"Ok so always start with a positive.....the room was huge and very quaint. Decent size double bed and single bed, sink in room and had ensuite toilet. Shower big enough for our 3 year old granddaughter only. Well what can I say apart from that....it was awful! Don't eat in the restaurant.....mix of everything but nothing good, staff had no idea what they were doing! So as had breakfast included thought yep can't get that wrong....I've had better service in a roadside cafe! Yep and it felt like a greasy spoon, out of 8 fried eggs only 2 were decent rest poor. Don't mind helping myself to buffet but not even salt or pepper on tablets everything in packets... Staff too busy singing to serve guests be ok but they couldn't hold a tune! So for £139 find yourself somewhere else"

Decent service and very good food, tired pub decor and furniture let it down a bit.

Popped in after doing a walk to the Abbey and back along the river. The food menu is different offering tradition pub grub along with Indian and Chinese dishes. We sat in the lovely beer garden, I had a naan wrap and my wife a fried rice dish and both were excellent. The staff were very friendly and welcoming. Great place!

I cannot fault this place. The room was huge, the bathroom was massive, the bed was enormous! The owners have successfully combined their own culture with that of the Dales and created something unique and very special. My fiancé has mobility issues (but can do stairs) and nothing was too much trouble. We both had a lovely stay and will definitely be back.

We called in today as we had read reviews and wanted something different to normal pub grub. What can I say, excellent service , friendly people and fantastic food. I had a keema Naanza and my partner Scott had the seafood platter. Our dog loved both the conservatory and the lovely beer garden. We were made to feel very welcome. Would definitely recommend to anyone visiting Barnard Castle.

This is tough as the staff and customer service were great but the food was dire. This is our 3rd bad experience here. Once told off for raping instead of just being asked to go outside, once for autistic grandson being told off for bad behaviour and now, far more recently vile food. Curry was inedible. I'm not a fussy eater but this was gross. Fish chips were fine, standard. But in fairness I got offer of another dish but went for full refund. Staff were polite and handled situation perfectly but honestly I've never seen or tasted such a revolting curry. Three strikes and I'm out. Won't be going back again. Sorry old well. Lovely beer garden though!!

"started really well and went to the counter and ordered a cream with bananas and nutella and especially gave no earthberries I also asked after a san pelegríno still water as this was on the menu. I was the first person to order and the last to eat at the end. I brought my water over which was a cheaper brand water I just had £2 for what I would like to have seen? we will, when asked for san pelligrino to say water that they do not in. Finally my crepe and I take a bite and understand that it is earthly on the whole species and wise by which I am allergic. one of my family members takes it back and says that I have asked for bananas, there is no earthly reason why I cannot eat it and did not want it on my crepe. then 5 minutes later another crêpe comes out, who was my bite crêpe, that someone had put the earthy and banan in the bananas. disgusting ... not sure whether this was a mistake or just stingy either as it did not. it is then returned because there is no way I eat, and it is explained again, there is a reason that I can not eat strawberries, to which then one of the owners passes to serve the right crepe and apology. I really hope that today a lection has been learned because cross-contamination is not a sweat. please be careful when they eat there. I didn't get any refunds offered, but then they were ready to serve me a bite crawl, so it didn't surprise me so much."
