"While we visited the holiday, we were looking specifically for such a diner and visited purely on the basis of reviews. We were not disappointed and can see why it is packed here in high season. We booked, but there were only a few people in there, of which I was not surprised as it was on September night at 5:00, just outside the high season. I noticed that the staff was busy cleaning the restaurant-skirting boards and walls, which I always appreciate. Our server was so friendly and helpful when we delete objects on the menu. Both had to start nachos, large part. Had a little more salsa wished, because the pot was quite small for the large part. We had both steak, including HUGE. My partner had the garlic puwns with his and I was very impressed with how big they were and how nicely cooked they were. I liked the fact that you could order extras on the site that were not a full part, a half part, for half the price. I love having a selection of pages, but do not want a full size or pay full price. That was a nice note. Steak was perfectly cooked! I think it was a little expensive, but you get what you pay, we knew it would be expensive when we saw the menu before we booked. But I must say it was absolutely worth it! While I was there, they were clean and tidy. We said when we visit again, we will eat there again!"

2nd visit in week, lovely staff, good menu, generous portions, nice atmosphere and busy, but with quick service. Will be back for 3rd visit before we leave. Our empty plates say it all

Visited smoker Joe is over the weekend and were really impressed by the quality of foods especially how perfectly cooked the steaks were! The staff was friendly and friendly and nothing was too worried. Thank you.

With so many restaurants it's a difficult decision. We smashed it with Smokey Joe's. Went for the 16oz rump. Was cooked to perfection, with a glaze that complemented the steak rather than over powering it. Recommended highly!

First time at Smokey Joe's, safe to say it was beautiful. My partner and I both had the 16ounce rump steak, and it was amazing. It was beautifully cooked and seasoned. If I didn't know it was a rump, I would of said a sirloin at least. Atmosphere was nice and the owners are lovely people. Definitely recommend.

Best burger I have had in such a long time. I was waited on by a lovely, considerate and friendly member of staff called Jena. Ingredients were fresh and well selected; cooked to a great standard. It is really nicely decorated, they have done a great job with the restaurant. It was also serving food till 2200, which was a great plus. Definitely my new favourite local burger place.

Brilliant staff, very efficient service. Although the food itself was very good we did think the steaks were slightly over priced. Once you removed a very, very small 'garnish ' in a tiny dish, the chips and steak looked quite lost on the plate. I would go again but I think I would rather have a couple of starters instead of a main meal. The garlic king prawns were absolutely delicious.

We are buying a place in Torquay so decided to look at some of the local independent food venues. This one came up and we thought 'why not? ' So booked online. They got back to us as soon as they opened that day (a Saturday and confirmed our table and we had an amazing meal. Venue is pretty good too but the service was excellent and our waitress (can 't remember her name as she kept us topped up with drinks ! and the team looked after us very well. Definitely worth a visit, even all the way from Essex! Thanks for a great evening guys!

"From the off, everything was bang on point. The warmth of the welcome, being taken straight to our table and offered water and an aperitif promptly. We, a party of three, opted for the set lunch, which offers very good value for money. £29.50 for two courses, £35 for three, with two options for each course. Two of us opted for the baked Roscoff onion with pearl barley. Simple ingredients but beautifully cooked with a truly sublime brown onion sauce of such intensity, it lifted an already lovely plate of food to another level. The other person had the ponzu cured mackerel which she pronounced lovely but she had serious food envy over the onion dish. The main courses were grilled hake, which again was sauced to perfection and a grilled bavette with a vegetable medley and a pea? puree and a meat jus. We added a small dish of dauphinois at £5 which complimented everything very well. We drank a good and reasonably priced Rioja Blanco. No room for dessert sadly. This restaurant is not cheap but there is a difference between cost and value and The Elephant offers very good value with the set lunch; it allows you to sample really very good cooking at a price that will not break the bank. The normal a la carte menu is around double the price but on looking at what this offered, I would say that it again offers good value for money, being a step up in choice with more expensive ingredients. This is a serious restaurant. Go there. You will not be disappointed."
