"We had our engagement dinner at this restaurant two years ago, and decided to return for our 1st anniversary. The first time we dined here, the ambience was beautiful with many locals enjoying drinks at the pub, and the food was exceptional. The staff were all very friendly, creating a special atmosphere. However, on our recent visit, it seemed like a completely different place. We had a reservation for 6 o'clock and were the only ones dining, except for one other family. Although the menu sounded promising, we were disappointed with our burgers and veggie chili. The burger patty was small and unimpressive, served in a plain bun like you would find at a fast food truck. The fries appeared to be frozen, rather than freshly cut and fried as they were before. The portion sizes were also quite small, and we decided to skip dessert as the only option was Eton Mess. We paid £31 for our meal, including a bottle of water, which seemed quite expensive for the quality of food we received. The woman behind the bar was friendly, but it was evident that there had been many changes. It was mentioned that a new menu would be introduced the next day, and the chef had just started that week. Overall, we were disappointed with our experience, which put a slight damper on our otherwise lovely anniversary celebration. I doubt we will return to this restaurant unless we can be assured of the same high standard of food and atmosphere we experienced before."

Really delicious food and great atmosphere. Staff were really attentive and friendly. Faultless and well worth the drive

There was confusion over whether we should order at the bar or at the table. The menu was not clear and we had to seek an explanation. The main fish choice was not available and it took an unacceptably long time for the food to arrive. The fish cakes were over done.

There was confusion over where to place our order, whether at the bar or at the table. The menu was unclear and we had to search for an explanation. The main fish option was unavailable and there was an unacceptably long wait for our food to arrive. The fish cakes were sold out.

Sunday lunch with the family was a great success. We had a table with plenty of room about it to fit in the high chair comfortably. The service was good and the food excellent. Well above average pub grub. Delicious. My fishcakes were delicate and very tasty and came in quantity. We'll be visiting again. View menu

We had a successful Sunday dinner with the family. We had a spacious table that fit comfortably with the high chair. The service was good and the food was excellent. The pub food was well above average. My fish cakes were tender and delicious, and came in a generous portion. We are definitely planning to visit again.

Having eaten here two years ago for our engagement meal we returned for our 1 year wedding anniversary. Two years ago there was a lovely ambience, lots of locals drinking in the pub and the food was extra special. All the staff were super friendly and it had a really special feel. Unfortunately on returning this year it was like a different place. We had booked for 6pm and were the only people eating at that time with only one other family around. The menu sounded good but when our burger and veggie chilli arrived we were disappointed. The burger patty was very small and served in a bun, the type you might get at a burger van and the fries were clearly frozen ones not fresh cut and fried as...

"This wasn’t our first visit (the previous occasion was more positive than this) but this was really quite poor. Problem after problem, service was poor and just not very welcoming. Firstly, drinks weren’t available issues with draft, but then bottles weren’t available either. So there was a very limited selection of drinks on offer and the staff weren’t proactive in advising what was available. So it was request and receive a no! Secondly, the food was poor. The starters were shocking. Really quite bad. There was a bit of redemption from some of the mains, but we elected to not proceed with anything else as it wasn’t great. We had to wait ages for drinks and foods to arrive despite the fact that the restaurant was practically empty and many staff present. Frequently there were 3 staff at the back of the room standing about chatting, but they weren’t attentive to our needs. They didn’t check around the room to see if guests required additional drinks or require plates clearing. They didn’t check to see how the food was and when we complained regarding a starter they simply didn’t know how to handle it. When the draft beer came back on there was no proactive behaviour in returning to the table and letting us know so that more drinks could be ordered. Drinks were poured in wrong glasses, plates were cleared whilst people were still eating and then not cleared when they needed to be! Simply put the staff working had no idea on what table service should be perhaps they had received no training which is a major failing when the restaurant is part of a hotel. It was not welcoming. The restaurant was freezing cold. The service was really very poor and the food disappointing. They also don’t take dogs which in Aldeburgh is a bit weird. There is plenty of space and the tables are large so they would not be in the way. We won’t be returning."
