"We visited The Chum in October for the first time in a long time (previous visits had been disappointing). It all started so well, nice atmosphere, lots of families in but it wasn 't packed. Hubby had fish and chips and I had the smoked haddock with cheese topping and a portion of chips. Food was really very nice I would have still been hungry if I hadn 't ordered the chips though. Our one issue was that part way through our meal we wanted to order some more drinks. Asked the waitress and were told we had to order at the bar. What???? Who wants to get up part way through a meal to order drinks for goodness sake? It wasn 't over busy the night we went but how on earth would this system work when it is busy with queues at the bar to order drinks and/or to order food? Can you imagine a group of people on a busy night mid way through their meals being expected to go to the bar to get more drinks. Absolutely ridiculous. So we didn 't get more drinks, we didn 't order the pudding that we had intended on having, we came home and opened a bottle of wine instead. We didn 't leave a service tip as other than the food being delivered to our table there wasn 't any other 'service '. Was this a 'one off ' or is the norm now? If so, we won 't be coming back I 'm afraid and in theory this is our local pub that we should be visiting regularly. Very disappointed."

Nice setting and the pub is very charming, however the food was just average. Sorry to say that all four of us ended up with bad stomachs as well. Won’t be back.

A nice location for a highly recommended pub on most websites. They do not lie. A good but not extensive selection of cask ales (quality over quantity prevails) and an excellent selection of pub grub. The steak and kidney pie cannot be described without the use of superlatives. If you are still hungry the jam roly poly absolutely sticks to your ribs. Location: 5

Met up with our family , a party of 10 , for Sunday lunch . The high ceilinged school house was interesting but noisy . We pre ordered our main courses at the request of the restaurant , but the ordering of drinks at the bar certainly ‘ interrupted’ the flow of the reunion many other clients were also ordering their food at the bar and getting top up drinks for our party took a while . The roast beef meals were good , but the three lamb meals were uninspiring . I would suggest more than half a carrot per plate , and hotter food , BUT the main gripe is that it took almost an hour from our allotted sit down time of 1.30 , to receiving our meals . The overall experience was passable , but not m... View menu

First time at this restaurant and whilst we had a lovely evening overall, experience very mixed. You can’t book and when we called to try and book we were told to just turn up and we’ll fit you in. We did this on Saturday around 7.15 and it was pretty busy with no tables available. We expected this so got a drink and were given a table fairly quickly. This is where it went a bit wrong as no menus were brought over until we asked after about 20 minutes and then no one told us you had to order at the bar. Several things weren’t available when we did order and it all just felt very chaotic. When the food we ordered came, it was generally good but side dishes were missed and there was nobody to...

It is annoying that Google will only allow accommodation review. Most people go to eat! Overall, the food was good. You can't reserve a table, but there was plenty of room for lunch. You choose your table and order at the bar. Service was polite and quick. We had Prawns in Garlic to start, very nice but not quite Gambas Pil Pil, followed by Filo lentil pie, which was wholesome and delicious with a lovely mushroom sauce. We shared a jam rolly poly with fresh fruit and vanilla custard. All perfectly home cooked. A couple of issues with the actual pub. It felt old and tatty. The front door is rotting, and the half dead plants are not very welcoming. There are cobwebs over the ceiling, and the t...

"Visited, based on recommendation from one of its sister pubs (The Bears Paw). Looks very nice from approach and inside and very comfortable seats offered. Menu looked very nice and proved difficult to decide. Starters: I went for the Ox Cheek, which I 've had elewhere and usually proves delicious. Unfortunately, although it turned up promptly and looking nicely presented, it proved to be 75% jelatanous fat, which, of course, is very disappointing given the price of starters alone (photo attached). I know 'fats ' can add to the taste, but this was not what was expected given previous servings. My wife didn 't opt for a starter, but we shared a goats cheese flatbread (also as shown). This was very nice and by no means disappointing. Mains: I went for the 'A la Plancha ' Bacon Joint with marmalade glaze and fried egg. Again, it looked nicely presented and tasted very nice indeed. Just (again) disappointed, by the overly thick layer of jelatanous fat. This could have potentially been made into a cracking, but ended up being an inch thick slab of leftovers. Otherwise, the meal was lovely. The dear wife went for the 'Peruvian marinated Chicken Burger ', served with hand cut fries and a delicious, if not perplexing, green sauce mayonnaise. (I just wish I ordered what she did). Dessert: I went for the ye olde traditional Banoffe Knickerbocker Glory, and the wife had the Elderflower Creme Brulee. Both were very nice and washed down with pleasing drinks. Bill was, as expected, very expensive. Moreso given the disappointing starter and main for myself. A 'discrete ' 7.5% tip is automatically added, so be aware. Yes, the service was great, but if I visit again, I 'll definitely reconsider the options. Aimed a bit more towards the 'la dee daa ' side of Cheshire "
