"Food was good, but expensive. 23 quid for a beef roast. The service was a great way. Arrived had booked my table for 17:30 to be told by a busy waitress that the kitchen was closed. She said she'd check and come back and said she could take us. She couldn't really find where to sit. Finally, the only seat was in an over illuminated area with tired decor. She came and sprayed the table with disinfectant. We had to ask if we were served at the table or at the bar, and in the end we had to ask if we paid at the bar or if they would bring the bill to the table. We didn't offer a desert menu. Generally not very attentive service and had the feeling that they want it down and not especially that we are there."

I adore this pub! It is very cozy with a well-stocked bar. There is an open fire in the winter and a delightful beer garden in the summer. The staff is always welcoming and friendly. View menu

possibly the worst roast I've ever had. Dry, overcooked and tasted of nothing. The veg was sweet corn and green beans... They'd run out of everything else. Not what you expect at those prices on a Sunday mid afternoon.

We were disappointed to find that despite our booking being confirmed by your website, the restaurant was closed for a private party when we arrived. We had to quickly make a reservation at the Maynard and return later just for a drink.

We popped to the Alex for a relaxed Sunday Roast and we were not disappointed. A lovely atmosphere in the bar area, which continued into the restaurant seating which also had a roaring fire. The staff were friendly, chatty and served us well. The food was great, my sous vide leg of lamb was moist and delicate, served with a rustic mint jelly that I couldn't get enough off. The price was a little steep, but not too bad, the only real negative was the toilet which I think needs to be the very top of the list for next improvements. View menu

The food was decent but expensive, with a beef roast priced at 23 pounds. However, the service was disappointing. Despite booking a table for 17:30, we arrived to find that the kitchen was already closed. After some confusion, we were eventually seated in a poorly lit area with tired decor. The waitress seemed not to know where to place us and even sprayed the table with disinfectant in front of us. We had to ask about the service and payment process, and were not offered a dessert menu. Overall, the service was not very attentive and it felt like they were trying to rush us out rather than make us feel welcome.

I went to the Alex for my birthday meal with three friends. We had planned to go to the Victoria Stakes but had to find another venue as it was closed because of a fire. There was no one else in the restaurant and it was very cold, despite the fire being lit. I hadn 't realised how 'meaty ' the Alex menu was I don 't eat meat! The only main courses that I could eat were fish and chips or mussels. I chose the mussels and these were really nice. My friends who ordered the fish and chips were disappointed to find that the chips were doorsteps rather than 'fries ' and also found the fish had too much batter. The wine went down well. It was a good evening but I won 't rush back.
