impacted the atmosphere. While the current service is not bad, it lacks the warmth and hospitality that the previous owners provided. Prices can be high in the evening, but the restaurant offers a decent selection of vegan options. Lunchtime, however, is when Kalpna truly shines. Their all-you-can-eat buffet is an excellent value, with almost all dishes being vegan except for one curry. Although the restaurant could use some updates, it remains a worthwhile spot for a lunchtime visit if you're in the city. Updated from previous review on 2023-01-21

"new kapitel has caught my attention after I was on top ten on trip advisor only months after the opening in the oktober last year. that and the fact that it is open for my early january birthday, made it the perfect place to celebrate to become a little older. I was with the man and his family. the man is quite used to my taste and good to the kind of kitchen that would appeal to me for a special occasion; his family not so much and I was filled with shame as his mother scornful went through the menu trying to find something she would enjoy. I've eaten with the family of the man, and I know they enjoy eating, so I think it's a failure of the menu that it is not accessible. the benming always blooming and garnish can appeal to some, but for others it is overcomplicated and it is necessary to find a balance between the two. we start with the starters and I go for venison sour wort pithvier. the venison was underheated and incredibly dry, to the happiness the sourded a little moisturizing and so saved the whole dish, but the aromen were quite not clear, except the garnitur of plastered mushrooms I thoroughly enjoyed. for the largest part we chose a fish dish for our main,- sea trout, smoked muddles, petersilien and coast herbs. where the starter fell, the main recording is getting back. the dish is rich and creamy, and each element adds the complexity of the taste as a whole, without disturbing. the concept is now an old one, and it would be deceptive if it had not worked, as it would essentially pay with this place. I enjoyed my meal in new chapter, although I do not agree with it is stellar status under the hierarchy of edinburgh eateries. it is top ten position is just a flash in the pan of hot popularity, and in time it will be plated in the upper half of the middle stage where it belongs. and that is where it belongs, the dishes can be plated with a michelin star in understood, and the venue and the supporting media has the clean lines and empty slate look of fine but eat the team has a long gone to go if that is their real aim. at the end, although it was a beautiful meal, and cheap (at the moment I would not be surprised to see their prices slowly rise) and the man’s mother found something they enjoyed and that is the most important."
