"update april 2022 since my first review already often. Her hearty Vietnamese dishes are great, I had some of the tofus. they also enjoy more puddings, including various fruit crumbs/bakers, the Empire Biscuit, and today an amazing skyberry and coconut tea on a short bread basis, with vegan ice. yum. original review first time in pumpernickel, as I heard it had gone completely vegetarian and vegan. they have kept their usual menu, but all the options are vegetarian/vegan (zb veggie ham, bacon' etc.) one of the owners is vietnamesian and so we have tried these hot rolls, and two different tofuss all fabulous! they came with roasted rice and salate and dipping sauce. it was obviously busy, we went around 2 o'clock and only a few tables were left, but then it was still. the board had the specials on, all sound great and are good. only two suggestions label, the dishes are vegan or vegan (i.e. some of the noodles are not suitable), and maybe have a few vegan cakes. (they had a big cake ad, but currently not vegan we are going back. the update was returned at the beginning of October 2021. tried the crepes (nice! hearty minze' and bohnenprouts inside) and friend had the Thai veg burger, also good. Apple crumbcake. friend had taken along before and had vegan skyberry cake. was busy fri 12-2, but other days in the week are quieter. updated by previous review on 2022-04-30"

We were warmly greeted at the door and told what vegan options were available, there were so many. In the end we had the dumplings and spring rolls, they were both so delicious. Even though we were quite full we still ordered a slice of apple crumble pie, it was so good! I would highly recommend Pumpernickel to any vegan coming to Dumfries.

This was my first time visiting Dumfries, and I will definitely come back, just for this cafe! As a vegan, I had done my research before visiting and found that Pumpernickel was the only vegetarian/vegan place to eat. I was pleased to see that there were plenty of options on the menu for both vegans and vegetarians. I tried one of the Thai-inspired tofu dishes with tamarind, and it was delicious and filling, as well as great value for money. I left feeling satisfied and not hungry at all. My friend, who is not vegan, also enjoyed her meal choice. I would give this place a 10/10. Thank you! View menu

Although we live in Dumfries this was our first visit to Pumpernickel coffee shop. We recently found out that it had gone fully vegetarian/vegan which is what prompted us to go. We had the same dishes as the previous two reviewers. which were delicious. They did have home made vegan biscuits which we didn't try and it sounds like they might have vegan cakes in the future which would be great. It has the usual cafe type menu with breakfasts, soup, sandwiches, toasties, baguettes, baked potatoes etc. as well as Vietnamese and Thai inspired dishes. We will definitely be back to try out more things on the menu.

Pumpernickel serve extraordinary beautifully cooked Vietnamese vegan and vegetarian food. The cafe stands out for how good its cook is the tofu and rice are prepared to perfection. I have become a regular and love the fried tofu which is served in several different flavours including lemongrass, tamarind and hot chilli. However if you visit when just passing through I'd recommend the crepes. Vietnamese cuisine has a distinct French influence and there are some very nice dishes which show that heritage (Or you could just visit twice and try a couple of different meals Friendly staff, spotlessly clean, quick turnaround and very reasonable prices. Not to be missed!

I recently discovered Pumpernickel and I am very impressed by the wide variety of food options, exceptional service, and friendly atmosphere created by both the staff and customers. Upon my arrival, James, the owner, always serves me my perfect coffee and warm fresh cheese without even having to ask. The level of service makes me feel like royalty. James and his wife work extremely hard to provide fresh, natural ingredients and delicious meals. I particularly enjoyed the Asian dishes and the fantastic house-baked goods. I have noticed that the staff is always willing to explain the menu items to customers who inquire. Dumfries is fortunate to have such a wonderful café right at its doorstep. View menu

Such an unexpected treat to find a fully veggie-vegan cafe in Dumfries! We were only looking for a decent coffee place, but once we saw the all veggie/vegan words on the menu we stayed for lunch. Could have stayed all day TBH ! A big menu of snacks, sandwiches, toasties etc, all using vegan meat substitutes, but for us the daily chalkboard menu was the big hit about 10 different specials, with lots of Vietnamese (chef is Vietnamese heritage) tofu dishes, vegan lasagne etc. We had the fried tofu in tamarind sauce with noodles, and a thick, intense, root veg curry. Both amazing with large portions for a really decent price 6.95 each). Friendly, welcoming owner who told me that the move to ful...

However, I can only give this restaurant three stars because I found the menu system to be confusing. Each table had a printed, laminated menu that seemed outdated, with typical cafe options like sandwiches and baked potatoes. There were no clear markings for vegan options, although there was a sign outside advertising them. When I asked about vegan dishes, I was directed to a list on the wall that only showed ingredients used (e.g. tofu), leaving me unsure of what I could actually order. There were photos on the wall of dishes like noodles that looked like they could be vegan, but there were no specific labels. None of these options were listed on the table menu, and there were no prices d...

"I’m not quite sure where to start with this as I’ve never experienced such poor service in a restaurant before but I’ll try. So we were a party of 10 celebrating my mother in law’s 60th. My partner isn’t from Dumfries and Galloway so just told me he’d looked this place up and decided to book it. I hadn’t really heard of it and had initially wanted to go to the Bank but after looking at reviews of Truffles and seeing people speak highly of the food I thought let’s give it a try. I noticed many speaking about how awful the owner was but I thought surely he can’t be that bad if people are still going and people are still leaving good reviews. How wrong I was! Another warning sign I should have noticed was that we initially booked in for the Friday but changed to the Saturday and they were able to accommodate that easily last minute so clearly aren’t busy. We were running 15mins late. I called to let them know and apologise. The waitress who answered the phone was accepting of this and said it was ok. On arriving the owner ‘greeted’ us. I again apologised and he shrugged his shoulders but let us in. We all sat down and he immediately came to ask us if we wanted drinks. We were looking at the drinks menu and discussing what we wanted when he repeated in a slow and aggressive tone DO.YOU.WANT.ANY.DRINKS??! It was extremely awkward. My dad asked about red wine and he used his notepad to lean over my dad and aggressively hit the menu and point to a wine on the list. We ordered drinks which included 2 pints of beer. As he walked away we all felt very uncomfortable and decided we did not want to spend our money in such a venue when the atmosphere was cold and aggressive. We all decided to leave. My partner spoke to the owner letting him know his front of house manner was appalling and that we’d be leaving. He said he didn’t “understand people” and that he expected us to pay for the pints that had been poured. I gave him a £20 note and he aggressively gave it back to me, stating he had no money in the till to give me change and swiftly snatched the pints back and put them behind the bar. We then left and were politely accommodated in the Bank next door (which I would highly recommend). As we left, the waitress apologised on our way out. I actually felt bad leaving her in such a cold and horrible environment. That owner should not be front of house. He is rude. He is right, he doesn’t understand people and has no people skills whatsoever. I would avoid this place like the plague and go next door to the Bank! (The one star is for the waitress who we had to leave behind)"
