"Based on some good reviews we went here for my wife's birthday. My wife chose a vegan filo pastry parcel and I chose a vegan falafel burger with hummus. The filo pastry was so tough my wife struggled to cut it open; the interior was excessively sweet and not worth the effort. The vegan falafel was tasteless and stodgy, so was the bun. Even the chips (the thin french fries variety) were like cardboard. We both left most of our meals and abandoned any idea of desert. The bar staff did not seem surprised we were unhappy and we were obviously not the first to say the burger was terrible. For comparison we went into the nearby Rose Cottage cafe for coffee and cake the food looked lovely and was *much* better value. Updated from previous review on 2019 02 18"

This restaurant offers a variety of vegan dishes on its menu, with jackfruit being a standout option. It's the perfect spot to grab a bite after a hike!

Nice restaurant/hotel that provides excellent vegan food. The staff went out their way to help me find a vegan beer! excellent value for money! Updated from previous review on 2021-07-12

I had a delicious and flavorful lunch that was surprisingly good despite the mixed reviews I had read beforehand. As someone who can be picky about food, I was pleasantly surprised by the simple yet tasty meal. View menu

I stopped by this restaurant for lunch and thoroughly enjoyed a delicious ploughman's platter filled with meat, cheese, and pork pie. The staff was friendly and the atmosphere was welcoming. It was a relief to find a place in town without any hikers. I would rate the service a 5 and the location a 4.

Disappointing meal. Food drinks: Beware the homemade stew with large whole raw pickled onions in it. They will leave a wash of pickling vinegar at the bottom of your bowl. Not good. Would not recommend! Also if you run out of bread as described on the menu please inform before food it ordered. Service: 3 Location: 5 Hotel highlights: Great view

We went on a busy Saturday night and they seemed to be struggling. Much more limited selection of vegan options than portrayed on the website and other reviews. Ordered a number of sides as didn’t fancy the one vegan main. Small portions, slightly cold and underwhelming. I know covid is impacting all restaurants but this wasn’t anything like we were expecting from the reviews. View menu

This is an amazing country pub/hotel with welcoming staff, cozy fires, and a bar specifically for dogs! They offer a vegan option for every course and three choices for main dishes. I tried the chicken-less burger and salted caramel cheesecake, both of which were delicious. I highly recommend this place, but keep in mind that it can get busy on Mondays and Tuesdays, so booking ahead for the weekend is advisable.

We arrived in our motorhome, but were informed by the sign in the car park that no motorhomes or camping were allowed. However, upon speaking with Jack inside, we learned the reason behind this policy. Despite the initial setback, we decided to stay for drinks and ultimately returned the following day for a meal. We opted for the 32oz tomahawk steak, which was meant to serve two people. The meal was incredible, and we even had to request a box to take the leftovers home. The staff was very friendly and knowledgeable. We will definitely be coming back again. Service: 5 stars.

"We stopped for two nights. We ate in the pub on both nights. We had a fantastic stay, this is a great, cosy, traditional pub in the beauty of Yorkshire. The room had everything you need, it wasn't the most modern room but no complaints. I like the little touches like a full-sized mug and the Decaff coffee bags. The first night the heating was on a little too much, it's on a thermostat and was a little warm but it wasn't too bad, as it was so cold outside. Some fellow guests we met one evening said their bed was rock hard, but, we had no complaints, my wife said it was a little lumpy on her side but I really didn't have any issues. The pub has plenty of parking around the back; where you can see they have some Glamping Pods. It is currently undergoing renovations in the room between the main bar and the dining area, which, had recently been painted and looked very nice. Allround, the pub was in a great location to be far enough out of Whitby but close enough, it only took 25mins to drive in. There is nothing around the pub, we walked to Danby the first evening but that hasn't not much in it either. However, it is perfect for walkers and those with dogs, we use it just as a base so we didn't mind and it was nice to be out in the countryside. We ate twice, both nights. Friday was busier in the pub, we did book but no need, as they had plenty of tables. We sat in the background for dinner and breakfast on both days. On the first night, I ordered off the specials board; to start I had the Bacon and Spring Onion Quiche which was lovely and for mains the venison casserole. My wife ordered the hummus bruschetta and steak and ale pie. On the second night, we just got main, both of us ordered off the specials board again, my wife got the sun-blushed tomato and brie past and I got a fantastic chicken rogan josh curry, served with a homemade popadom, naan and mango chutney, can't fault it. We really, really enjoyed the food."
