"Well Im not going to lie, we ate here because it was the only place in Pickering where we could get something to eat on a Wednesday at 5 pm. Seriously, Pickering is a DIRE place to be at 5 pm. Everything seems to close at 4 pm (alright for some), pubs mostly unfriendly certainly no food before 6 pm, and if you’re there Monday Wednesday, forget it. Now, that said, this Fish and Chip shop was a real find. Lovely staff, amazing food, and a varied kids menu. They do serve other things besides fish! The ultimate test my picky grandson ate all of his chicken nuggets and garlic bread (and no, we hadn’t starved him or bribed him to do so). Ambiance a bit lacking as its very brightly lit and every time the front door opens a breeze from the Baltic flows in. However, service was excellent. Made a great place to eat prior to our evening ride on the Steam Train."

This fish and chips dish was delicious with perfectly cooked, crispy batter and accompanied by friendly service. What more could you ask for?

Visited here on 30th. September 2023 and I can truthfully say I had the best fish and chips ever, the staff were first class too, a very well run business, will always recommend.

Amazing food, price and service. Hubby had the small fish special which was more than enough I had the fish bites which were amazing. Good big pot of tea. Certainly the best chippie for miles. Can't wait to go back. View menu

We have a takeaway whilst staying in Pickering. The fish and chips were lovely and the batter on the fish was still crispy after the walk back. The staff were very friendly and helpful. You can also eat in option with plenty of table.

Absolutely brilliant restaurant. Food (haddock chips with mushy peas) was delicious and freshly cooked to order. Staff were great, really friendly and helpful. Excellent choice of drinks and lovely atmosphere. Will definitely be back next time we're in Pickering.

After facing difficulty finding a restaurant in Pickering on a chilly and rainy Monday evening, we stumbled upon Capplemans. What a gem! We were quickly served a cold beer, followed by a generous portion of freshly made fish cakes, chips, and mushy peas. My wife ordered the fish pie, which was also delicious and of high quality. The food at this restaurant is of very good quality, and the gluten-free option was one of the best we have ever had. It is a bustling place, with the door constantly opening and closing, making it a bit drafty on cold nights. Despite this, everyone enjoyed the food. My only complaint would be that the seats could use some cushions. Keep up the good work, guys!

We visited for our first nights meal of our short stay in the area. We found the restaurant on maps and spotted the excellent reviews. The staff were welcoming and the food was great and at a very reasonable price. My husband was particularly impressed with his steak and Ale pie, mash and peas. Whilst I enjoyed gammon, eggs, pineapple and chips. My eldest tucked into fish and chips and my youngest a chicken and bacon burger. Everyones meals looked great. Topped off with icecream for dessert. Thank you Capplemans for a great first night in Yorkshire, thoroughly recommend!

"5* simply because I can’t leave 10! Dropped in here in desperation today Easter Saturday) after travelling around to a couple of places and not being able to get a table. Thought we were off to the Chinese in Pickering when we stopped her and asked if dogs were allowed in? Yes we were told and then did they have a table for 2? Despite being full and tables reserved they found us one, we had to wait a bit to have our order taken but they did get us drinks straight away while we waited for them to deal with the party of 8 that came in just before us. When they did take out order I went for the sirloin steak and my wife the lasagna. This was finished with apple crumble custard and hot choc fudge cake custard. We can honestly say it all was cooked to perfection. The steak I haven’t had so good in a long time even when I’ve cooked it) and the wife’s lasagna was spot on too. Puddings tasted perfect too. Lovely, small, but reasonable quite pub considering it was full. Staff were outstanding, friendly, helpful and polite apologising for our wait which considering we dropped in on the off chance was our fault not theirs. The landlord was great. Joking and making us feel at home and actually wanted. As others have said, every pub needs a landlord like this. Our only regret was it was our last night that we popped in even though over the years we’ve driven past it so many times. If you want a well cooked meal at a nice quiet county pub with good service and polite staff you don’t need to look any further. We will definitely be back here when in the area. Thank you so much to all the staff."
