"4 of us went for lunch at 1pm today. It was fairly busy but not full. My husband and I had been 2 weeks previously with friends and had a long wait, we just assumed that was a “one off”, the food was good when it arrived, so we chose to visit again. It clearly wasn’t a one off. Today we waited for over an hour. We had to ask how much longer we would have to wait, no one came to us to apologise or explain until we queried it. Then we were told the food would be out in a few minutes. Then we were advised another table was to be served and then us. We were told it was because they had been busy! The food finally arrived. 2 of us had venison casserole with mash and seasonal greens. We were so hungry by this time I thought I would be happy to eat anything. The food had either been sitting around for a while (like us) or had been reheated, just not enough. The venison dish was cold in the middle , the mash was just warm. We just couldn’t eat it. Also it wasn’t a casserole, it was just a mass of overcooked meat, and a strange texture. My brother had fish cakes which he said were nice but it was served with a green salad that had been drowned in dressing and it all looked a bit sad. He ate it saying he was just glad he hadn’t ordered the venison! My husband had the steak sandwich which he thought was ok. We would normally have ordered puddings but by this time we were so disappointed with the whole experience that we didn’t want to stay any longer. When we went to pay, and expressed our disappointment, the staff member apologised and knocked money off the bill. What we really wanted was a lovely meal and an enjoyable visit. We won’t be back anytime soon I’m afraid."

Nice setting and the pub is very charming, however the food was just average. Sorry to say that all four of us ended up with bad stomachs as well. Won’t be back.

We were not impressed with our visit here. Unfortunately the food was very bland and the service was also not great. I would say it is quite overpriced for what you get. The interiors are lovely if you are going for a drink but will probably not be returning for food.

It was a great disappointment today for #SUNDAYROAST lunch. Sirloin(? of beef reminded me of grey school dinners. The roast potatoes were over cooked, and an unrecognisable slush of vegetables, plus half a roast carrot, all swimming in Luke-warm gravy. Two anaemic cappuccino coffees eventually arrived, followed by two Americanos five minutes later. Never again. There are far better places for Sunday lunch locally. A great pity as it used to be good.

5/5 This Victorian school has been sympathetically converted into a very comfortable pub/restaurant. The open fire was very welcoming on a cold day and the staff couldn’t have been more friendly and helpful. This is the place to be if you like gin! The menu included the usual standards as well as an interesting range of game dishes and a nod towards Burns Night. My bedroom in the charming Headmaster’s House, was small but cosy and very quiet. No television which didn’t bother me but might be an issue for some.

Met up with our family , a party of 10 , for Sunday lunch . The high ceilinged school house was interesting but noisy . We pre ordered our main courses at the request of the restaurant , but the ordering of drinks at the bar certainly ‘ interrupted’ the flow of the reunion many other clients were also ordering their food at the bar and getting top up drinks for our party took a while . The roast beef meals were good , but the three lamb meals were uninspiring . I would suggest more than half a carrot per plate , and hotter food , BUT the main gripe is that it took almost an hour from our allotted sit down time of 1.30 , to receiving our meals . The overall experience was passable , but not m...

First time at this restaurant and whilst we had a lovely evening overall, experience very mixed. You can’t book and when we called to try and book we were told to just turn up and we’ll fit you in. We did this on Saturday around 7.15 and it was pretty busy with no tables available. We expected this so got a drink and were given a table fairly quickly. This is where it went a bit wrong as no menus were brought over until we asked after about 20 minutes and then no one told us you had to order at the bar. Several things weren’t available when we did order and it all just felt very chaotic. When the food we ordered came, it was generally good but side dishes were missed and there was nobody to...

We booked a Saturday night package which included a gin tasting, a two course dinner, an overnight night stay and breakfast in the Sunday morning. We thoroughly enjoyed the entire experience. The pub is an old schoolhouse and the accommodation is situated in the adjacent old Headmaster's house. We received a warm welcome in the pub and were escorted across to our room. There are only six of these. Each is named after a fictional head teacher. Our room was Miss Fritton of St Trinian's fame/notoriety. The rooms are superbly appointed and, blissfully, do not include a television. The gin tasting was enjoyable and informative. We then moved to sit in front of the open fire and eventually enjoyed...

We decided to try it for lunch after reading of their awards. We were a party of 4 and the first thing to say is that they only take advance bookings for groups, we were travelling up from Cambridge on the morning of 1 December so it was a bit worrying that we might not get a table. Fortunately there was availability and it was moderately busy. You have to order your food at the bar which we duly did, one starter and three main courses. Our main gripe was the length of time it took to serve the food, I had to get up and go to the bar twice to ask them to check and it was over an hour and a half before we got served. A minor complaint would be the room temperature, it was a very cold day outs...

We visited The Chum in October for the first time in a long time (previous visits had been disappointing). It all started so well, nice atmosphere, lots of families in but it wasn 't packed. Hubby had fish and chips and I had the smoked haddock with cheese topping and a portion of chips. Food was really very nice I would have still been hungry if I hadn 't ordered the chips though. Our one issue was that part way through our meal we wanted to order some more drinks. Asked the waitress and were told we had to order at the bar. What???? Who wants to get up part way through a meal to order drinks for goodness sake? It wasn 't over busy the night we went but how on earth would this system work w...
