"Booked a table for 12:15. Arrived and the place looked shut, both doors shut and front door locked. The chairs were still on the tables from the night before. Greeted (if you can call it that) by a rather unwelcoming member of staff, who looked like she’d rather be anywhere else and then proceeded to complete doing her make up in the back of the bar rather than giving us menus. The tables were filthy, the floors had not been swept from the night before and the couches covered in dog hair. It had a smell in the air of wet dog and chip fat and the bar area was dark, and uninviting. The whole time we were there they didn’t put any music on in the background which meant we could hear the cross words had between the staff (awkward to say the least). The waitress did warm up as time went on and was a little more friendly to the few diners that arrived after us. Considering we booked a table for the restaurant area that’s where we should have been seated. Food was average and not worth the price, as there was no music we could hear the microwave for the lasagne. I don’t normally write reviews however I feel the need as hopefully the establishment will reflect and improve for others, especially when the website etc make it look so appealing. People parting with their hard earned money during these times deserve better."

Stunning wee pub, lovely owner and staff. Kids spilt drinks and they couldn't have been more accommodating. Highly recommended.

A great little pub just 5 minutes from Alton Towers. The food was delicious and the service was top notch, would highly recommend this pub to anyone visiting the area.

Don't bother eating at any of the Alton Tower hotels. Drive 5 minutes away and go to this place. The food was awesome and cost less than Flambo Jambo junk. Get the steak and chicken kebab... It's brilliant View menu

We are staying at the Alton towers splash landing hotel and decided to venture out for dinner, what a pub we found …. The most accommodating staff , amazing food and great prices, we had a lovely evening with friends, Many thanks. And they even recommended a Mini bus driver to take us back, who came and bought us back , even though he had finished for the day big thanks Wooly ! Fab evening … thanks to all

Dropped in here as a break from a 3 day stay at Alton Towers. We were greeted and served by Reese who was welcoming, cordial and professional. We had tried to book the previous evening but couldn't get a table due to Alton Towers clientele, so be warned book early to avoid disappointment, especially peak season. The food was top notch, generous servings and well made. Would happily revisit. Only real negative was parking was a bit restricted. View menu

Upon visiting the area we done a quick TA search to see where the best place to go for dinner was and this places seemed to tick all the boxes. On arriving the street is very narrow with limited on street parking but there is some parking and an entrance round the back. although we didn’t book (which is advisable) the staff couldn’t be more accommodating and managed to get us seated at the bar area. The food was great and a take away box was even provided when my kids couldn’t finish their meals. Would highly recommend popping in if you’re in the area.

We visited this hotel on a trip to alton towers. It’s only a few minutes drive from there. We drove past it without noticing it at first but so glad we found it. The character of the place is fab. Really well decorated, I’m told there is a function room which I bet looks amazing is the rest of the place is anything to go by. The staff were really friendly, welcoming and attentive. We weren’t waiting long at all to order or for our food which is always a blessing with 2 little ones in tow. The food was amazing and compared to the prices we’d seen on line for the Alton towers hotel meals was very well priced. If we were in the area again we would definitely return and recommend!

"Our room faced the front of the hotel, and while the village was quiet with only two pubs and a small corner store, it seemed to be a shortcut for heavy vehicles speeding downhill at night, with headlights constantly illuminating our room. We also found out that the hotel closes in the evening if it's not busy, and the front door may be locked as early as 10 PM, requiring a code for re-entry. The internet service was poor; even standing just outside the front door, I had no reception and couldn't call the emergency numbers posted there. It appears that the quality of the rooms varies significantly, with some having been upgraded while others are less desirable, including our own. When we questioned our bill because we didn't think the room was worth £140, we were told that since we had booked through Charming Escapes, we should take it up with them, as the hotel receives only a fraction of what we paid. This made us feel like second-class guests, especially since it seemed we were stuck in a low-quality room. The standard rate for a double room is £90, and if I were to rate our experience like on the TV show "Four in a Bed," I would say £50 a night would have been generous. Previous reviews also mentioned an issue with the door handle and the ability to lock the room, which had not been fixed. If you’re just looking for a place to dry off your hiking boots, this hotel might suffice, but I wouldn't recommend staying here again. It has a lot of potential, and thankfully, we had a wonderful evening at The Devonshire Arms just across the street—it felt like a whole different experience. It seems the staff at Charles Cotton have simply given up."
