"What a great pub experience (we visited in Nov. 2023). This was the 2nd time visiting and eating at this pub. It is perfectly located for climbing Blencathra otherwise it can be considered a bit in the middle of nowhere. However, it is certainly worth a trip to as the food is gorgeous (being vegan, I'm referring to the vegan options here, but everyone looked very happy with their meals) and ales really good and change over time. The staff are super friendly, polite very efficient. We were in a camper van for the weekend and wanted to hike Blencathra for sunrise, so the pub was ideally placed for this. And, brilliantly, if you eat drink in the pub, you can use their car park to overnight for free. I would suggest booking a table in advance as it gets very busy; our table was next to a real fire, which was great with minus temperatures outside. The pub is very dog friendly, so feel free to take your 4 legged friends in the pub. The pub also offers accommodation (called the bunkhouse), which appears to get booked up, so again book in advance. Overall, with excellent food, friendly staff, a really lovely atmosphere and good beer, we had a brilliant experience here and would highly recommend it. It also makes a great place to head for if you are after a Sunday roast as this is offered every Sunday. Vegetarian options: Vegan options are available and gorgeous. Parking: It is not a big car park, you may have to park on the road. But if you eat/drink here you can stay overnight for free, which is great if you have a van."

On the other hand, the pub offers decent food, but securing a table can be tricky due to a lot of reserved signs—even when the tables are empty. The taller, greying-haired man at the bar comes across as quite surly and rude. Additionally, they didn't have everything listed on the menu. Prices for food and drinks are on the steep side. It seems like they’re always busy, which may lead to a lack of care for customer service. View menu

What a superb place with above and beyond customer service. We called in after walking on Saturday and they were extremely accommodating finding us a table to have an evening meal. Food was delicious. I had cider battered haddock and my partner opted for a starter of king prawn and a side salad, it was huge portion and more than enough to make a main . Thoroughly enjoyed the evening. Staff were very attentive without being over bearing, can't recommend them enough. If you are in the area, or even just passing and need a rest stop, you won't be disappointed.

Bunkhouse and pub review The staff were Miserable and unhelpful, quite rude and had attitudes, none of them looked like they wanted to be there. Most/all the tables had reserved tabs on for no apparent reason, there were 2 empty tables when we Got there at 6.30 and were told they couldn't serve us for food until 8.15 but both tables stayed empty the entire time, food was ok but overpriced then when the food came no one seemed to know which was gluten free and which was vegetarian, a total shambles, the bunkhouse is a fantastic facility at a great price, good kitchen and while small good clean rooms, hot water at night but no hot water in the morning on both days

"This review is strictly about the stay above the Inn only. Unfortunately we have not had a great stay and would not recommend booking here either. We’ve stayed from Tuesday to Wednesday and been informed ahead about the Inn being shut on these days so self check in is required which wasn’t a problem. Check in time is at 4pm but you’re advised to fill in your “breakfast forms” and drop them in before 9pm which retains you to a 5hr check in window which is worth keeping in mind if you’re getting there late. Picking up the keys and locating the Inn overall was easy. However, we were met with a stone cold room with no heating. After spending 10mins there our fingers were so cold it was hard to press buttons on the phone! Even though we’ve switched on the electric heater as soon as we got there, the room wasn’t an acceptable temperature probably until it was the time to check out. This was really shocking considering the area was experiencing temperatures as low as -7 at night when we’ve stayed! Speaking of the room, although the hallways are nicely done up, the room needs attention. The corner of the bathroom had mould all over it. Dust was everywhere, cobwebs on the windows and corners of the ceiling. Cracks in the walls. Electric socket was broken behind the wall to the point where the insides of it were exposed (see photos). Breakfast was lovely and the landlady did seem very polite which is the only thing that brings me to rate this more than one star. Dining room was cold and the ceiling was holding a big “balloon” of water from an apparent leak above. Rooms: 1 Service: 2 Location: 4"
